There are so many languages. How many language should I really learn? We live in digital era, where everybody knows everybody. So, if one state's person meets another state person say in some other state, in which language should we converse? English? Because it is the gift from great Britain!

We can use English to unite nation as one, but not Hindi (Once again, my mother tongue is not Hindi) Using English doesn't degrade all other languages of India, but Hindi does because guess what it was born in India and being an Indian it is our duty to love what other country's people give us instead of something which was in our country. English unite us and Hindi just degrades other languages.

I would love to learn all languages, but sorry I can't. There are just too many. Suppose I go to East India or Chennai for a holiday, do you expect me to learn the local language for 10 days holiday? Do you expect people from foreign country to learn any of the Indian language? No! Then we are okay with their English..

If we are so fine being united, why I have been continuously reading 'South India, only SI contributes to India's success and what not?' If we belong to one Nation then why our success and sorrows are not one. India is a country, where I can bet all languages can easily be prevailed.

And the way we are fighting, I don't know what kind of picture of our country we are depicting to the world.

PS: I guess it's high time, we go back to our roots and simply use either sign language or Sanskrit (Heard it is the ancient language). Because in this big country with so many culture, regions, languages and dialects, there is nothing we can do..

PPS: BTW, Hindi is not the main language of North India also. There are many languages that prevails in NI.

I am sorry if I hurt anybody's sentiments

I m all for learning Sanskrit and making it the only official language. Atleast there will be some sort of equality left in that process.

Ya we should. Sanskrit is a mother of all languages then why not (I hope I am right). I cannot speak my mother tongue, but I understand it just fine. I want to learn it because it belongs to me. Ultimately, I feel as a big country, we should find a solution that is easy for all and not fight among ourselves

Sanskrit is not the mother of all languages. There are three language families spoken predominantly in India. Only the Indo-Aryan languages come from Sanskrit.

I don't feel like explaining things over again which has been explained again and again in 20 plus pages.

English is a neutral language. Hindi is one regional language put above others. Look at the state of those languages people call 'languages' when it's convenient to them and 'dialects' other times.

We have no desire to lose our languages the way others have been sidelined.

English does not replace the local language in a systematic way. Hindi replaces the local language that way. (Yes, people can get by and live with English, but implementation wise it is Hindi which leads to local languages being phased out.) If you don't feel that to be the case, fine. But that is the case which many feel in South and other areas--by this I mean, English is not opposed as s compulsory subject but opposition to compulsory Hindi now simmering and growing. Because English acts as a global language and link language. If English is agreed to be a necessary language to learn, there is no need for Hindi or Sanskrit to be taught to everyone.

There will never be a solution cause its another quite good vote bank politics for politicians. Peopl's problems is seldom solved here. Its not just about learning languages. I already know Hindi and can speak fine and understand it. I also know my mother tongue and English to communicate with the rest. Maybe if I go to the south someday I will learn those languages too. I had friends from south in school but they used to communicate in english all the time so never got the oppurtunity or the common sense to learn something from them ( never realised the importance). But they were sweet enough to learn some bengali from me. Learning something new is never bad. It only makes u better. What is bad is when u r stubborn not to learn anything but expect the rest to do it anyways. And its the Government that sides with them.

One fine example happened today. Culture Minister posted something about Elephanta caves in Hindi. It was a picture so I couldn't even used the translator to know what was written. I thought maybe he will post it in english too but it never came. He didn't even write it in English for the rest to know. I can't read hindi that well. Mostly its guess work from the way I communicate. So I didn't get to know what was written. Apparently knowing about our culture is only for the hindi medium people. Rest doesn't need to knw anything. How was it fair?

Lets come to Government exams that are taken in Hindi and English language only, at the central level. So a hindi medium student has nothing to worry he will understand the paper well. I can't say the same for the rest of the people who might have dared to get their education in their mother tongue. How is that fair ?where is the equality in such a process.Hindi speaking class has an advantage over others I remember some of my bengali friends took up Hindi as their second language in school giving up on Bengali completely. I never understood why but today I understand it well. To be able to compete when it matters. But the truth is be it english or hindi we are learning a foreign language anyways. Its not the same for a hindi medium. Hindi is not the only language that brings us back to our roots. My roots are in bengal and in bengali. It doesn't receive the same respect. Atleast with Sanskrti u know everyone will have to learn something new.Even the ones who oppose everything and files a case in court when their conveniences are at risk.

^^ I agree with everything you say except Sanskrit. What's the need for Sanskrit? Already Even Hindi Belt understands need for English. Yogi made English compulsory from Class 1. So what is need for Sanskrit, which assumes all Indian languages are Indo-Aryan? They are not.

Sanskrit is not a spoken language and you want to make that as link language, when there is already English.

And trust me people from Hindi medium are also looked down upon. I am from English medium so I don't have to face this problem, but a few of my colleagues are dissed upon because of bad English.

