Is the action flick worth the popcorn? Reviewer Sneha May Francis gives her take!

Director: Milan Luthria

Starcast: Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashmi, Ileana Dcruz, Esha Gupta

Rating: One Star

"The carat in your gold can't ruin my character," announces a moody man in black, just minutes into the movie, leaving you baffled at how inane that claim is, and almost certain that it's pretty much downhill from there on. And director Milan Luthria keeps that promise.

He collects men with muscles and women with great bodies, and packs them off to the deserts of Rajasthan on the pretext of a thriller. But apart from loading the pack with guns, silly dialogues and twisted personalities, and investing in the celebrated Sunny Leone's raunchy moves along with a ginormous truck, Luthria forgets he needs a story to fit them all in. Instead, he obediently plays to the gallery and glorifies his macho men by parading them in slow-mo shots that are tuned to a blaring background score.

So, while the men get bloodied and indulge in fist fights and chase sequences, the women are made to glare, seduce and pout, and occasionally hold a gun. At 136 minutes, it's an exhaustive exercise in vanity and cheap thrills.

Set during the 1975 Emergency in India, Baadshaho is the story about the blue-blooded Gitajanli who is forced to give away her royal treasures to the government. But she isn't one to give up without a fight. In comes her trusted bodyguard, who along with his two friends and the queen's loyal aide, is tasked to win back her gold.

However, just as they chalk out the perfect plan, a menacing military officer steps in to ruin the fun.

Ajay Devgn sticks to his black uniform and obediently wears a broody expression without giving any depth or character to Bhawani. Even when he claims he lives life king size, you sense he's bluffing. He finds the perfect match in Ileana D'Cruz who dresses Gitanjali in pearls and chiffons but never allows her personality to show. Though there's a scene where she talks about the various layers to her personality, we get to see none of it onscreen. Vidyut Jamal relies heavily on his wavy long hair and killer abs, and nothing else. And there's Esha Gupta, who safely lets her wardrobe do the work. She sticks out like a sore thumb when paired alongside Emraan Hashmi, who despite handed the kohl-smeared thug look, injects fun and madness into Bhawani's rogue pal. From his quirky t-shirts (that announce Free Love' and Night Lover') he's charming when he claims he's the "king of hearts.

But the star of the team is Sanjay Mishra. He's delightful as the crazy Guruji who finds humour in every situation, and who makes this mess of a film a tad tolerable. We only wish he found a movie befitting of his talent.

High on machoism and low on logic or reason,Baadshaho unfortunately remains a BAD SHOW.

Review: Should you see Baadshaho in UAE this Eid Al Adha weekend?
Deepa Gauri

Last updated on August 31, 2017 at 7.25 pm

First things first: Baadshaho, Ajay Devgn's thriller-heist outing, is mercifully not another Shivay. The action is more believable, and the film has a core plot giving room for most characters to stand on their feet.

As a heist movie, Baadshaho works adequately, and lends justice to its original premise, based on the real-life mystery relating to the missing wealth of a royal family that lost its moorings in post-Independent India.

Baadshaho is also true to the milieu of director Milan Luthria. After exploring the seedy underbelly of Mumbai (in Once Upon a Time in Mumbai), hetakes his tested craft to Rajasthan, and plants his favourite actors Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashimi on a chase that is replete with deceit, treachery and double-crossing.

With writer Rajat Arora, the name behind many interesting films (including Luthria's The Dirty Picture), Baadshaho, however, could have been stronger and punchier if only it resisted its urge for unneeded heroism and repetitive punch-line delivery from practically everyone in the cast.

We have Devgan going on about how life is all about four days and today is his fourth, while Hashimi has to chip in the story of his friend, who gets into trouble all the time, and well, dies.

But for its silliness in the dialogue-department, Baadshaho finds its bearings as it gets into heist mode. Things start rather slow as we are introduced to Gitanjali (Ileana D'Cruz), a newly crowned princess, imprisoned for not declaring her hidden wealth - and her wealth is confiscated.

Now, as she tells the police, her saviour will come. That is Bhawani Singh (Devgn) her former bodyguard, who swears his life and word upon her. Assembling a lock-cracker (Sanjay Mishra), a side-kick - tattooed, in cheap T-shirts and a lady's man - Dalia (Hashimi) and a friend of Gitanjali, Sanjana (Esha Gupta), Bhawani sets out to steal the wealth being secretly carted away to a politician Sanjeev (with an actor who has uncanny resemblance to Sanjay Gandhi). The four have to fight an army officer Sheher Singh (Vidyut Jamwal), and what unfolds, including the many sudden twists, make for Baadshaho.

