Baahubali 2: Here's our hot-off-the-screen review

UAE cinemas clock 120,000 advance-booking admissions on the opening day of the latest installment of the epic movie about Mahishmati Kingdom

Gulf News Rating: 3.5 stars out of 5

Synopsis: When Shiva, the son of Bahubali, learns about his heritage, he begins to look for answers. His story is juxtaposed with past events that unfolded in the Mahishmati Kingdom.

IT was oddly cathartic to find out why Katappa, a loyal aide, killed his valiant master Baahubali.

The second installment of the highly-anticipated fantasy fiction adventure by director S.S Rajamouli went all out to de-mystify that brutal betrayal.

But was the mystery life-altering? No. It was painfully predictable and you saw it coming just like the arrows that seemed to fly from the bows of the fighting troops in Baahubali series.

But don't give up on this special effects-laden visual extravaganza. This is a sweeping visual spectacle filled with epic battle scenes, clashes between warring troops from Indian mythology and elephants on a rampage.
Prabhas, who plays a dual role in this hit franchis, does the heavy lifting.

Baahubali " which mean a man with strong arms " lives up to the meaning behind his name. He is magnetic enough to pull this mammoth film to the finish line.
Anushka Shetty, who plays a fearless princess Devasena, is graceful and complements Prabhas. But be warned, the film is 175 minutes long and precious time is lost setting up the scene of the crime.

The vanilla romance between Devasena and Baahubali Sr. is tedious and the technical crew seems to have gone overboard with the colours.
The psychedelic gardens and the bright landscapes make you yearn for a pair of sunglasses.
Web of deception, conspiracy

But the pace picks up considerably in the second half and the colours are not as bright. The deception, the web of conspiracy to mislead queen Shivagami (played ably by Remya Krishnan) by her evil son Bhallaldeva (a perennially-snarling Rana Daggubati) and the epic battle scene towards the end makes this film engaging.

The climax featuring the blood, visceral clash between the good vs the evil troops, is perhaps, one of the most elaborate ones in Indian cinema. Think galloping horses, a woman holding severed heads, hero leaping from the horse to the castle and arrows flying in all directions and swords being plunged into torsos.
While the battlefield scenes were long and detailed, it wasn't exhausting. What was tiring was the hamming by the actors who played the subjects and the commoners in that fictional Indian kingdom.

The 175-minute visual feast is long and some trimming of the comic scene in the first half would have helped. The scene in which the hero pretends to stammer for comic relief wasn't particularly tasteful.

If the first installment had a giant waterfall and a shirtless hero emerging from the water holding a mammoth stone deity, then the second part had several of those visually extravagant scenes.

Baahubali taming a wild elephant on a bloody rampage, wild boars being shot down by arrows and him leaping from trees and flying across the sky are some of the grand examples.
But large doesn't always mean better. While the scale of the second part is bigger, the soul seemed stronger in the first instalment.

There were times in the second half where you felt the computer-generated graphics took over the story. But all this is new and exotic for Indian cinema.
Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is a colorful amalgamation of hit serials like Game Of Thrones and those archaic Indian mythological series such as Mahabharata or the Ramayna. It's bloody, gory and has an indefatigable hero who know how to slay his opponents.
Watch this if you are a fan of fantasy fiction and love tales of warrior kings and fierce queens.

ADVANCE BOOKINGS

In the UAE, advance cinema bookings have clocked 120,000 admissions on the opening day.
"This is historical and we have never witnessed something so big. Usually films starring Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan or Salman Khan get around 50,000 or 60,000 admissions and this is double," said Ahmad Golchin from Phars Film, the local distributor. It's also the first time that they are releasing a film simultaneously in four languages in over 180 screens.

Baahubali 2 The Conclusion Review

Baahubali The Beginning was an industry hit and no film has beaten the record till date. Expectations are sky high on Baahubali 2 The Conclusion. Let's see whether Baahubali part 2 is up to the mark or not...

