2017 has sure been a year of surprises!
While all kinds of Bollywood movies have
released this year, it's south cinema that has
reigned over. Yes, movies down South have
ruled all the way in terms of qualitative
cinema and box office numbers in 2017.
Twitter's report on the most influential
moments of 2017 further reaffirms this fact!
As per the report, Baahubali and Mersal
were the most talked about topics on the
microblogging site this year. While
Baahubali dominated the first part of 2017,
Mersal took over in the latter half. SS
Rajamouli's magnum opus managed to
create a buzz not only prior to its release,
but the buzz around the film further
doubled post release. The film has managed
to create some invincible records at the box
office even. As for Mersal, it managed to
generate a whopping 1.7 million tweets in
three days thus making the film the top
hashtag trend of this year. To top that, the
film was the first one to have its own

of discussions. Turns out one of Suriya's
tweet on his upcoming film Thaana
Serndha Kootam went on to become the
most retweeted tweet of this year, earning
68,808 retweets and 112,984 likes! Clearly,
South is ruling the roost on social media!
Even in terms of Box office figures, both
films have managed to create unbelievable
records Baahubali is the first film to have
entered the Rs 1000 crore club, while Mersal
is the only Tamil film to have earned Rs 100
crore at the Tamil box office alone, and Rs
250 crore at the box office worldwide. Both
films have indeed set high benchmarks.
Baahubali was directed by SS Rajamouli and
starred Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka
Shetty, Tamannaaah bhatia and Sathyaraj.
While Mersal was directed by Atlee and
