Tamil is still ruling in TN because the people keep it that way by resisting. I mean, try talking to the auto drivers there in Hindi and see the response you get.

In comparison, you have Bangalore, where if there is some shopkeeper or driver who doesn't know Kannada, the attitude is not one of "I don't know it yet, but I am trying to learn Kannada" but one of "Well, I speak in Hindi, and I am waiting for you to reply back in Hindi"

Why is Hindi needed to "survive"? I thought the language of survival to live and work as a global citizen is English?

On topic, I agree, and not just in terms of film industry, In general the South gets a raw deal from the "national media" based out of Mumbai and Delhi. Case in point : the Chennai floods coverage.

And this is exactly why Bangalore and Hyderabad are growing at breakneck speeds and Chennai and Kolkata...well let's just say their glory days are behind them. It's in the attitude. Every state needs immigrants and making them comfortable by having a common language, whether it's Hindi or English doesn't mean that you're betraying your own.
I know for a fact, that graduates from top notch northern universities are more than willing to move to Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad but Chennai companies leave with nothing. So who exactly is Tamil nationalism hurting? You want to live in your cacoon...fine, but in the time of globalization you're only hurting yourself.

OMG... How dense can you be. You know English, the people who know English will fill it out in English. But the other option is only Hindi. (Though not for some road markers even in South India which the gov't has made just Hindi.)

Hyderabad has a Urdu local history. But good luck with your blindness, because Bangalore and Karnataka will be the biggest protesters to Hindi imposition this time around. And no, they will not suffer either for it either, despite your hopes and dreams for it to happen.

TN has never been against globalization. You talk as if Tamil Nadu was hostile to English. And by the way, TN has always had migrants and laborers who learnt Tamil. It's actually the middle class obnoxiousness who always had problem with TN--those who know English but still have issues with Tamils refusing to accommodate their obnoxious need to impose Hindi.

see there is no debate here there has been anti-hindi agitations in tamil nadu since forever. there is a difference in protesting for convinience to keep all three languages tamil,hindi,english and protesting out of sheer hate for the language and north indians!!. your statement "north's ignorance of south" is proof enough!!

There is a bit of truth in both (What you are saying and KK). True, immigrants are assets for growing states. Places like Bangalore and Hyderabad are more accommodating than conservative city like Chennai. Having said all these, natives still have that expectation from the migrant community. They hope, eventually the migrant population will embrace the native culture(/language). When that does not happen even after decades/ generation, intolerance slowly builds up. What shows up in Mumbai is that.

As a Punjabi (I presume), you might not get it. You may not have experienced influx of people from different culture where Punjabis are reduced to a minority in Punjab. (Just imagine, people from Tamilnad or Bihar settling in Amritsar for a generation, without learning Punjabi). This has happened in Mumbai/Bangalore (22% Marathi speakers in Mumbai, 32% Kannadigas in Bangalore). Hence the intolerance.

Tamilnad has never opposed English or advancement. In fact, English continued its presence in India because of Tamilnad insistence. But yes, it is quite protective about preserving native culture.

As for imposing nature, I am afraid, I have to include Tamils too in this category. They (not all, but quite a few) struggle to integrate (learn the native language) unlike other South Indian states. Instead they prefer to manage using English. In Bangalore, there is more intolerance towards such Tamils than North Indians (North Indian's stay has been from a decade or two). But some Tamils have stayed for a generation without learning Kannada.

we do have genration of bihari's,haryanvi, people from UP in punjab who can't speak punjabi!! there are sikh people living in punjab who can't speak punjabi!!

I get the frustration. We have marwaris settling in Bengal for decades and never learning a word of bengali. The limit crosses when it starts interfering with our personal lives. Imagine a teacher coming in who can't speak in any other language other than Hindi. He expects bengalis to understand hindi so starts teaching in Hindi, when someone don't understand his explanations properly he tries his broken english and fail comes back to Hindi. Now its not like people don't understand hindi but not to the extent that they will take their education in Hindi. So how is it fair for us to go through this . This is just an example of what I saw few weeks back . Its not our mother tongue we still learn it cus it gets easier we also learn a third language english but how many of the hindi speaking states learn anything other than their mother tongue. They don't have to learn anything cus Government will give them everything in their mother tongue unlike others who have to keep struggling with different languages wherever we go and in every field of our lives.