Story:
Rajamatha Shivagami (Ramya Krishna) suggests Baahubali (Prabhas) to roam in distant villages of Mahishmathi kingdom and Kattappa is sent along with him. Baahubali reaches Kunthala kingdom where he falls flat for the beauty of princess Deva Sena (Anushka), though he won't reveal his identity to anybody over there. Baahubali helps Kunthala kingdom from the deadly Pindaarees. Deva Sena also starts admiring Baahubali, after watching his gutsy attitude. Meanwhile, Bhallala Deva (Rana) makes sketches to target Baahubali. What are they? Whom Shivagami will listen to- Baahubali or Bhallala Deva? What circumstances influences Kattappa to kill Baahubali? How Amarendra Baahubali (Prabhas) takes revenge for his father's death? To know answers for all these queries you need to watch the film on big screen.

Positives:
1. Part 1 Story Revelation In Titles With 3D Characters
2. Anushka Gorgeous In Songs
3. Music
4. Rajamouli Mark Elevations
5. War Sequence In First Half
6. Prabhas

Negatives:
1. Few Boring Scenes Here And There
2. CG Work In Second Half
3. Unnecessary Comedy

Analysis:

Baahubali 2 starts with Kattappa narrating back story of Baahubali to the latter's son Amarendra Baahubali. Shivagami performs rakshasa vadha yagam where Baahubali makes entry in style to save her from giant elephants. The way Baahubali takes the elephants under his control and how he helps Shivagami to complete the yaga is shown productively. Later, Anushka is introduced as Deva Sena, Princess of Kunthala Kingdom and she takes on bandits in very first scene. This action sequence where Baahubali and Kattappa help Deva Sena to finish the bandits is a treat to watch. Then, Baahubali assists Deva Sena's men finishing off Pindaarees who attack Kunthala Kingdom. The way bulls were used to take on the deadly Pindaarees is impressive. When Bhallala Deva is appointed as Mahishmathi King owing to some reasons and Baahubali is appointed as Senadhipathy, people in the kingdom roars in support of Baahubali. This sequence will give goosebumps to audiences. Bhallala Deva and his father Bijjaladeva makes their plans to slay Baahubali. Actual drama starts here with how they influence Rajamatha to change her opinion on Baahubali. Deva Sena and Rajamatha conflict is shown effectively. Then comes the sequence of Kattappa killing Baahubali, which can't be told simply as there's a long process for Kattappa to make his mind on this. Meanwhile, Kalakeyas attack Mahishmathi kingdom. There's no explanation on this- why did they attack all of the sudden and what's the purpose behind it. Then, the rest of the story is how Amarendra Baahubali takes revenge for his father's death. Climax war sequence is not up to the mark, maybe because of mediocre CG work. Overall, Baahubali 2 hardly has magical moments like in first part such as Shivudu (Prabhas) climbing waterfall. Other negativity is Rajamouli botched to deal romantic sequences.

Artists Performances:
Prabhas steals the show with his performance. He has dominated completely with his tremendous show from start to end. He is too good in war episodes. Apparently, Prabhas worked hard to make himself perfect to act in deadly action sequences. Rana Daggubati is good. But, he was overshadowed by Prbhas. It was an eye feast to watch them (the two hulks) fight in the climax war episode. Anushka is pretty in songs. You are sure to be bowled out by her beauty in 'past' episodes. Ramyakrishna is ultimate as usual and Sathyaraj too makes great impact. Subbaraj tried to provide some laughs, which actually weren't worked out. Nasser is good. Tamannah appears only in pre-climax and climax episodes.

Technical Aspect:
Director SS Rajamouli is our Telugu pride. His story telling is simply amazing. There is drama and emotions in part two which were actually missing in part one. However, Rajamouli should have included some magical moments here and there to please audiences who watch the film with great expectations. Overall, there's no director in India who can deal all emotions precisely like Rajamouli do. Cinematography by Senthil is top notch and music by MM Keeravani is fascinating. While songs were hummable, background score was enchanting. Editing was sharp. Production values of Arka Media are high in standard.

