Thanks for making this wonderful post Mini

Hrishi da made wonderful movies. They were commercially successful too.Today's movie makers should learn from him. His movies were not made on large scale, had no grandeur , still touched everyone's heart.
Script was hero of his movies. Clean family entertainment .

One of the greatest, always made topical, relevant, social films that captured middle class India, its values, emotions and aspirations. Raju Hirani is following in his footstep and is super successful.

I always felt Priyadarshan tried to emulate him. Raju Hirani too, like you said, but I find Hirani a tad too manipulative... he tries to emotional manipulate his audience and that's where he loses me... he doesn't depict that sincerity or unassuming, unbiased amusement towards life and it's situations like Hrishikesh Mukherjee does. IDK why, I always felt that😆

Hit numbers from Hrishida films

He may have been associated with comedies but possessed a keen musical sense as well. Presenting popular numbers from Hrishikesh Mukherjee films on his death anniversary

1) Sab kuch seekha hamne

Film : Anari (1959)
Music: Shankar-Jaikishan
Singer: Mukesh

The song illustrates the shortcomings of an honest, hardworking man " that he has learnt all but not what's deemed necessary to get by in the world " a certain amount of cunning. Hrishida was a socialist and a humanitarian at heart and the song symbolises where his own leanings lay.

2) Tera mera pyar amar

Film : Asli Naqli (1962)
Music : Shankar-Jaikishan
Singer : Lata Mangeshkar

It's one of those rare Dev Anand starrers whose music is given by S-J. It's a typical rich boy meets poor girl romance and the song highlights Sadhana's insecurities. It's a soft, pathos-filled number by Lata which hasn't lost its allure over the years.

3) Ya dil ki suno

Film : Anupama (1966)
Music : Hemant Kumar
Singer : Hemant Kumar

It's one of those songs which goes straight to your heart and makes a home there. Hemant Kumar superbly brings out Dharmendra's angst and made it an anthem for all lovers struggling with the pain of love

4) Railgadi

Fikm: Aashirwad (1968)
Music : Vasant Desai
Singer : Ashok Kumar

This Gulzar song, full of nonsensical rhymes, is one of the best children's songs ever made and Ashok Kumar, the lead actor sang or rather rapped it with the frenzy as well as the fun it deserved.

5) Zindagi kaisi yeh paheli hai

Film : Anand (1971)
Music : Salil Chaudhary
Singer : Manna Dey

Anand is arguably Hrishida's finest film. It's protagonist suffers from cancer and yet teaches those around him how to lead their lives more vibrantly. The present song touches upon the see-saw nature of life and comments that nothing is constant.

6) Tere mere milan ki yeh raina

Film : Abhimaan (1973)
Music : SD Burman
Singers : Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar

The film was about how ego mars a relationship and this was the sort of a redemption song where the protagonists realise their mistake and reconcile their differences. It was tragedy that brings them together and both Kishore and Lata caught the mood superbly.

7) Aaye tum yaad mujhe

Film : Mili (1975)
Music : SD Burman
Singer: Kishore Kumar

Love is often times lonely and this song captures the feeling superbly. It has an underlying tenderness beneath the sad notes and gets to you.

8) Ab ke sajan saawan mein

Film : Chupke Chupke (1975)
Music : SD Burman
Singer : Lata Mangeshkar

The film is a giant prank played by Dharmendra on his brother-in-law and this situational song, where Sharmila Tagore sings about longing and separation while her husband, dressed as a chauffeur, listens from behind a drawn curtain.

9) Aanewala pal

Film : Gol Maal (1979)
Music : RD Burman
Singer : Kishore Kumar

Life is but a blink between birth and death is a philosophy found in most Hrishida films and this song heartily captured that spirit .

10) Sun sun sun didi tere liye

Film : Khoobsurat (1980)
Music : RD Burman
Singer : Asha Bhosle

It's usually the younger sister in middle class households who gets more excited when a prospective groom is found for her elder sister. Hrishida knew that and visualised a song that was appropriate for the occasion.

Jeena Isi ka naam hai,

Kahin door jab din dhal jaaye,

Teri Bindiya re,

Tum bin jeevan/More naina,
(hell! Bawarchi songs missing altogether :O)

Diye Jalte hai,

Golmaal title song😆

Many more are missing...

More than Zindagi kaisi yeh Paheli... Kahin door and Maine tere liye were more famous and (IMO) more melodious...
