An excerpt of my corkscrew adventure
During our stay I had purchased a corkscrew to open our wine. It was a simple cheap no frills Walgreen's corkscrew. I checked the TSA approved carry on items list before packing my bag. Since the corkscrew was approved, I packed it. Otherwise, I would have just left it back in the room to save me the hassle.
After my bag passes through the scanner it gets flagged. I am asked by the TSA agents if it is my bag. When I confirm I am asked to step aside so they can search the bag. They ask me if I had anything dangerous or fragile in the bag. I assure them that there is no such item. At that point they tell me they need to search the bag and I need to stand at the side. I am firmly instructed not to put my hands in while they search. They take a wooden paddle like object and run it through the perimeter of my bag. Then they mutter amidst themselves wondering where "it" could be.
At this point I am sure it is the corkscrew. I just want to help them out, say where it is and get it done with. Somehow my brown person instincts gag me and ask me to remain compliantly silent. They then lift my leather messenger bag and look at it suspiciously. "it could be in here" says one to the other. Then finally they spot the corkscrew in plain sight right below the messenger bag. They open it with suspicion. "is this ok?" the other one now asks. They continue to carefully examine the single helix structure and focus on the pointy end. Eventually, they conclude that the corkscrew is indeed harmless and let me proceed.
I heaved a sigh of relief and immediately look for my white colleague. I am jealous that she got a TSA pre-check randomly. I wonder when my lucky day for TSA pre-check will come. I realize that the entire episode was not at all frightening or annoying even. I actually find myself quite amused at the whole incident. Just a few months earlier I had carried a utility screw driver through security. The TSA will never cease to amuse me. I am pleased at their commitment to entertain passengers.
