Mohenjo Daro Hit or Flop: Business Economics

2 min read

Hrithik Roshan's Mohenjo Daro was touted as one of the biggest films of 2016, but the end result has come as a shocker, as the film could well be the biggest loser of the year when it comes to the amount of money the investors will lose on the Ashutosh Gowarikar film.

The satellite rights were said to be pre-sold' for 45 crore, but the way the film has performed, the amount could be re-negotiated as there is always a box office performance clause for such big deals.

Mohenjo Daro Business Economics breakdown:

  • Total Investment: 124 crore (cost of production 108 crore + P&A 16 crore)
  • Satellite rights: 45 crore (will be re-negotiated)
  • Music and digital rights: 13 crore
  • To be recovered from domestic and overseas: 66 crore

Out of the Rs 66 crore that the film had to recover through theatrical business, Mohenjo Daro's share from the overseas business will be around 10-11 crore. Domestic (India) share will be under 30 crore. So the film has recovered 41 crore through theatrical business.

UTV Motion Pictures and Ashutosh Gowarikar will lose around 25-30 crore of their investment. When the losses from the satellite rights is factored in, it could even cross the 40 crore mark.

Approximate figures of how much Mohenjo Daro had to collect in India for various verdicts

  • Under 60 crore: Disaster
  • Under 90 crore: Flop
  • Break even 120 crore: Semi Hit
  • Above 130 crore: HIT
  • Above 180 crore: Super Hit
  • Above 250 crore: Blockbuster

When a film hasn't even collected half of its investment from domestic theatrical business, the verdict cannot be anything other than a disaster'.

Mohenjo Daro Verdict - Disaster

Watched the movie last Friday in an empty hall at nearest multiplex. I was the only audience. Felt like I was watching in my living room, on a giant screen with blasting speakers.

Movie has been the victim of negative propaganda from the start and that affected it in a big way.

Mohenjodaro is IN NO WAY as Bad or Horrible as it was projected to be...

I am a History Buff and I wasnt disappointed, thats all I can say. I give it a 3.5 out of 5.

HR was excellent. People saying he used his KMG voice were lying. He sustained his tight performance thru out the movie.
Pooja was cute, looked pretty and innocent. She didnt have much emoting to do except in the crying scene at her father's funeral and her acting was at par with any other BW newbie, lacking but not atrocious!
Kabir Bedi's leather face was disconcerting, Arunoday Siingh looked rather vulgar.

Lets start at the beginning.
HR's intro at the river was impressive. The croc scene was thrilling and well executed.
The fake crocodile didnt look as fake as people claimed. It looked as genuine as the crocs in Crocodile Dundee or shark in Jaws. But of course people wont dare to say anything abt fake props in HW movies, only bash them in desi movies.

It was good to see Sri Krishna of BR Chopra's Mahabharat as Sarman's uncle Durjan.
The switch to regular language from an imaginary Indus Valley language was done rather cleverly, with the village headman suddenly switching to rustic Hindi from the supposed IVC dialect.
Since IVC script and language has not been deciphered yet, that was a good idea.

The sets, the city of MJ, the buildings, marketplace, everything was perfectly recreated just as we had imagined them from reading history books.
The bustling markteplace with Egyptian, Sumerian, Tajik, and other foreign traders all trading in barter system, all this looked fascinating onscreen.

The story was typical, hero arrives in city, finds out tyrant and his son are exploiting the farmers, takes a stand against them, falls for the priest's daughter who is promised to the tyrant's villainish son, hero discovers tyrant had killed his father so he takes revenge with the help of his friends.

Sarman's friends names are funny, Hojo and Lothar, both inspired by Mandrake comics...Mandrake the Magician's cook's name was Hojo and his best friend was Lothar. 😆

People complaining abt nothing new in storyline shd realize that the same themes are repeated in history, greed for power, tyranny, exploitation, revolt and ultimately freedom and victory of good over Evil...the same theme is repeated over generations in stories, real life events, epics.

In fact, this film reminded me of old Hollywood classics like Ten Commandments, Benhur...historicals or biblical magnum opus, made on a grand scale with age old stories of tyranny, opression and final liberation.

The climactic scenes of the flooding river could have been better in terms of VFX but the idea of tying the boats to form a bridge and save all citizens of MJ was remarkable!

Only things I didnt like in the movie were the songs, especially Mohenjodaro song was too long and not very melodious, ARR has really lost his touch.

Also didnt like the final scene where they arrive at a river, Sarman names it Ganga. How come they walked so far from Sindhu river to ganga? 😲That was really absurd.

But overall, the film was a great 2 1/2 hours of spectacle, grandeur, recreation of an ancient civilization,as interpreted and visualized by Gowarikar.

