I have a different take on this
He had always loved Anjali
But subconsciously he never knew it
In college she was his best friend
He never saw her from that angle
But when she was leaving in the train
We see his desperation and pain
He tried to stop her but still she left
He missed her so played basketball
Even after 8 years he remembered her
When he describes her to Anjali and Dadi
We see a fond expression on his face
Later when he meets her in the summer camp
He is pleasantly surprised and is delighted
His heart always had a special place for her
Bu now he recognized those emotions
And he could understand his love for her
