Movie Review: Kahaani 2

Review by Bollywood Hungama News Network

Kahaanirew-1

This week sees the release of yet another film sequel at the Bollywood box office. This time round, it's the sequel of the 2012 whodunit film KAHAANI. Titled KAHAANI 2: DURGA RANI SINGH, it stars Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal in the lead roles. But will KAHAANI 2: DURGA RANI SINGH turn out to be a successful story' at the box-office, or will it turn turtle, let's analyze.

Boundscript Motion Pictures and Pen India Limited's KAHAANI 2: DURGA RANI SINGH is a whodunit thriller that traces a mother's journey in the life of her child, the importance of a child in a mother's life and vice versa. The film starts off with a day in the life of Vidya Sinha (Vidya Balan), which oscillates between her wheel chair ridden daughter Mini (Naisha Khanna/Tunisha Sharma) and her office (in that order). One day she returns home from her office to find her house empty and her darling daughter Mini missing. Soon after she receives an image of her daughter bound and gagged, along with a phone call from an unknown number stating that her daughter has been kidnapped and that she should reach a stipulated spot if she wants to save her daughter. A visibly distorted Mini wastes no time and rushes to the said spot. On the way, she meets with an untimely accident, which lands her in a coma. There enters the promotion hungry' police officer Sub-Inspector Inderjeet Singh (Arjun Rampal), who is the officer in charge of the case. While investigating, he gets hold of Vidya's personal diary (in which she has written about all the events involving her and Mini), which shakes his world completely. When Inderjeet Singh reaches the hospital to meet Vidya Sinha, he gets a shock of his life when he discovers that Vidya Sinha's face is an exact replica of a person he knew a long time ago named Durga Rani Singh. Unable to comprehend this, Inderjeet gets to work on the case to find out more whether the comatose accident victim is Vidyya Sinha or Durga Rani Singh. In the interim Inderjeet is informed by his superior officer that a dreaded killer and kidnapper Durga Rani Singh, was last spotted in their city. On his journey to uncover the truth Inderjeet discovers Vidya Sinha's diary that shocks him completely, what is the mystery prevailing between Vidya Sinha and Durga Rani Singh and does Vidya Sinha ultimately land up saving her daughter Mini is what forms the rest of the film.

The film's screenplay (Sujoy Ghosh) is definitely one of the most shocking that Bollywood has witnessed in the recent times. It keeps the user hooked right from the word go. The film's story (Sujoy Ghosh & Suresh Nair) is engaging, thrilling, intriguing and as novel as compared to its predecessor. The story has plenty of twists and turns that keep the audience engrossed throughout. It engages the audience essentially for two reasons - the element of thrill it brings to the table and the taboo subject it addresses. Amidst all this, it's the emotional quotient raised by Vidya Balan that forms the crux of the hard hitting film. The film's dialogues (Ritesh Shah & Sujoy Ghosh) are simple, yet stunning. Even though humour is missing in the film, its absence is not really felt in the otherwise serious drama.

After having produced the thriller TE3N (its Box-Office performance notwithstanding), director Sujoy Ghosh is back with what he best does: directing whodunit thrillers. After having directed KAHAANI, Sujoy Ghosh did face an uphill task of developing a story (with KAHAANI 2: DURGA RANI SINGH) that not just encompassed the essence of a thriller, but also featured enough plot twists to keep the viewers guessing. KAHAANI 2: DURGA RANI SINGH serves as a perfect answer to the same. Sujoy Ghosh deserves brownie points for having paid detailed attention to the fact that the sequel enjoys its own and distinguished identity under the sun. And he has taken every possible measure to do so and has been fairly successful in the same. Sujoy Ghosh needs to be applauded for keeping the film real and gripping, without having to resort to the typical Bollywood thriller route. While the film's first half successfully establishes the plot and the mystery, it's the second half that's a revelation (quite literally) of sorts. Despite the presence of a handful of dull moments in the second half, the film's pre-climax and climax makes up for everything. The film's prime plot comes as a bolt from the blue. Do not miss the scenes like the film's climax, Vidya Balan trying to unravel the mystery in her student's house, her physical fight with a lady cop and the pre-climax face to face encounter between Vidya Balan and the lady cop. Another must watch sequence is immediate post the interval, where unlike conventional films that usually resume a minute a two before the break, Sujoy come up with a unique way that recaps the highpoints from the first half before resuming.