Set in the infamous Emergency period, the film subtly reminds of the 'sterlisation' drive orchestrated by the government, and has a brilliant moment when Gitanjali comes across the ire of the common folks from a woman struggling under a merciless sun. This is not a film about the Emergency era and naturally, the plight of the people is not the focus. But a bit more depth, as Luthria gave to his Mumbai stories and The Dirty Picture, could have taken Baadshaho to a higher level.

In addition to some compelling action, also on the plus side is the real-life mystery of the wealth that is intelligently handled; there are no filmy 'usual' resolves to the conflict, which again is a bold move. The boldest is how Luthria and Devgn give screen space for all - Vidyut Jamwal, for example; he often steals the scene. Every actor does justice to his/her roles.

Stronger writing with less of the repetitive lines, firmer editing, and more realistic approach to the central narrative without the predictable invincibility of the protagonists could have madeBaadshaho a more compelling film. For now, it is strictly time-pass.

Baadshaho

Starring: Ajay Devgn, Emraan Hashimi, Ileana D'Cruz

Directed by Milan Luthria

Now playing at theatres in the UAE

Rating: 2.5/5

total paisa vasool

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS..

ajay was brilliant..this guy lives the role..his walk..his gestures..his accent..man he really just dives into the character and so naturally..

emraan ditto..nailed the accent and his dialogues had the most response in the form of laughs and cheers..he was amazing

i thought the ladies may not have much to do here..but i was wrong

both illeana and esha had good roles

illeana has the most complex and layered character out of all and she nails the complexity of the character brilliantly..she is so grossly under-rated..she is one of the most expressive actresses around..particularly brilliant in that scene with ajay where she is insulted by a woman and she is in the car saying how she has many faces too just like the doll given to her

Esha was good too..very subtle and she has a good dialogue delivery..i was pleasantly surprised..and she is in like 75% of the movie..

the actor who was with them to assist in stealing gold was amazing too..hilarious at many places

Director has handled the movie pretty well

yes it drags a bit esp in some scenes pre interval but other than that it makes you totally involved

songs were appropriately placed and rakshe qamar and piya more were a treat to watch

overall..baadshaho was a deightful experience

3.75/5 stars from me

give it a shot!!

Waiting for this one, since the trailer came out. It looks set to make a big impact on BO as well.
The ensemble cast is absolutely kickass and nothing better than watching Ajay-Emraan combo in full form once again.

Ileana looks so beautiful and carries off the royal lady look like a boss..so her character is actually inspired from Gayatri Devi?

BM for reviews from members and critics.

Just saw the movie .

A decent entertainer that keeps you engrossed for the most part although the climax is a letdown when the mystery is revealed .

The film starts on a sluggish note with a slow paced narrative .It is after the heist portions begin , the actual thrill begins..What happens 15 minutes before the interval is absolutely breath taking .The twist at this point is quite unexpected .

However there are several rough edges too ..Emraan and Esha breaking into the prison is bit too much .Also the entire track of Gold refining seems unnecessary .

the biggest negative here is the climax when Ajay reveals the mystery which is really unconvincing and kinda dilutes the impact.Morever there should have been a proper culmination to Illenas character .The film ends rather hurriedly .

Ajay does well .He looks every inch the character that he is playing.Emraan Hashmi brings the house down ..He is a real scene stealer.

Illena surprises .She has a major part to play and her role is a complete shocker .She plays her part exceptionally well .Esha is gorgeous ..

Overall a decent film that entertains .

3/5

Baadshaho Decent - Shubh Mangal Saavdhan Low
Friday 01 September 2017 12.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Baadshaho had a decent start of around 25-30%. The opening of the film is similar to Toilet Ek Prem Katha at multiplexes but better in single screens but that does not necessarily mean a better opening day than Toilet Ek Prem Katha as the collections of that film shot up in the evening at multiplexes and this being an action film that is not likley. Though with a big holiday for Eid tomorrow it could help the evening collections. The opening of the film is better than Shivaay though that film opened with another major release and was a pre Diwali release and the budget of the film is also less than that film. The best opening is in Rajasthan probably due to the setting of the film and next best was UP.

There is the holiday for Eid tomorrow which should help though Saturday is probably not the best day to have the holiday as its a good day for the box offie and you really want a holiday on either Friday or another working day. The fate of the film will depend on how the multiplexes of the big A centres like Jaipur, Nagpur, Surat etc fair.

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is a low opening of 10-15% which is expected for a film with no popular faces but it is slightly better than Bareilly Ki Barfi as occupancy is same but Shubh Mangal Saavdhan has a wider release so it could do a slightly higher number than Bareilly Ki Barfi but it wont be much. Considering the competition of Baadshaho this is not bad but its going to come down to that Monday having to be at the level of Friday to get a good run. The weekend is not an issue as far as growth is concerned because from this level it is sure to grow and on top there is Eid on Saturday but Monday is the acid test.
