"Kama" does not mean lust alone. In broad sense, it is desire (Kaamna in Hindi). Sometimes high ambition can also be kama.

Similarly "Dharma" does not exactly mean religion or piousness. It means duty. For a warrior, Kshyatriya Dharma is about waging war (Bhagvad Gita). For a king, Raja Dharma is looking after all his subjects, whoever they are. (Vajpayee's criticism on Modi).

Yes. In Hindu tradition, Kama is one of the steps to be travelled. But not the ultimate goal. Steps (Purushaartha) goes like this.

"Dharma, Artha (wealth), Kama, Moksha ".

Ultimate goal is Moksha/Mukti. Mukti again does not mean "Heaven" or God's abode. Mukti means ultimate freedom. Mukta is someone who has set himself free (like bandha mukta, who has been freed from chains). It could be freeing oneself out of birth cycles, or freeing oneself out of his desires. To reach this state, one has to travel through the path of Dharma, Artha and Kama.

Consider Bill Gates. He started of as a programmer (Dharma/duty). Set up a company (Artha/wealth). Microsoft held a monopoly in PC operating systems (Kama/desire). At the end, becomes a philanthropist and gets rid of his attachments. He could not have reached the last step, if he did not go through the initial phases.