Kahaanirew-2

As for the performances, the film rides totally on the shoulders of Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal (in that order). After having done the forgettable HAMARI ADHURI KAHANI, Vidya Balan has once again joined hands with Sujoy Ghosh, with whom she had delivered a hit in the form of KAHAANI. The supremacy of Vidya Balan's performance is so high that, it makes its predecessor KAHAANI look like a teaser of what to expect from its sequel. In the true sense of the word, Vidya Balan owns the film totally, so much so that, it's impossible to think of KAHAANI without her. Her performance is only next to being flawless. The movie gives Vidya Balan a perfect platform to display an array of her emotions. Be it the caring and concerned mother, the conniving lady or convict, Vidya Balan gets into the skin of her character effortlessly. The fact that she looks ugly and unkempt in most parts of the film did require a hell lot of courage. On the other hand, Arjun Rampal, whose last film ROCK ON 2 was a dud at the Box-Office, springs back with an unexpected surprise and a superior (yet restrained) performance. Keeping in mind his towering personality in real life, he essays the role of Sub Inspector Inderjeet Singh with utmost aplomb, conviction and confidence. Arjun Rampal, besides being excellent in his role, brings in a lot of compassion and smartness to his character. Despite the presence of stalwarts like Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal, the cute little child artist Naisha Khanna makes her presence felt in the film and how! Even though she was an integral part in the film's story, performances by Vidya Balan and Arjun Rampal could have easily overshadowed her. Full credits go to Sujoy Ghosh for not just giving Naisha Khanna her place under the sun, but also for having extracted a superlative performance out of the girl. Jugal Hansraj, who returns to the silver screen after a long time is a pleasure to watch. The rest of the actors (some of them totally brilliant) help the film move forward.

After having collaborated with Sujoy Ghosh in TE3N, music composer Clinton Cerejo has composed the music for KAHAANI 2: DURGA RANI SINGH. Even though a film of this genre need not necessarily need music to bank upon, still, the music is passable with no out of place and thrusted tracks. On the other hand, the background music is bang on and acts as one of the film's USPs. It simply adds to the aura of the haunting film.

The film's cinematography (Tapan Basu) is outstanding. The way in which he has shot the locations are extremely top-notch. The camerawork, along with the colour tone are superlatively shot. The film's editing (Namrata Rao) is outstanding. The film's timeline of around 2 hours works extremely in the favour of the film.

On the whole KAHAANI 2: DURGA RANI SINGH comes across as a dark thriller that addresses a sensitive subject backed with fantastic performances. At the Box Office, the movie will be appreciated on the account of its engaging narrative. Highly Recommended.

skimming through reviews to avoid spoilers...this one seems to have quite a few, but vidya 👏👏👏

SPOILERS

Kahaani 2 Movie Review: Vidya Balan's Captivating Act Makes This Story A Gripping Ride! Is Vidya Balan's Kahaani 2 worth all the hype? We watched it and here's our verdict!

Director: Sujoy Ghosh Producers: Sujoy Ghosh, Jayantilal Gada Writers: Sujoy Ghosh, Ritesh Shah (dialogues)

What's Yay: Impressive performances, taut screenplay, gripping first half
What's Nay: The predictable climax is a big let-down Popcorn Refill: Strictly interval The Iconic Moment: The scene where Durga Rani Singh discovers a shocking secret about the Deewan family, leading to Mini finally spilling the beans.

Plot: Kahaani 2 opens with a night scene in Chandan Nagar, West Bengal. Sujoy Ghosh wastes no time in giving us a glimpse of the daily lives of Vidya Sinha (Vidya Balan) and her paralysed daughter Mini which includes cleaning up the house and playing Ludo on a typical Sunday. Vidya is quite protective of Mini and wants to seek the best treatment for her in New York. However, one fine day, their small world turns upside down when Vidya returns home from office only to discover that Mini is missing. Minutes later, she receives a mysterious call and hurriedly rushes out to reach the given address. Unfortunately, she meets with an accident on her way which leaves her in coma. Inspector Inderjit Singh (Arjun Rampal) takes up this case and is shocked to recognize Vidya as Durga Rani Singh, a criminal wanted for kidnapping and murder. His further investigations lead him to Vidya/Durga's house where he stumbles upon a black diary holding a dark past that could help him in connecting the dots and take this story to its conclusion.