Its because she said English is a foreign language and its not Indian enough. Sanskrit has Indian roots and also dead language 😆 So everyone has to go that extra mile learning it. Nothing to do with assumptions and all. I do agree in the era of globalisation English gives an advantage to everyone. But some will always oppose it saying its a foreign language. Truth is we need to learn more languages in order to connect. There is no other way in a country where the dialect changes with every three miles and where the literacy rate is pretty low.

I haven't read all pages, but based on last couple, I get the drift of the thread.

I personally don't understand the huge hue and cry over Hindi threatening mother tongue of the region. I am Gujarati and have studied in Gujarati medium all my school life. Hindi was a subject and so was English. Everyone picked up Hindi easily and it felt more 'Apna' than English could ever do.

Yet, I never felt Hindi threatening existence of Gujarati. In fact, I feel with the rise of English Medium schools, Kids these days, don't even know to read or write Gujarati. You ask them something in Gujarati, they will answer you in English. I feel English is the one threatening existence of my mother tongue. So I should oppose English then.

And with such mindset, India can never have a Language that is spoken all across the country. I am someone who sees us as one and not different. Yes, we are different but the core is all same.

Let's see. My Mom knows Gujju & Hindi. She goes to a South state for travel. Residents there do not know Hindi and obviously they won't know Gujarati. So? Either my Mom first learn English or She should just be in Gujarat & not visit any other states I suppose as per some here. 😆

We had a Neighbor from Tamilnadu. Class 1 officer in Govt. job. Fond memories I have with his family. He stayed in Gujarat for 20 years and was our neighbor for 5 years. He never learned Gujarati. And yet we got along super fine.

I know so many of such South Indians staying in Gujarat for so many years, their kids being born in Gujarat. All on high Govt jobs position. And hardly anyone has learned Gujarati after migration. Kids even after being born in Gujarat do not know the language. But I have never heard any Gujju person having any issue with them not learning local language. Coz it's not easy. They are not born with it. And I understand it.

Gujarat are migrant labors from Rajasthan, Bihar, UP. Most restaurants in Gujarat have Rajasthani & Nepali staff. And they all converse in Hindi. Never heard any Gujju having issue with it. Never heard a complain that.. they come here and don't learn Gujarati. Guess what.. we don't expect migrants to do that. We accommodate. Coz they are Indians. Apne hai. That's what the feeling is.

And if we are talking about Communities having issue in integrating, then I will share some of my experiences.
So many of Tamils and Telugu people I hear shouting in their phones while traveling in Trains here in USA. It disturbs others. But they don't care. I feel that is so rude.
I was at doc's office and one Indian lady started talking with her husband while waiting for her turn. In her local language. So loud she was.. I can't fathom. Seating next to her was a Pregnant lady who had to bear it.
Everyday outside at work, I hear a Telugu guy talking to India on speaker phone in lunch time. In the lobby of the work area.

So many times, If I am sitting with 2 Tamils, they start talking in their own language while I seat there.. all awkward. Isn't it a basic manner that you shouldn't be speaking in your Mother language when the 3rd person doesn't understand it?

You will find all these same examples in Gujarati people too.
Now these are some examples. And, I do not judge all South Indians based of it.
Coz I have met and known some amazing ones in my life to NOT generalize.

Point is, Majority Indians are good at migrating & integrating with local communities. But Not all. You will find these examples from every state every community. That is no threatening point to any culture.

Lastly, I am of the opinion that.. A country should have a Unified language. That is it's own. We are in era of globalization and here we are fighting over regions. Pitty.

If you don't have problem with English being the common Language, then I just don't get the issue with Hindi?
English is definitely threatening existence of my mother language, yet I don't crucify it coz living outside of India, I know how important it is to know English to integrate on world level.

Yet, I want my country to have it's own Unified language. And if Majority is comfortable with Hindi. I see no issue of adapting to it. It's the vastly adapted medium. It has been there since independence and I know that.. we can't get rid of it & replace it with English. Not all classes can afford to learn English. It's anyways not ours. Hindi main Apnapan lagta hai. Angreji mein nahi.

About ignorance, Well Every region is ignorant of other region in India. I am sure many of you make fun of Gujju people for their hilarious English accent. 😆

I read a few pages and trust me what you wrote looked more like your hate towards NI and Hindi. You referring to yourself as South Indian instead of Indian just shows that you don't consider yourself as part of India.

Anyway, you continue with your life agenda. I am fine as long as I can communicate with others. For me people in general are far above than language and even if they don't know my language but can converse in language that I know a little bit about, I will help them. And still if I cannot, I will go with layman sign language.

PS: I never look down upon any language. Each and every language is beautiful. I would love to learn as many languages as I can, but as a human, it is not as easy..

Best of luck for your motto.. Please continue

I m a south Indian? 😕 I also hate hindi? I also wrote several posts in this thread? I think u need to read again.
