no he wasnt and I had the same question.

I read the real case and its was a plain case of murder with nothing patriotic about it. He killed his wife's lover forgiving his wife, was acquitted and moved to canada lived a long hearty life with wife and 3 kids and passed away at an old age.

one thing significant was that this was the last case judged by a jury .

Forgiving his wife was considered mahaanta in that era.. added to his aura..he could have even forgiven his friend..but kya kare? Thats why the story never appealed to me..

It helped that his wife is extremely beautiful..even now