Watched it. Spoilers ahead
Really wanted to like it. But it's very bad. Don't know why they named it after MJ Coz there isn't anything except aerial shots of town.
VFX is bad, no story, HR is looking very bad with those highlights .
Dances are cartoonish . Chand raat dance and steps are mockery .
Pooja's split legs dresses, a swimming pool side setting - everything is mockery of ancient civilization.
I won't mind anything if the story was captivating. But it's caricaturish.
Very disappointed with AG.
HR tried his best. But if he has no backup, what can he do alone.
AG needs to stop making movies.
Only part worth watching is last part when HR makes bridge of boats

I found fascinating the range of opinions about this movie. I watched it, and told myself "let it sink in" (pun intended!)

In essence, Mohenjo Daro retells a story we all know. The story of goodness versus egoism: the root of all human struggles. It's as simple as that, and there lies its value. It happens every day in many ways. It can take form in the choice of being kind vs being rude. Or choosing diplomacy over bombing a country.

Now back to MD. Hrithik...compelling portrayal of Sarman. Of course he gave his 200%. Pooja did a good effort. For those used to Kareenas or Emilia Clarkes, she may appear "emotionless" but IMO, Pooja is emotionally subtle. That can become her acting signature, her forte. She "talks with her eyes". I would recommend her to watch Audrey Tautou and Carey Mulligan films and interviews. Overall, I found Chaani sweet and a breath of fresh air.

When it comes to visuals, lots of interesting things: costumes, architecture, utensils, etc.I liked Sarman's turquoise shirt and the maroon turban. The indigo blue also suits him. VFX could have been a bit better but I couldn't care less. I'm not nit-picky with technical aspects. For me, the concept goes first. E.g. the climax scene with the boats was amazing, I haven't seen that kind of creativity in many time.

The soundtrack was great. Different to what we westerners are used to. Nice tribal beats in Mohenjo Mohenjo, and Tu Hai s film version is even more beautiful. Oh, the looks they gave to each other through the film! I missed Sarsariya though. Hope they include it in the DVD/ director's cut.

Finally, I liked the message behind the story, because it's real. As Pallavi has noted, these themes repeat in our history. And MD gets to the point: powerful people use fear to perpetuate oppresion. When you see it represented in the big screen, some may call it cliche, but the message is true. Maham making them buy swords to fight each other... and that prevails today. Nowadays there are no swords but guns and beheadings. In MD, Sarman points out the injustice. He voices the voiceless, and embodies the sense of brotherhood in everyone of us,

I had to look up the Ganga river reference. Maybe it would have felt more significant if I was an indian. You know, this a-new-beginning thing is always nice :-)

MD has a place in my heart. Thanks to all the team.

👏

coming back to Mohenjodaro. i really enjoyed the movie, you can barely point out one scene where Hrithik was off or his acting not up to par. brilliant and flawless

action scenes, def one of the BEST bollywood have seen. Hrithik physique and body language makes those stunts look graceful and believable.

loved the costume and sets. Ashu did a wonderful job there.

weakest point was def the screenplay, movie could have been chopped off by 10-15 minutes.
storywise there was nothing new.
pooja hegde was adequate in whatever little was given to her.
i liked Srujan and Durjan acting

HR was Brilliant in the climax, the boat bridge idea was wonderfully presented.

Kabir bedi, i didnt like.
VFX were just meh,

overall, i really enjoyed a peek into ashus vision of Indus Valley Civilization. the way he presented that barter/trade aspect of MD was brilliant.
i guess audience these days is too used to ghagra, cholis and fancy glass chandeliers in historicals to appreciate the raw and earthy vision of MD..

yes, there was flaws in the movie, i feel the critics and audience have been unnecessarily harsh with it. also the fact of the MD promotional team have been VERY VERY thanda, add to it the aggressive promotion of rustom and their PR making it seem like rustom is some master piece while the critics have not exactly been too fond of it...

i feel history wont be as harsh with MD, and might even appreciate it in future. but for now damage has been done.

Hr gave two years of this life to this project. suffered several injuries while performing stunts for this movie.

i hope Hrithik really takes sometime to sit back and reevaluate and try to pin point the pulse of audience. He is a powerful performer AND entertainer. gonna take more than just one flop to end his career.

i think, Hrithik does so few movies, and also hes is not in public eye on regular basis (on tv shows like salman, akki and aamir etc do) and is so selective about his projects that when the time comes, people have insanely high expectations from his movies. anything less than brilliant is not accepted by them.

best of luck to Hrithik and Ashu.👍🏼

may their future endeavors prove to be more fruitful.
