Rangoon gets a 'UA' certificate with just a few verbal cuts.
Bakchod' and bas***d' are two of the forbidden words that have been deleted from Vishal Bhardwaj's Rangoon before being granted a UA' certificate. Producer Sajid Nadiadwala and director Bhardwaj, coming together for the first time, can now breathe easy as they've sailed through the censor board with just a few verbal cuts. bas***d' has been replaced by Rascal', and Bakchod' with Bakchor'... whatever that means.
Interestingly, the word bas***d' is allowed by the Central Board of Film Certification, if used in the literal sense. In Karan Malhotra's Brothers, Siddharth Malhotra was allowed to be called bas***d' as he played Jackie Shroff's illegitimate son. However, Kangana Ranaut cannot be called a chinal'(which can be...errr... crudely translated as s**t') although it was okay for Vaani Kapoor to be called a s**t' in Befikre. In Rangoon, the derogatory term for a wanton woman has been asked to be replaced.Chinal' is replaced by jhoothi'(liar).
From a sternly sanskari approach to smooching in recent films like Imtiaz Ali's Tamasha and Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, to a liberal global attitude to PDA in Aditya Chopra's Befikre, has the censor board become more liberal?
When asked to comment on his historic endorsement of Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor's khullam-khulla smooching binge in Befikre, Nihalani candid said, "firstly, there is a difference in the intention and purpose of the kisses in Befikre and the ones you mention in the earlier films (Tamasha, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil). Those earlier kisses were very intimate and sexual in nature, and also shot in lingering close-ups. In Befikre the kisses are used as signs of affection warmth and kinship. And they are not shot in close-ups. That makes a helluva difference in terms of impact."
