Sush and Ash were both in the Miss India contest the same year.
And as all know Sushmita was chosen to be Miss India and Ash was a runner-up that year.
Sush being the winner was sent to Miss Universe contest and won the Miss Universe title too and Ash being runner-up was sent to Miss World contest and won the Miss World title.
So, the judges have already chosen Sush over Ash in a beauty contest (Miss India) that ofcourse tests brains too.

As other people have said above, Beauty contests arent just about looks but brains too

Well, when Sush and Ash partcipated in the beauty pagent of 1994, Ash was unofficially crowned the beauty queen even before the first round was over. People were bowled over by her beauty charm and grace and no one knew thatSushmita Sen even existed.

But Sush held her ground in each and every round against the drop dead gorgeous Ash. It startled everyone, as Sush was not even a conventional beauty. But no one had ever heard or seen a more articulated and so refreshingly pretty girl, especially a girl who is 5 ft 10....it's not easy to be a very thin girl and have that kind of height and carry it off...Sush did.

In the finals, Ash and Sush tied at the top place with same points.

So for the first time in the Miss India pagent history, a re evaluation was done, and both were asked to do something extra ( I don't remember what exactly).

Sushmita won resoundingly. Rest as they say is history.

I watched that Miss Universe live. Sushmita was not even mentioned once by the compares who could not stop gushing how pretty Miss America was and how stunning Miss Venezuela was. And yet it was Sush who kept scoring in her 9s and 10s. When she won, it was a shock, and yet no one could utter a word because she had been so consistent. Her answer to the final question to her will remail etched in the mind of whoever heard it that day....

In Miss World on the other hand, every one else paled in front of Aishwarya, and from the start it was clear she would win, and she did.

That is why it is even more amazing that Sushmita won against Aish. Interestingly, Sushmita's competitors in Miss Universe were more tough than Aishwarya and she still won.

I would bet that even today, if it came into a contest between the two of them, Sushmita would still win.Simply because she has a better personality and comes across as a strong woman.