Verdict:
Baahubali 2 is a must watch for all section of audiences. The visuals, making, cinematography, story narration and direction are simply superb. So, don't miss the film.

TeluguOne Perspective:
Baahubali+Baahubali=Baahubali 2

Rating: 3.75

BAAHUBALI 2 MOVIE REVIEW
Home > Tamil Movie Reviews

Review By : Behindwoods Review Board Release Date : Apr 28,2017 Movie Run Time : 2 hours 51 minutes
Censor Rating : U/A

Easily the biggest Indian film of the year, Baahubali 2 is finally out for us to get entertained and take another trip to the magnificent Magizhmadhi. An enthralling historical fantasy tale that shows how a royal family gets torn apart by sibling rivalry. We saw only a bit of the core plot in the first edition. This one is more extensive but is it as engrossing as the first part? Read to know more.
If you are looking to know 'why Kattappa killer Baahubali', we think you are peeping into a wrong window. This is a completely a spoiler-free review. But if you ask us how exciting is that twist, we would say, some would have guessed it right, some may not have, but Baahubali 2 has much more than just that.
Labeling this movie just as a visual wonder would be wrong as Baahubali franchise has a lot more that needs to be celebrated equally. It has some good emotions, fights that could compete with any international ever made, gripping screenplay that keeps you hooked right through and majorly a powerful revenge script filled with adequate mass moments. Every 15 minutes, you would have one kickass sequence which arrests your attention.
The film starts off with a few conventional scenes. Then there comes the love story between Prabhas and Anushka which is packed with an interesting twist. It has a consistent screenplay in the first half. Comedies and dialogues worked better in the first half. The second half is more serious and that is where the core script unfolds but however it does hamper the pace of the film and the later half of the 2nd half might not satisfy the huge expectation bestowed upon the film.
Thanks to Sathyaraj's humour sense which was used wisely by SS Rajamouli. The performance has deepened in this part. Anushka has a meaty role here and she looked so perfect for it, however, there are a few continuity issues as few of scenes were shot way earlier. Anushka' weight played a spoilsport but you may never notice that because the screenplay looks tight and it does not let you deviate. Prabhas is a powerhouse of talent and gives you an impression that no one else would play Baahubali better than him. Rana as Bhalvaldeva is as menacing as ever and shines big time.
Where Baahubali 2 could have been better would be its finish line. The climax fight is the most expected scene of the film but however one wonders that could have been dealt better. Seeing too much of elder Baahubali, reduces the weight in Shivudu's character. That is one reason you may not enjoy the climax as much as the 1st part's ending.
The lyrics in Tamil looked average but the background score was great. Technically the film is brilliant as expected. On the whole Baahubali 2 is a masterfully made sequel which is grandly conceived, brilliantly executed and largely engaging.

Verdict: Baahubali is back with more grandness and emotions but with a slightly less engaging screenplay in the second half

3.25/5

Baahubali 2 movie review: Prabhas is the strength of Baahubali The Conclusion (No Spoilers)

Baahubali 2 movie review: Prabhas and Anushka Shetty deliver brilliant performances but does the SS Rajamouli film have that wow factor we have come to expect?

Written by Hari Acharya | Dubai | Published:April 27, 2017 9:31 pm
Baahubali 2 movie review, Baahubali 2 review, Baahubali 2, Baahubali 2 movie, Baahubali 2 film, Baahubali the conclusion, baahubali 2 images Baahubali 2 movie review: Why Kattappa killed Baahubali is handled ably by director SS Rajamouli.

