@Bold: See, that's the thing. Beauty is subjective. For you beauty lies in features. For some it may lie in skin colour. Who are we to judge. I'll just say live and let live!!

You can't quite compare skin color and height. Because skin color has been used to oppress millions of people in humankind's history, heck, us indians were oppressed and abused during british regime because of skin color and looked down upon. It would be just as despicable for us to look down on our own skin color and indulge in that bit of racism/colourism against our own darker skinned members of society. How can we live and let live if such oppression is present and especially felt by the darker skinned members of the society on a daily basis?

Though not discarding your opinion of what beauty is, but definitely discarding the notion that skin color represents beauty, that somehow having a certain skin color makes you beautiful and having another certain skin color automatically makes you ugly. That is a dangerous path to go down on, as history has repeatedly shown.

Even dark people want to look fairer during events, weddings & parties. Instead they should be happy with their skin tone. everybody wants to fit in and try to become fair.

I never said having a certain skin colour makes you beautiful. It is one of the factors for me. If someone is fair, it's good but they also got to have the features for them to truly stand out. There are quite a few fair people with not so great features and they look so plain jane. And there are several darker people who I find more beautiful than some fair people, like Priyanka I find more beautiful than Yami Gautam for example.

Indians were not oppressed because of skin color, they simply colonized us and of course the fact that most of us were dark/brown was used against us. But that's not the sole reason. And why not height! Short people are made fun of all the time. Ok, forget height. Why use makeup then? Why paint your cheeks and lips a different colour? Wouldn't it be demeaning to those who are born a certain way and don't use makeup?

Fact of the matter again lies in live and let live! Let people do whatever they think is right.

While I agree that the bias against dark skin is supremely demeaning but so is the bias against facial features. Huge nose, small eyes, small lips are seens as ugly features.
If skin color is something that we don't have any control over, so are our features. We don't choose our features. So that's also discrimination.
In short, the whole concept of a certain type of beauty is flawed. If you judge someone based on skin color or features, that's wrong.

And this +100.

Just goes to show how embedded in our Asian psyche fairness is and how important it appears to be. Even the people on this forum are divided on it.
It really is as Randeep Hooda said a hangover of the British colonialism where white was seen as successful and dark was considered inferior. That's about all I agree with in his statement though. The comment on how men SHOULD BE DARK and not fair is also racism.

Comparing the issues in colour to other aspects of beauty is ignorance as skin colour discrimination is the issue that led to the oppression of thousands if not millions of people for centuries.
