My guess is that Sivagami killed Baahubali (accidentally) but Katappa takes the blame on her behalf. Remember when Sivagami talks about some mistake that she committed earlier?

Was it a mistake and Ballaladeva was the target ? Did the Rajmata Sivakami decide Amarendra was not fit to be king and wanted Ballaladeva to be king, so ordered Kattappa to do the dirty work while she tried to atone for her sins by saving the baby Mahendra. ?