Direction: While the first Kahaani revolved around a pregnant lady in search of her missing husband, Sujoy's latest offering this time addresses a grave issue that's often brushed under the carpet. What's applaud-worthy is that the director handles the subject with sensitivity without resorting to any gruesome visuals. Yes, the film does feed upon some typical Bollywood staples but Sujoy with his neat story-telling leaves a lasting impression. This time, Bob Biswas and his 'Namaskar..ek minute' is replaced by a female harridan who brandishes her razor blade mouthing 'yeh safe hai' before striking her victim.

Acting: Vidya Balan gives a solid performance reminding you why she is one of the best performers in the industry. Be it fear, angst, anxiety or sorrow, the actress gets all her emotions spot on and shines in every frame. You so want to see more of her! Arjun Rampal holds his own identity and lends the story a whiff of humour amidst the building tension at several junctures. Jugal Hansraj is the surprise package here for one has never seen him in this avatar before. (Sorry, no spoilers here!) Naisha Khanna gives a superlative performance and her scenes with Vidya are heart-touching.

Other Technical Aspects: Kahaani 2 has one of the best first halves that keeps you glued to your seat with his water-tight screenplay and gripping narrative. You just don't get a moment to breath loose as you fear losing out some crucial details. However, post interval things start getting predictable and the guessing game comes to an end. The plot loses steam as you wait in anticipation for a surprise twist in the tale. Sadly, that moment never arrives and you are instead treated to a dull climax which totally lacks a punch. To put it in other words, it feels like being served some dal-chawal after a scrumptious plate of biryani! Had Sujoy focussed more on these points of disappointment, Kahaani 2 would have outrun its predecessor! Tapan Basu's cinematography captures West Bengal in a more subtle way as compared to what Kahaani had to offer. There is no Durga Pujo or colourful streets of Kolkata. Instead, Sujoy gives a glimpse of the city that's far more rooted. Namrata Rao's sharp editing makes the film more edgy and exciting.

Music: The film doesn't have any scoop for songs and Kahaani 2 neither boosts of some memorable tracks. The background music seams well with the narrative and adds more hues to the mood.

Verdict: Watch Kahaani 2 for Sujoy Ghosh's finesse for extracting some power-packed performances and making them stand out in the film. If you are in mood for some thrills, then Durga Rani Singh's world is the right place for you to step in!

Kahaani 2 Movie Review: Vidya's filmy ride isn't the thrill show you signed up for!

It's almost blasphemous to go wrong with Kahaani. For Pete's sake, the first installment is amongst the few Indian films that have inspired a Hollywood remake. It is a close shave for director Sujoy Ghosh, who gives Bollywood its most fantastic pre-interval sequence ever but wobbles thereafter. Of course, it ended up as a classic case of too good to be true. The curse of the second hour hits bad with a clunky half comprising gimmicky action sequences and a brooding cop who scurries around acting handsome in his khakhi wardi.

As expected, this time around the story isn't even a patch on the first. Since Sujoy and his aide Bidya...oops..Vidya... I want to say Bagchi...but, no...Balan...return after a phenomenal film, drawing parallels is inevitable. Yes, Vidya is in great form. She ain't Bidya Bagchi, a character that fit her like a glove, but Durga Rani Singh isn't too far away. It is a well-rounded performance that can't be faulted. As a why-dunit more than a whu-dunit, Sujoy begins on a sturdy note. Unfortunately, it too is a dark, delicious story with malicious undertones, everything fitting the blueprint of a true blue thriller.

Yes, the Bidya hangover continues even this time. Sujoy's heroine is introduced in a crackling scene as Vidya Sinha in a humble neighbourhood, living with her paralyzed daughter Mini. When the little one goes missing and the lady herself is fighting for life after an accident, the case falls in the hands of a cop named Inderjeet Singh. They figure Vidya's alias name is Durga Rani Singh who hides a murky past in the pages of her cluttered diary. Revelations stumble out of the closet and her past history with the cop returns to haunt everyone. Durga's bond with Mili is unspooled over a trail of scenes that involve a sticky duel with an uncle whose glib dialogues are haunting and a brooding grandmother who gives the creeps.

Since it's a thriller, there is little that can be divulged about the plot hereafter. By design, the story relies solely on the prowess of its leading lady. Vidya is expectedly in ace form, giving an assured performance. She beautifully brings out the trauma that she faced as a kid, trapped in an horrific situation with adults who could be sheer evil sans remorse. As she learns to adjust to the demands and prerequisites of a romantic relationship, her nervous energy garners sympathy.