Baahubali 2 movie cast: Prabhas, Rana Dagguabti, Anushka Shetty, Tamannaah Bhatia, Ramya Krishnan, Sathyaraj
Baahubali 2 movie director: SS Rajamouli

As SS Rajamouli's Baahubali 2, or the aptly titled Baahubali: The Conclusion, begins, the focus is back on why Rajmata Sivagami (Ramya Krishnan) chose Baahubali (Prabhas) over Bhalla Deva (Rana Daggubati) as the future king of Mahishmati. Prabhas returns as Baahubali and Shiva and he is the mainstay of the film. Rajamouli has been unequivocal about Prabhas' commitment to the franchise and when you watch Baahubali 2, you realise that few could have done justice to the character like Prabhas does.

The actor is brilliant as he portrays vulnerability and toughness with amazing ease and lends credibility to the character. He gets able support from Anushka Shetty as Devasena. The film revolves around the two of them and their performances are the film's highlights.

Anushka Shetty's character arc in Baahubali 2 is impressive.

And now for the question which the audience has been waiting for with bated breath - why Kattappa killed Bahubali? While we are not giving away any spoilers we can assure you that Rajamouli deals with it tactfully. In fact, the film has two major twists and the Kattappa mystery is one of them. Rajamouli, who also wrote the screenplay of the film, should be given due credit for dealing with it ably.

However, as you settle in for a rollicking ride full of valour and war, palace intrigue and unanswered questions, the film suddenly takes a pace back and delves into back stories. The first half goes into establishing the love story of the lead characters, due to which Baahubali 2's pace suffers. The film drags and you wish that the makers had been stricter at the editing table. It is only when Rajamouli starts talking about why Kattappa killed Baahubali in the second half that the film gets interesting.

Another grouse is the film's VFX and much-touted war scenes. After the stupendous fare that we saw in Baahubali 1, the film's special effects come as a let-down of sorts. The fight or action sequences have Singham written all over them and the much-hyped climax has an over-the-top quality to it.

In the end, one is left asking the question if this sequel was warranted? Baahubali 2 is too long, the songs and background score is mediocre and the director has favoured gloss over content, which fails to hold the interest for long.

Watch out this space for Indian Express reviewer Shubhra Gupta's review of Baahubali 2.

'Baahubali-2' is in theatres, finally. Here is our review:

Story:

Amarendra Baahubali, the king-designate of Mahishmathi, goes on a trip across the kingdom to understand the ground situation on the orders of Sivagami (Ramya Krishna). Accompanying him is Kattappa (Sathyaraj). In the small kingdom of Kuntala, Baahubali falls in love with the gutsy Devasena (Anushka) at first sight.

A rom-com track involving Baahubali, Kattappa, Devasena and Kumara Varma (Subbu Raju as Devasena's bava) follows.

Meanwhile in Mahishmathi, the brother in distress Bhallaladeva (Rana Daggubati) and his father (Nasser) are seething with rage because the throne has eluded the former, thanks to what they perceive as Sivagami's unfairness. It's at this point that Bhallaladeva comes to know about his brother Baahubali's interest Devasena. He devises a plot to win Devasena by hook or crook. As Sivagami doesn't know the truth about Baahubali's love interest, Bhallaladeva cons her into believing that he wants to marry the gorgeous Devasena as he loves her.

When Sivagami sends a message to the Kuntala Princess about her son's interest in entering into an alliance with her, a mistaken identity leads to curious consequences. Furthermore, Devasena's adverse reaction to the offer leads to earth-shattering consequences.

What are they and how do they suck every character into a thick plot? Will Amarendra abide by the constitution of Mahishmathi or follow 'dharma' as Sivagami taught him? What is Sivagami's role in deciding the destiny of Amarendra? Why does Kattappa kill Baahubali? How does Mahendra Baahubali avenge his father's assassination? Answers to these questions are found in the second half.

Analysis:

While visual spectacle was expected, to what extent has Vijayendra Prasad succeeded as a story-writer will be subjected to rigorous analysis in the coming days. It's because of the hype that came to surround the Baahubalian question of why Kattappa killed Baahubali.

