This week will see the Kahaani franchise testing its brand value with Kahaani 2. We have seen what has happened to other so called franchises like Rock On, Force and Tum Bin recently but if we put all the stats together from theatrical and television then Kahaani comes out a better film than those films. But the problem is was Kahaani (2012) a good film that it can become a franchise as being better than the above films is pretty easy and not really the task. Its again one of those films which was applauded by the typical media types which can't be taken seriously to make a second installment though some have done and results are there to be seen.

The box office numbers were no doubt good in accordance to its budget but the footfalls did not go anywhere in the theatres and television after its theatrical run did not do well and the problem is you have to convert that limited audience to come again. In these terms the film was not good enough though West Bengal is probably a different story as the film got big footfalls comparing with other films of the time. The first film has reached a limited audience and you are only going to convert some of that limited audience to come again and top the cost is double and all these things make it tough. The theatrical of the film is fair, obviously holds limited appeal for the wider audience but sticks to the suspense genre which fans of Kahaani probably want but are there enough of these fans. The director made Kahaani but also has disasters like Aladin, Home Delivery and Jhankaar Beats so the track record is not that good.

It is again a test of what has been said about Kahaani and how good (? in reality) it was against the stats especially the reach being limited and to convert this limited reach again is hard and you have to stick to the stats which say its going to be a tough road ahead as the first film has limited fans so no initial. Public reports can save the film but whats the point of a franchise when it gives no boost and reports (if they come) have to save the day.