But the story takes up a cliched route. After multiple films in recent time, be it Badlapur, Raman Raghav or more recently Sujoy's Te3n itself, there is an overkill to understand the dynamics of a sinner and saint. Perspective?

The narrative is absolutely rousing, nail biting and terrific in the first part. There isn't a second wasted in pulling the viewer into the drama. Kolkata's personality adds novelty to the plot though it is far less effective than it was in the case of Kahaani (After Piku, the love story has reached a beautiful crescendo, nay?). Sujoy is never lackadaisical in his apparoach but to be able to find an intriguing hook is always a pertinent challenge in a thriller. The obviousness was absolutely absent in Kahaani and this time the guess work ends pretty soon, even before the story has unraveled its big mystery. The suspense is hardly piercing when it is muttered screen which is often a thriller's biggest failure.

The mind games have gone obsolete. the actors are commendable - Jugal is worth a mention, Arjun is lightyears ahead of anything he has been seen in recent times but it pivots on Vidya, who shoulders it steadily. But the writing is loose, missing Sujoy's crisp narrative from last night. In between Kalimpong, Kolkata and Chandan Nagar, the answers are served in a platter. What's the point of a thriller if you have no questions to ask? Of course, the questions we ask are absolutely banal. Note to self-it's a thriller, you can't say much! Oh damn, let's put it as dubiously as possible - are co-incidences so smooth always or just in our movies? Rhetoric reply, of course but don't let anything hold you back from giving this movie shot. Thats's something Sujoy and his Bidya command by virtue of the last movie and partly this. If there's a third, we pray, it's less filmy than this.

We rate the film a 60% on the Pinkvilla Movie Meter.

Kahaani 2' Movie Review: Sujoy Ghosh's Bold Thriller With Superlative Performances by Vidya Balan And Arjun Rampal Will Keep You On The Edge Of Your Seat!

  • 01-Dec-2016

  • Jaivardhan Chaudhary

Star Cast: Vidya Balan, Arjun Rampal, Naisha Khanna, Manini Chadha, Jugal Hansraj, Tota Roy Choudhury and Kharaj Mukherjee

Director: Sujoy Ghosh

Producer: Sujoy Ghosh and Jayantilal Gada

Claps For: Direction, Performances, Thrills and Background Score

Slaps For: Dull Climax after a wonderful build up will turn you off

What's New: A bold take on sexual abuse of children!

Popcorn Refill: Interval

Plot: Vidya Sinha lives in Chandan Nagar with her paralyzed daughter Mini. One night, she returns back home to find that her daughter has been kidnapped. A call by the kidnapper sends her running on the streets only to meet with an accident.
Handling her case is Inspector Inderjit Singh, who believes that she is not Vidya Sinha but a certain Durga Rani Singh. Things take a turn when Singh finds out that the woman, who is in temporary coma, has been accused of kidnapping and murder; even though her diary has a completely different Kahaani' to tell...

Performances: It's amazing to see how effortlessly Vidya Balan portrays the shy and silent Durga Rani Singh who loves keeping to herself, and soon changes her colors to the possessive mother who can go to any extent to protect her daughter. There's fear, anxiety and madness in her eyes. With Kahaani 2', she proves why she deserves to be called the Fourth Khan of Bollywood!

Arjun Rampal is a complete delight to watch. He essays the role of a cop with complete simplicity and sincerity, and gives Inderjit Singh his own identity. No matter what your reasons are to watch the movie, you will come saying that Rampal was the surprise package of Kahaani 2'. However, his character could have been better-sketched.

It's nice to have Jugal Hansraj on the big screen after such a long gap. The actor does complete justice to his character.

Tota Roy Choudhury amazes in the little role he's got. Kharaj Mukherjee provides the much-needed comic relief.

Manini Chadha looks gorgeous and has done a good job! Naisha Khanna is impressive.

About The Movie: First thing first - Kahaani 2' is not a continuation of Kahaani'. It is a completely different movie.

Sujoy Ghosh and his team touch upon the topic of sexual abuse of children in a very aggressive manner- something which commercial Bollywood movies usually restrain from getting into, and leave it to the "Art" or Kashyap brand of cinema to handle and showcase on the screens. Kudos!

The first half is purely brilliant in terms of the thrills, the direction and a few wonderful shots. Each and every scene contributes in brilliantly building up the suspense of the movie that will leave you in anticipation. But then comes the second half and the graph of the movie falls down since it gets easy to predict a few things...

