Nice write up. I like your musings because they are introspective in nature. And I agree why the outrage when someone likes the movie that you don't like, or doesn't like the movie that you liked. This reminded me of anupama's review of befikre, she gave it 3.5 stars and comments on her videos till date keep bringing that up. And I never understood it. Just because she is a critic doesn't mean she can't not enjoy a movie that masses find unappealing for whatever reason or even her fellow critics do. While being objectives and critical mostly is dandy and all, but why not take in account the different experiences that people have while watching a movie. So in this case Anupama ended up enjoying the movie because it aspired to her sense of fun and enjoyment. I don't think she deserves the outrage that review brought her. Anyways, I'm rambling uselessly here, Idk if this even makes sense. 😆

Agree completely with this. Why is there always so much outrage and anger over differing opinions? I was also one of the people that liked Befikre. I thought it was a fun, light-hearted romcom and I loved seeing Paris for the whole 2-3 hours. Why is there so much pressure to always have an opinion that agrees with the majority?

I'm seeing the same with JHMS. Most people hate it and they're allowed to but why are they so angry when someone doesn't? It's like these people come with pitchforks to demand that you agree with them and accept how bad the movie is just like they insist. There is so much insecurity even when it comes to majority opinions. It's just bizarre.

Well I think the movie failed because it WAS a crap movie. I, for one, am a diehard romcom genre fan. I can watch the crappiest of movies and come off smiling. So I went with an open heart. I even took my hubby with me(forced). Needless to say that he was dozing off.. so were the other two guys(presumably forced by their wives too) and I ended up cheering my nails to figure out where exactly the chemistry was. I loved Anushka but sharukh by far was the worst in the movie. It seemed like he himself wasn't believing in his own character. Like you say, the soul wasn't there at all. Not to mention that the songs though ok when heard individually did nothing to move me in the movie. They had no connection at all and seemed random pieces of music intervowen in between.

Why be so bothered that someone else did not enjoy the same thing? I need to let go. You need to let go. We all need to let go and be more laid back.

RTH - I love reading your ramblings. But I have one complaint - you mix too many issues in one rambling. I wish you made 4 different ramblings -

1) On people enjoy different movies

2) On flaws of JJ and BV - Please write more about the flaws, I love reading them coz you make so much sense and put a lot of my feelings in words👍🏼

3) Box office obsession

4) We are all victims and victimizers at the same time - Too good👏

On the topic, I am at the @bold stage where I enjoy the movies that I like and don't care about others. I am in state of zen now😆

This is really well written and I generally agree with the idea that taste is subjective. What works for you may not work for me and vice versa. I have said before, this forum always says all hits aren't good films and that's really true (although some stress on this more because their faves don't deliver hits but oy vey). That said, all flops aren't niche classics either. I feel the outrage about JHMS comes from the media and fan attempt to try to portray it as a misunderstood cult classic to some extent like it's often done for SRK's flops. Which gets tiring after a point. I feel rabid SRK protection in media and among his fanbase has given rise to such a bad reaction against his films. I remember being one of the few ones standing against his early bad films while people shut me out for daring to criticize his awful films (for me). But after a prolonged period of bad films and rabid defense, seems like everyone is speaking against his films, especially in India. I am sorry to have focused on one particular point in this article but since JHMS is the point of reference, I thought I will give it some context. Flops happen, people probably expected more from the Imtiaz-SRK association and ended up disappointed. Films are subjective too but this particular reaction isn't context-free. This is a build-up of several years of bad films. In our friend circle, even among the SRK fans, it's kind of an unsaid fact that SRK films are known to be average or bad. Younger people have grown up with his bad films only. So, they don't have the nostalgia to defend him and his films. This is what's happening in India, idk about anywhere else. Also, the complaints about people hating the film is a biased one because this forum is a prolonged fanwar. SRK groups are the majority here so the switch in narratives are pretty obvious. If JHMS worked, we'd hear the exact same thing, only from an opposite perspective where it will be informed that viewers matter, their genera perspective matters and so on. It's pretty obvious. Your energy is wasted in the middle of this prolonged fanwar between groups that change their narratives when suitable in my opinion. As a silent reader for a year, I have seen this happen constantly. Narrative switch when it works in the favour of the favourite. It is how it is. We all do it really.
But finally, your taste is subjective. So long as you can enjoy yours without bringing in other people and questioning their preferences, it's perfectly fine. For instance, this forum generally considers Aamir to be an inferior actor to SRK, I find SRK to be significantly worse than Aamir. Both are valid more or less because opinions are subjective. But it's difficult to answer why people expected a different film from what was supposed to be a romantic comedy. Probably they didn't? Probably it's just that the film is actually terrible for most people? They are equally valid.

It's the mob mentality. Internet has fostered that mentality to the maximum where any opinion but the majority's is going to be unacceptable. As the internet age thrives, respect for dissenting opinions is also lessening and it's so much easier for the twitter and social media key board warriors to attack people who disagree with them, because there is no sense of self in the online sphere, sometimes they don't even feel there is another person on the receiving end and wonder how they feel. And yes, there are ethical issues where someone HAS done something heinous or unacceptable and it's easier to understand why the outrage is there. But, people need to remember this is just a movie, not a life or death situation. It's a form of entertainment. Stop taking it so seriously and let people enjoy whatever they want to and respect that opinion. And heck even I'm guilty of getting carried away at times, but my criticism only extends to the movie and not to the individuals that enjoyed that movie and that's the way it should be.

Everything is subjective and everyone is partial about something or other. ...
Only a robot or machine can give objective and unbiased opinion...

Always watch movie with your instinct and interest and never because it's earning high in Bo or is trending. ..simple mantra if movie turns our to be bad come on forum and get ur money worth frustration out ...u paid for it lol

Agree with the mob mentality views. It's a sign of the times. If you notice, movies (or most things actually) are given a short period to be "un-judged". Then the majority opinion will come. It will either praise the things to the skies and hail it as the best thing ever, or trash it like it's the worst POS to have graced this planet. There is no middle ground.
If you fall in the minority, and dislike something the majority has deemed as amazing, there will be extreme outrage. Which will go from the movie in question, to your taste, to your upbringing and whatever else. Nowadays it is veering towards nationality. However, if you like something that has been deemed trash, you'll have some more outrage, of the same kind coming your way.
It's all about having one EXTREME opinion, and you better hope yours lines up with the popular one.

Look at BW itself, first Half Girlfriend was the worst movie EVER, then it was Raabta, then Tubelight and now JHMS. Let's see what's next.

But if I organized, it won't be a ramble but a well-structured report. 😆

I will have some more thoughts on my criticisms of movies. I enjoyed JJ and JHMS a lot, so not that much criticism there. BV, I wanted to shoot myself in the theater. I was traumatized.
