Aamir Khan was to play KM Nanavati

Aamir Khan dropped idea after 'Rustom' and 'Love Affair' were announced

Now it can be told. Aamir Khan was secretly working on his own film based on the infamous KM Nanavati case, which serves as the basis of this month's blockbuster Rustom. Sources say, Aamir had conducted extensive research into the case, and had even got Sylvia, Nanavati's widow, on board. But then, the project fell apart when two other films based on the same case, were announced.

A reliable source informs, "Aamir was very eager to do a film on the case. He was collaborating with director Ram Madhvani on the same. After the director helmed the true-life account in Neerja effectively, Aamir felt Madhvani was the best filmmaker to piece together the intricate jigsaw pieces of the real-life Nanavati case."

Apparently, Aamir and Ram even met Sylvia, who now resides in London. "Yes, they met Mrs Nanavati. And she was enthusiastic about the project. After all, Aamir, who is known to be a superstar with a conscience, was doing it," says the source. But then it all fell apart when producer Neeraj Pandey in collaboration with Akshay Kumar announced Rustom based on the Nanavati case. Pooja Bhatt and Soni Razdan also announced Love Affair, based on the same project.

Adds the insider, "Some of us, who were researching for the project, are disheartened after seeing Rustom. It has very little to do with the case. The tone of our film was going to be totally different. It's one of the most important cases of our times and deserved to be brought to celluloid with some responsibility."

The project has now been put on ice. That's unfortunate because it would have been interesting to see Aamir's take on this complex saga of love, betrayal and honour.

Akshay and Neeraj Pandey announced Rustom as year ago and it was well known that it would be based on Nanavati case..
Neerja released this year so basically Aamir finalised Ram Madhvani well after knowning that Rustom was being made on the same

now that rustom is fairly succesful, he comes out with how he missed out on the opportunity

😆...

it's an old article which is now posted in IF...

this news was there before the release of the film...

Before Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan was offered movie similar to 'Rustom'?

Akshay Kumar is all set to bring the real-life story of Nanavati murder case on celluloid, but reports suggest that Aamir Khan too was offered to do a movie on a similar story-line by a different director earlier.

"Neerja" director Ram Madhvani had a well-researched script on a storyline like "Rustom" and had asked Aamir to play the lead in his film, according to SpotboyE. However, the "Dangal" actor had put the offer on hold for quite a long time and the film never saw the light of the day, the report added.

The movie "Rustom" is inspired by the 1959 Nanavanti murder case, in which, Naval Commander KM Nanavati had shot dead his wife's alleged paramour, Prem Ahuja. In other news, Pooja Bhatt is also working on a film titled "Love Affair" that is based on the same subject. However, Pooja had said that "Love Affair" is a sensual drama, showcasing the woman's perspective in the incident.

"We are definitely making "Love Affair." I am happy that "Rustom" is coming before us. It will help me to prepare for our film. Let 10 "Rustoms" be made. Ours is an erotic, sensual drama and very human, and from a woman's perspective. It is not just about the Nanavati case," DNA had quoted Pooja as saying earlier.

The trailer of "Rustom" was released some time back and it had received positive response from the audience. Directed by Tinu Suresh Desai, "Rustom" is one of the most awaited flicks of this year and features Ileana D'Cruz alongside Akshay among others. The film is slated to be released on Aug. 12.

On the other side, Aamir will next be seen in another much anticipated movie "Dangal." It is a biopic on Indian wrestler Mahaveer Phogat. Aamir plays the lead role. "Dangal" will hit the screens on Dec. 23.
