I think what happens is you give the power to other individuals to influence over your emotions so strongly so once they say something it sets you off and you try to fill the void elsewhere. You corner yourself and think the walls are closing on you so you end up victimising yourself and in that progress you lose out on your individuality and what makes you unique. The best way to counter this is to step back, get some fresh air and not take the internet so seriously. If you let people trivial comments shake you up then you are doing it wrong.
