Amitabh is a highly superstitious person, which i guess was proved at Abhi -Ash marriage time when Ash was married to a tree .. anyways, he was alsmot ready to marry Rekha. He really was! but his pandits told him that Rekha would only bring bad luck for him and it was around that time when Coolie accident happened, and his belief affirmed.
