One of my fav films of all time ❤️
Its so real. And I never understand why ppl complain that the film glorifies stalking/wrist-slitting. 😕
It doesnt. And its very much a reality in the small cities of India. I belong to Bihar & have heard many stories, even girls stalking boys ones 😆
Infact through Kundan's redemption they to try to give a moral that doing all this isnt a solution. Even after resorting to all this, Zoya never fell for Kundan & ultimately was going to marry Jasjit. He realised this & tried moving on by lending a hand in her marriage preparations. So they never glorified stalking etc IMO 🤔
Zoya's character was the meatiest one hands down. She was such a b**ch 😆
Still you feel for her in the climax scene when Kundan is dying
That's the beauty of the film. You feel for all characters, good or bad.

I feel we should move on from heroic portrayal of obsession and stalking. Yes movies effect our way of thinking, inspire and influence a lot specially when we are in school. South movie contains lots of such heroic story in their movie. Cases like following where a profile of simple looking like dhaush with same obsession, engineering with no criminal background hack a woman with a sickle in full public view in a crowed platform just because she rejected him . Its time movies should abandon all these stalking , obsession glorification. Earlier i also like such movies of heroic obsession but not now 😆

Female Infosys employee hacked to death at Chennai

Another recent case , curious is most of them use sickle , knife etc.

It may be reality bcoz emotions are real and we are emotional fool . Still reality influence by what we saw in movies media etc. , what we look in our environment . They create an impression on us when we saw stalking as glorification. I saw lot of my friend wrote kkkiran type in hand , chest etc. in school and they show that with pride. In one case someone goes to extreme. So a hero in a movie can go as bad so also good as per the script but in real life it is difficult to take a step back , control emotion and realise mistake. like i may react rejection in different way , may be another guy react in different way. Out of say 100 may be a fraction take the next step of this as standing with a acid bottle or a knife is right approach for rejection and sometime realization is too late. Movie maker should try to understand our psychic rather than just sale a product as love story because we love that .

Most of these movies glorify obsession stalking that why even we consider the antagonist as hero and feel sad for him , They make a hero out of villain and they are rage among us.

I love love this movie. I think it's a little underrated. One of the few movies about true, no holds barred love, messy and illogical in all its glory..The last time a BW movie showed love like this, to the point of destruction, was easily Dil Se...actually it's equally about redemption. Such a refreshing take on the Heer-Ranjha story too..
Dhanush as Kundan was absolute love...and IMHO, while Kundan is the soul of the film, Zoya is also one of the most layered, interesting female characters in BW...sometimes films don't have to female-centric or serious & hard-hitting to give good roles to actors & actresses.

This director-writer combo of Anand Rai-Himanshu Sharma are really something else...they manage to create this amazingly relatable UP-Delhi middle-class milieu full of characters right out of everyday life, especially if you KNOW that setting...their work is immensely charming, original, yet full of subtext with thought-provoking remarks about gender, middle class-society, education, etc.

Haha...I absolutely Love this Movie...
Sad that ppl only relate this movie with Stalking ...like aaj bhi , tab bhi kiya tha when Movie had released...But this movie is more then that , It talks about Unrequited Love like you metioned , there is Junoon type Love which we rarely see in BW movies , redemption ( Kundan sceen with Pandit near Ganga ghat , Thta scene talks so much abt Kundan's realization) ...also there is light put on Gir's Thought how she wants Freedom and zoya finds that in Jasjit and his ideologies...Zoya too was a Rebel just like Jasjit and Kundan...

About Kundan ...Saccha Aashiq tha Banda...

and yeah that Last shot of Grown up Kundan and lil Kundan is Absolute Love...

and the Movie had soem Killer Dialogues..

Although i have have watched many stalker movies but i guess Raanjhana was anything but an obsessive stalker story.
It sure does begins from it and the wrist slitting nonsense IS portrayed as nonsense, no where in the movie did i see the narrative glorifying wrist slitting, it was portrayed as a fault on the part of the character, and later the raw, real political scenario which highlighted Kundan's redemption was a lesson for every stalker who thinks he can get a girl by blackmailing ..

I respect ur opoinions but for me the movie was not at all a stalker story.

It was a story of a boy who fell in love with the wrong girl .. crossed limits for her and then died trying to step back.

One of the best love story of BW
I dont understand why people glorify it as stalker mivie
Initially, he was stalking, yes he did stupid stuff a d his joononiyathcost Jasjit his life but after hisredemption was shown which i liked even more
The movie showed what obsession n stalking does, it showed a girl can never be won by force
For me the best phase is. Kundan's search for peace in Dargah, Mandir, Gurudwara and then obeying that man k agar mukti chahte ho toh uski maafi lo jiska dil dukhaya ho

Though it had shown stalking initially, but its consequences were covered too...how it destroyed 4 lives

Kundan was love...Dhanush nailed it
And Sonam as Zoya was surprising...first movie where i loved Sonam

It's a well-made movie & beautifully acted by Dhaanush & Abhay Deol, also Sonam's best till Neerja came along but it's disturbing when people romanticise Raanjhanna which is essentially, just the typical 90s movie where obsessed stalker-boy believes he's in love & stalks beautiful, higher-class girl & is determined to beat her far more able & educated suitors & win her by hook & crook! I saw no love or passion, I just saw a disturbed loser who was nicely manipulated by a self-obsessed, silly girl who played him like a puppeteer plays a puppet. She's clearly not interested, insults him & emotionally abuses him as & when he pleases, laughs at him when he declares naively he'll marry her because in her own words, "Main?? MAIN karoon us Kundan se shaadi? Woh anpadh-gawaar se??! Main itni padhi-likhi hoon, JNU mein padh rahi hoo, Main kyun shaadi maroon isse?!" And who can blame her. That's not her idea of a compatible match/man & she's absolutely right there. Where she is completely wrong, was to manipulate the poor idiot & lead him on to believe there was 'something'.

The very idea of a Zoya-Kundan marriage pis totally repugnant to her, after hearing that he is still obsessed with her, what kind of loser is he??!! Instead of vowing to become something & then attempting to win her love (if he was so madly in love with her & after knowing how important education & status is for his "beloved") he just throws away his entire life & in her "love", has himself willingly killed.

No wonder she used & discarded him like a well-placed tissue, who would not do that. LOL. 🤣

P. S. Did Dhaanush win for this movie? He should've, he & Swara Bhaskar were the best actors in this movie! What a fine actor!!

Lovely music though! And Sonam looked so lovely in that Kathak sequence. 😳 Zeeshan Ayub is a huge find & I hope he does more movies! Super-talented actor!

Not really a fan of the movie except for those cracker dialogues in the first half.."Tumhara pyaar na hua..UPSC ka exam ho gaya..saala itne saal si pass hi nahi ho raha" 🤣 And that scene where he comes back to the abandoned shaadi ka ghar and those band waale suddenly wake up from sleep and play some marriage song. 😆 Second half was kinda silly. Dhanush along with Zeeshan make this movie worth a watch. Oh yes, and I like that Piya milenge song too.