You'd expect the climax to have a jaw-dropping revealer that will leave you stunned just the way Kahaani' did. But instead of biting your nails, you would be left wondering as to why did Sujoy make it seem so complicated when the final twist is so dull? Probably they could have gone for a better or powerful ending.

Yes, that's the problem with Kahaani 2'. After two hours keeping the audiences on the edge-of-their-seats, they present us with a climax which just wasn't worth all the build-up. In fact, you would have preferred becoming a fool once again by getting trapped into a fake story by the protagonist!

It hurts when a wonderfully made film ends on a dull and uninteresting note rather than giving you goosebumps. If you are an ardent fan of suspense-thrillers, then the climax of the film will turn you off after 2 hours of sheer amazement. Sujoy Ghosh - the Director wins, but Sujoy Ghosh - the Storywriter loses the race. And unlike Kahaani', this' one's just a one-time watch!

The editing is crisp, and the background score is super amazing!

Combo-On-Offer: Suspense + Thriller + Drama

Verdict: Yes, the climax disappoints. But the apart from those final 10 minutes, Kahaani 2' is a roller-coaster ride that will keep you on the edge-of-your seats. And the credit for that goes to terrific direction and superlative performances by all! Hence, we give the sequel of Kahaani' CLAPS!

KAHAANI 2 MOVIE REVIEW: THIS VIDYA BALAN FILM IS WATCHABLE, BUT NOT ENTIRELY SATISFYING

By Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror | Dec 2, 2016, 08.00 AM IST
Critic's Rating: 3/5
Avg Readers' Rating: 3/5
CAST:Vidya Balan, Arjun Rampal
DIRECTION:Sujoy Ghosh
GENRE:Thriller
To be the second instalment of a successful film is much like being born to a superstar " comparisons are inevitable. And while Kahaani leant on uncertainty, this one fails to hold on to its big reveal. That said, Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh is far less disappointing than many second-gen actors and the first half has you curious if not concerned about the chain of events that play out on the screen. An alternative end and a strategically-inserted kahaani mein twist and this could've been the tightest thriller of the year. But then that would've been an entirely different film.

When a doting mother realises that her invalid daughter has gone missing, she goes hysterical. Her worst fears are realised when she receives a call from her daughter's abductor. Tearing through the dusty lanes of Chandannagar, a small town in West Bengal, Vidya Sinha's (Vidya Balan) quest to locate her daughter Minnie lasts for seconds " before she's bumped off by a speeding car. Rushed to a government hospital, she endures "traumatic brain injury". When sub-inspector Inderjeet Singh (Arjun Rampal) lands up to investigate, his engagement with the case seems blatantly suspicious. A visit to the victim's house reveals that she had acquired a fake identity. Her diary also apprises Inderjeet of the trying life that she and Minnie had survived. As Vidya's condition sinks, she has a mysterious visitor at the hospital who jabs a syringe into her wrist. As scope for her recovery seems bleak, Inderjeet strives to get to the bottom of the affair, with or without her assistance. So, will Vidya ever be united with her daughter? Will Inderjeet detect what drove Vidya to adopt an alias? These questions are best unanswered to keep spoilers at bay.

Vidya Balan lugging her protruding tummy through the streets of Kolkata, in search of her missing husband, was a great ruse to conceal Kahaani's dark story. But here, murky mayhem forms the surface with barely any hidden motives beneath. As an actress, Balan is committed and packs a determined desperation in her character. But if this film must be credited for one revelation, it has to be the discovery of Arjun Rampal, the actor. Rampal proves that he can actually construct an expression or three to convey emotion. But given the number of years he's spent in honing the craft, it's only about time. It may not bag him a guest lecture at an acting school, but it's surely his best ever. Jugal Hansraj's extended guest appearance has him essaying a character who is a sharp contrast to every other he has played in the past. But this risky stint pays off as he's largely convincing and channels evil with a dash of eccentric.

Director Sujoy Ghosh, who raised Hindi thrillers to the extent of art with Kahaani, gets a few things right but eventually gives in to the tropes. His visual narration of the flashback sequence is deliciously dark and suitably gripping. But once he's done joining the dots, he rushes to fold up the proceedings; consequently attributing little thought to how it could be best visualised and conceived.

This one lacks jolts, ability to go beyond the obvious and offers a denouement that is not exactly satisfying. But it's watchable because it holds your attention throughout and keeps you hopeful about an unannounced turn of events that may spring out of thin air any moment. Sadly, it doesn't.
