Technical aspects of film making.

This also a member related post...😆 Since those are the new rage in the forum😆

J/K ing... The only thing member related I wanna ask is:

Is anyone here who has done course in technical aspects of film making? Editing, Cinematography, Art Direction etc etc? If yes, then maybe, you guys can shed a light on my questions.

One of the reasons I think technicians don't get their due recognition is that there are hardly few people who dwell into those aspects of film making, discuss or acknowledge them. Of course, for common man it's just the look and feel of the film that's all matters, but people here on portals like this or online who passionately discuss cinema even them I hardly notice going beyond directors, editors or cinematographers.

Even reputed critics, I keep looking for them to shed more light on technicalities but they hardly do it. They give off the vibes that they are knowledgeble about them but have hardly seen them go beyond 'choppy editing', 'stunningly captured cinematography' and the likes. Why don't they go deeper and educate us common folks on MORE than just the usual opinions?😕

I don't say let us do a Ph.D on it... but a lot goes into getting that perfect shot right in your favourite film or scene. Don't you want to know what made it possible?

I hear many new actors talking about how they don't know anything about cameras n angles n learnt that on job and they say it's quite difficult job behind the scenes... So what exactly goes into getting a shot?

What you as viewer found was something good but some technical glitch messed it up? ( like, for me with my limited knowledge, The Rite was nice film but the lighting, camera work failed!)

And who knows about all the Master shots, close ups and other interesting technical stuff? I really wanna know ... I just only know bits about lighting effects, what master n close up shots are...

I keep hearing film makers talking about ' pre-production' what exactly goes into it? Laying down sets n art direction? Or more?

What are the most common type of shots called? There are lot of types n names... I heard some long, medium, springboard... And they even have their own strange filmi lingo for certain things like 'Martini shot' means last shot of the day or 'cookie' means something used to make light patterns in the background😆😆

And above all, we critique BW a lot... how far technically accomplished most technicians are? Are we having BAD directors failing whole technical crew? Our Sci-Fi is proof of our limitations in a way but how good/bad is Indian Film industry in this aspect over all?

I might be a boring topic to most of you, but I'm genuinely interested to know more about what goes on behind the scenes ... that's not about just between people😆

Maybe you should start with Short films... learn it on job.😆

But I think, behind the lens is not like before the lens. Many claim to have gone to drama schools but are pathetic actors... but they get away with it. I don't think you can bluff like that when you are handling a job like direction or sound mixing or something technical... So you need your degree and effort.

And Director is captain of the ship. Ram Madhvani made Sonam act decent in Neerja... he played her strengths n covered her flaws... imagine the work that might've gone behind the scenes for that😆 (sorry if you are a Sonam fan😆). So you might as well take the full course in direction😆
