Very disappointing movie. The court case is treated like a joke. The coyrtroom scenes r among the funniest of the movie.

Its an unintentional comedy movie.

Mohenjo Daro And Rustom Day One Early Estimates

The big clash between Mohenjo Daro and Rustom has turned out to be a bit of a let down as Rustom has runaway with the better first day collections. Rustom will gross around 14 crore nett as per early estimates while Mohenjo Daro will be around 8.50 crore nett as per early estimates. The combined figure is around 22-23 crore nett which is the sort figure that would have been expected before release but instead of sharing pot the battle has gone the way of the Akshay Kumar starrer which has notched up good collections at multiplexes while single screens are at a similar level and neither film has really performed at single screens.

It will be tough for Mohenjo Daro to recover from this as its a costly film at well over 100 crore and at that cost its tough without an initial. The film has performed better in South India and it will lead in Nizam / Andhra, Tamil Nadu / Kerala and possibly in a couple of the East India circuits but thats just not good enough. Rustom has done very well at multiplexes and is even doubling the Mohenjo Daro collections in some cities and looks set for a big four day weekend as multiplexes may grow on Saturday but even if the maintain at these levels it will be good enough.

So RUSTOM isn't a bad movie. But the problem is that it's not a great one either. I was expecting more from the movie but it turned out to be a one-time timepass movie and could have been a really interesting take on the controversial Nanavati case. Frankly, like Masand mentions, Rustom is really an opportunity wasted.

The first half takes WAY too long to set up the story, and the back story of how Arjan Bajwa and Ileana D'Cruz started their affair was mostly ineffective. The first half is bearable more because of the music, especially Tay Hai and Tere Sang Yaara. The second half is comparatively better than the first half, once the extra subplot is introduced (involving the navy and government), and once one realises the courtroom drama isn't to be taken seriously (explained later). The extra sub-plot is interesting but the execution could have been better. It ties the case together at the end so I walked away feeling a little satisfied with the second half.

As far as performances go, Akshay carries the movie completely on his shoulders, and does a great job as the serious Commander. Pawan Malhotra as the inspector is good. Arjan has a small role but was ok, role was definitely a pretty cheesy villain. The girls were not great, Ileana was either crying or looking glam/pretty while Esha kept on pouting and making faces / shrugging 😳. The maid and newspaper owner were adequate as well.

Rustom's main problem is the super melodramatic tone of the movie. I saw glimpses in the trailer and was hoping it would be better than what was shown, but it just started making everything unintentionally hilarious - from the super-cheesy background score to the music they played whenever Arjan Bajwa leered at Ileana, to the courtroom scenes in which:

- the judge looks like he is trying to control his laughter and is super sassy😕

- the prosecutor is super passive-aggressive and shrill

- the judge himself reads the headline of the newspaper and tells the jury to ignore what they read in the paper

-the way Rustom was representing himself and making mistakes and the judge letting it go was amusing at first, but just becomes annoying later.

Went for 7 pm show and followed that by rustom at 11.30... Jus back home ar 3.30 am now... My review below for both... Very honest and from neutral perspective

mohenjodaro has entertaining first half and gets tad slow towards intermission... Leaves us with the exciting arena that's about to follow after interval... Post interval, secret unfolds and den arena happens... Arena was jus awesome... It was more than awesome actually... Then comes da destruction of maham and followed by climax... 2nd half is very tightly scripted and very engaging... I loved the film overall and so did the audience in chennai... Walked out very satisfied... My rating 4/5

Walked in with good expectation... Movie gets to the point straight... Akki returns home in first 20 mins and finds out the reality... Killing followed by police investigation with several ppl and flashbacks...pre interval dialogue is nice: if i lose, I won't xxx... Then comes second half and was disappointed with the turn out of events... Court room drama was filled with comedy rather than thriller... Maid, press guy comedy, judges support towards akki and the comedy scenes between judge and prosecutor took intriguing and thrilling factor out... End was little stretched and no way comparable to special 26 or baby... There was no thrill but only comedy...

Akshay Kumar's Rustom has exceeded expectations on its opening day at the box office. The film was running at more than double the occupancy of Mohenjo Daro at multiplexes. The first day collections of the film could touch the 15 crore mark, when the final collections come in.

It was a clever marketing strategy that has resulted in an excellent opening day for Rustom. In comparison, Special 26 collected Rs 5.92 crore (clash with ABCD), Baby collected 9.30 crore and Airlift collected Rs 12.35 crore. Rustom managed a better opening than all those films, inspite of facing competition from a big film like Mohenjo Daro.

When one big film releases, the audience has two choices - either to watch the film or not watch it. When there are two big movies, it becomes a weekend that's not to be missed and the choice comes down to one film or the other. It's this exact scenario that the makers of Rustom cashed in on and the decision to go ahead with the clash probably came after the poor response to the theatrical trailer of Mohenjo Daro.

The success of Bajirao Mastani last year and Rustom this year, will soon makes clashes a norm in the industry. As soon as a film or a star begins to appear weak or there are internal reports that a big film hasn't shaped up as well as it was expected to, there is likely to be another film announcement for the same day.
