Akshay Kumar narrates incident from own life to highlight child abuse

PTI | Jul 28, 2017, 02:49 AM IST
Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar today narrated an incident from his own life to highlight the risk children face in day-to-day life, and importance of communication to identify sexual predators.

He was speaking at an international conference on human trafficking here.

"Let me share my own experience with you all here. When I was a very young kid, a lift-man once touched me inappropriately.

"Since I had good communication with my parents, I told them about this incident," he said.

Later the same person was caught in another case and was found to be a habitual offender, the actor said.

Parents and children must have a free interaction so that such offenders are identified immediately, Kumar said.

Parents need to be open with their children and teach them what is ok what isn't ok and which areas are a no go for touching. They should give them keywords in case kids have difficulty explaining. Sometimes they might not even be able to explain hence parents need to pay close attention to any behavioral changes. And generally speaking it is always someone close to the child or who the child knows that do these type of things so parents need to be vigilant around who has easy access to their children.

Yes. This is wonderful if it's true. Parents should also not put their blind faith in auto rickshaw drivers. I've seen them fill kids like can of sardines. They even sit in the drivers lap on both sides of his seat and overload the auto. Not only this is dangerous but also putting the kids at risk. People should either drop off their kids to school or make sure their only sit in the back and not in front. And I don't mean to judge but some women are just too busy watching tv or waking up late while kids are out on their own and husband is at work. I know it's asking a lot to watch kids all the time but these are bad times and parents need to smarten up.

Sexual abuse issues in India is still very neglected and it's good more awareness is being done. Even in Akshay's case above it seems nothing much was done as the lift man was able to repeat his offendes God knows how many times before he got caught. I don't agree his parents did anything remarkable. You touch my kid or any kid infront of my eyes and I will split you ear to ear and gladly go to jail.

Mere bete ke school main , school organised a class and showing cartoon video abt bad touch and good touch on projector to student ... even every parents meeting they insist ki parents baccho se baat kare abt these things. sometime parents ko lagta hai baccha school ke liye mana kar raha hai normal things but as per school if they feel their child activity is suspicious or suddenly he dnt want to go with someone or school , its not normal thing talk with child and know the reason

I agree Zandu. Parents should be open and transparent with kids. Communication is key.

It is so essential to create awareness about these topics
There are so many terrible incidents daily
It is still a taboo topic for many people

And the worst part is unless its an actual rape some people dont see molestation or inappropriate touching on the same way and brush it off.

But did the parents take action?
The issue isn't resolved once the child has communicated with the parents. We also have to educate the parents to take the right action in an effort to prevent this from happening to other children.

But yes, it's a step in the right direction to finally open up about these issues and its commendable of Akshay to do so. It puts him in a vulnerable position but he's willing to take it on for the sake of a higher cause.

I may be wrong but to me it sounds like they screamed at him "himmat kaise hue tumhari - aaynda se aisa kabhi nai karna".
