Hey guys!

So I have a question on my mind that I was hoping you would be able to help me out with.
There has been so much debate on the topic of Item numbers from people defending it as a way of expression to many people criticising it and disapproving the presence of such songs in a film.
Many of these item numbers are being performed by very well respected and respectable actresses who have time and again proven their talent, and this post is in no way trying to bash or insult the actors/actresses, nor the concept of item numbers, all I want is to gain a broader insight about what the general consensus is.

We often catch ourselves humming and dancing to the same numbers and I want to know what you think about it? Do you like them, do you not? do you think it is a sign of empowerment, or do you see it as insulting?
Why are the majority, if not all, item numbers filmed on women? Where are the male item numbers an why are they not as popular?

I just want to know what you think, it is an opinion and so no matter where you stand, I will respect your view and there is no "wrong" answer, and there will certainly be no judgment on my side, both ends of the argument have valid points and I am hoping you will be as honest as possible.

Much love,
M. 😊

I personally feel item numbers are not essentially required
It can be used only in situations where it is applicable
For example a cop waiting to nab a criminal in a bar and an item number there
or the leads / any character has come to watch a function there can be an item number
Also I don't like to hear vulgar lyrics so they can be done away with

The way I see it, item numbers are better than the stalker "love songs".

In an item number the girl is dancing out of her free will, as opposed to a love song where the girl is getting harassed 99% of the time by some creep. She has no interest and the guy will follow her, stalk her, click pictures and do basically anything without having her consent. And the end of it the girl falls in love with him! This is a terrible image to set. worse than item numbers, imo.

I'm sure people will disagree but this is how I see it.

I have no problem with item numbers because it can help pay for some struggling actors career/daal roti etc. It does suck when big name actresses are taking over such item numbers and their rozi roti. If item numbers are not important then by same logic none other songs should be either because it is both a form of dance. Heroine forgotten she isnt dancing just for her hero but for entire audience.

LOVE THEM! If the placement of the song and visuals are tied to what is happing in the story, or at the end on the movie 😊

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, as far as I know music videos for songs not in a film is not common. If so, how do musicians and singers showcase their talent? In the US, musicians produce videos for music channels.

I would say it is unnecessary because it contributes nothing to the movie, it's all about the sex appeal. Also, after watching the video it felt like a modern form of slavery. But I am still divisive on this, I mean it provides jobs which their country cannot, that's still money for someone. So idrk. I just feel bad for the background dancers cus surely there are other better ways to make money through work that isn't so shitty. But who am I to say...I've been too privileged in life to know what unemployment might feel like. I find those item songs cringe inducing where the female is dancing while men throw money, gawk, and cheer.

Item songs like the ones Helen used to do in old movies, YES...she had grace and oomph and her dance did not look vulgar
But the item songs some heroines do nowadays, NAY...especially the ones with vulgar, disgusting lyrics like Tandoori Murgi 🤢