Perhaps, some stories create greatest curiosity when left half-unsaid. Some questions are sexy, whether or not the answers are. Whether the reason why Kattappa kills Baahubali is really mind-blowing is better left half-unsaid for now.

Let's assess two elements first. The first one has to do with Rajamouli's biggest strength: heroism. The second one has to do with his alleged weakness: comedy.

The director rocks it as far as the first is concerned. As luck would have it, there are two heroes here - Amarendra and Mahendra. Take for example the former's introduction scene. It's stylized, symbolic and emotional, all while giving a visual high. The mother has to complete a ritual so that the kingdom is saved from ruin from a dangerous famine. Cruelly enough, a wild elephant starts going on a rampage. Sivagami can't afford to step back. Enter the hero, who single-handedly tames the beast. In one scene, Rajamouli sets the tone for the element of mother-son equations that are going to be the strongest leitmotif for the rest of 160 minutes.

And comedy. It's Rajamouli's weakness for a reason. Kumara Varma, Deva Sean's incompetent 'bava', has to be made to believe that he is ferocious. Kattappa has to overdo it. And Amarendra has to woo Devasena this way. Scene after scene, the comedy falls flat, complete with Kattappa doing a 'Devudo.. devuda', a la the '90s era Brahmanandam.

Writing-wise, Devasena's reactions to events that happen in her life are the film's biggest surprise element. As a strong-minded woman who doesn't tolerate an iota of disrespect, she speaks truth to power as represented by the patriarchal Sivagami, who herself turns out to be drunk with arrogance. The face-off between the two strong women characters needs a separate review altogether. They drive the story with their game-changing decisions.

The interval bang episode is the best part, more than the climax. The salutations taken by hundreds of soldiers is brilliantly conceived.

Does the writing have its share of flaws? If you think Amarendra's reaction to his banishment from the kingdom should have come with more heft and drama. If you think Sivagami should have been seen more and not necessarily only when the criminals are around. If you think Amarendra's best punch lines should have been with the main antagonists, and not with Kumara Varma.

The war episodes come with stratagems and stunning graphics. The climax war is complete with a strong emotional touch involving mother-son sentiment, with interludes of Nasser's Bijaladeva trying to once again get Kattappa do his bidding, etc.

The graphics are organic to Rajamouli's creative ideas, and not there just for the sake of it. In terms of the force of the main war, one has to say that the war involving Amarendra, Bhallala and Kalakeya in the first part was more appealing.

Prabhas delivers his most emotionally-variegated performance here. As Mahendra, he has no time or scope to relax, as he enters the scene just before the climax. As Amarendra, he does fun, he does romance, he shows pain in his mother's presence, etc.

Ramya Krishna's irreverent sitting posture oozing hurt ego deserves kudos. Rana Daggubati is convincing, much like in the first half. Somehow, the way he reacts when Amarendra is killed is old villainy and it could have been avoided. Anushka's measured fit of rage is beautiful. Otherwise, she looks gorgeous and gutsy throughout. Sathyaraj once again emotes so well with his eyes. His comedy, however, puts us off. The mean Nasser and the bumbling Subbu Raju fit the bill. Tamannah is seen in a few shots and has no line.

MM Keeravani's songs were better in the first part. The graphics-heavy duet on board Mahishmathi could well be chopped off. His BGM gets contemporary only here and there. KK Senthil Kumar's cinematography is breathtaking. The sheer scale and the very many landscapes are captured to a great effect.

Verdict:

'Baahubali-2' has its share of hits and misses, writing-wise. How far the audience enjoy the scenes leading up to Baahubali's murder at Kattappa's hands will determine the film's enormity of success. First-rate performances, Devasena and Sivagami's decisions and the visuals are big hits. The war episode may be found to be less fascinating than the Kalakeya war in the first part.

Rating: 3.5 / 5.0
