Here's A Rape Survivor's Powerful Response To Salman's Thoughtless Comment

It seems like the furore over Salman Khan's rape remark is not going to go down soon and rightly so.

With feminists and women's organisations expressing their outrage at Bhai for his thoughtless remark, ScoopWHoop caught up withSunitha Krishnan, the Hyderabad based well-known (read this) social activist and a gang rape survivor.

To those of you who do not know, Sunitha Krishnan went from being a gang-rape survivor (at the tender age of 15) to a saviour when she simply refused to stand back and tolerate gender violence and decided to make a difference.

What happened next is a tale of sordid bravery and courage. Single-handedly, the activist managed to rescue about 8,000 girls, braving threats and physical assaults.

Here is her powerful response to Salman Khan:

"I do not wish to take the name of the person in question because I feel it would be an act of giving him too much respect. The fact that he could easily compare himself to being raped shows how badly he has trivialised rape and rape culture. The harsh truth is that good looks and some talent made him the star that he is and he takes this role very lightly. With such fame, comes responsibility.

"Instead of being aware of this, he has basically compared the scars, trauma and abuse of a rape victim to his role in a movie. I keep hearing men and women making such remarks and recently too, I found a woman who made a joke along these lines. She used to say 'I was raped by this' or 'I was raped by that' with no thought on the repercussions of these statements.

"What we need to remember is rape culture is around us and all of these trivialising remarks add to it. As far as I can say, only perverts can make such statements. He is a disgrace."

The poem addressed directly Salman Khan has gone viralThe poem addressed directly Salman Khan has gone viral

Once again, actor Salman Khan has made headlines for the wrong reasons. During a press interaction, he compared the excruciating pain and exhaustion due to the hectic shooting and exercise sessions for his next film Sultan to that felt by "a raped woman". The comment obviously did not go down well with anyone who knows what rape means.

Even if the actor had used the term as a metaphor to emphasise how difficult it was for him to walk after the gruelling wrestling shoots, the comment was unwarranted and unacceptable. Though the film fraternity has " by and large " has been keeping mum on the issue, people on social media have voiced their opinion decisively, vehemently opposing his statement.

Terribly Tiny Tales, a writers' collective that collects and shares short stories across platforms, shared a poem addressed directly to Salman Khan that has gone viral for the right reasons.

Written by Sharanya Rajgopal, the poem informs him of the meaning of rape. "Dear Bhaijaan, Rape as a noun means unlawful sexual intercourse," she writes.

Read the full poem here:

Dear Bhaijaan,
This Eid, you gift me, Sultan.
You gift the producers and distributors 500 crores.
You gift cinema yet another monument of your masculinity.
This Eid, I want to gift you a dictionary.
Rape as a noun means unlawful sexual intercourse.
Or an act of abuse.
Or the act of seizing by force.
Rape as a verb means to commit the crime of rape.
Or to plunder.
Or to take by force.
Rape to a woman who has been a victim means death.
An irreparable loss to life as she had ever known it. Rape not just physically, but emotionally and verbally too.
Rape to a woman who hasn't been a victim means the fear of becoming one.
Bhaijaan,
As I read your comment, I realized that you believed you abused your body to give me a 500 crore Blockbuster on Eid.
Perhaps next time, you will learn to value Allah's gift to you - your body and your humanity. His gift to you is to Be Human.
And in doing that, you might just learn the value of other bodies and humans that are influenced or corrupted by your callous use of language.
Or the way you abuse it.
May Allah be with you.
Eid Mubarak. In advance.

The Sultan actor's father Salim Khan has apologised for Salman's uninformed statement, but the National Commission for Women on June 21 asked the actor to apologise in seven days

An Open Letter To Salman Khan: For His Insensitive Rape' Comment

  • Share

  • >

Dear Bhai,

Aren't you controversy's favourite child? Frankly, I do not think that you deserve being addressed as dear, or called a bhai at all, but I'll try to be formal here.

To be very honest, I used to love your movies once. Andaz Apna Apna, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, what wasn't there to love? You knew how to be funny, witty, romantic, and with just a couple of movies, you won the hearts of the millennial.

But that was the end of it. After that you took the route to monstrosity - beating up your girlfriends, killing an endangered animal, running your car over people and killing them. But, you still remained the hero of thousands of people.

This does not regard any of those, though. You have never outrightly respected women, so it surely did not come off as a shock to a lot of people like me when you compared your exhaustion because of a shoot, to a victim of rape.

You said, and I quote, "While shooting, during those six hours, there'd be so much of lifting and thrusting on the ground involved. That was tough for me because if I was lifting, I'd have to lift the same 120-kilo guy 10 times for 10 different angles. And likewise, get thrown that many times on the ground. This act is not repeated that many times in the real fights in the ring. When I used to walk out of the ring, after the shoot, I used to feel like a raped woman. I couldn't walk straight."

Even though you realised that your comment was barbaric immediately after saying it, that does not nullify the statement, which you knew would be carried forward. You, Mr. Khan, have been put on such a high pedestal by your fans that whatever you say influences them in a huge manner. You are responsible for these people who stand by you no matter what. By making such comparisons, you are trivialising a very inhumane act (which you have no right to) and embedding in people's mind that it is okay to create rape analogies.

Well, according to your manager, you were misquoted. Of course, you were. If not misquoted, then you must have been possessed by a demon or something, because who in their right mind would say something like that?

But, you will get away with it, just like you got away with murder and harassment.

Your comparison of your training to a rape victim is as futile as the movies you do. Can you even imagine the horror and mental trauma a woman goes through when she is raped and her soul is ripped into pieces?

For starters, a rape victim does not call for the rape and the pain that follows, but YOU wanted to do the movie and the rigorous training because of the money that will flow after that.

A woman who is raped gets nothing but degradation, which is in direct contrast with the glorification and love you will receive after this movie.

While the society is gruesome and unforgiving in the case of a raped woman, who has to carry the burden and stigma of rape all her life, you are treated like God, where people jump up to defend you even after every miserable thing you do.

A woman, who is forced upon, does not expect the pain, but you knew exactly what you were getting into.

So no, you COULDN'T HAVE felt like a "raped woman". You need to understand that you cannot just drop such a strong word like "rape" without even understanding the state that rape puts a person in, and then apologise for using it. A spark ignites a fire, we all know that.

But, you are THE BHAI and you can do anything you want to and people will continue to worship you.

If people are turning a blind eye to whatever you do because "Bhai toh Being Human chalaata hai, he has a good heart, galti ho jaati hai", that does not mean that you continue to speak whatever your heart desires.

While your movies are such gems (which you should really consider keeping with yourself because of how precious they are), if you could please try to control your tongue from spitting out such wonderful words, that would be delightful!

Yours truly,

A dejected HUMAN BEING

Just googled about this amazing girl Sunitha Krishnan...What a spine chilling story does she have!!!! Her own parents disowned her and left her on the roads to fend for herself...What unfortunate jerks!

Anyways, now I know why I am calling the pathetic piece of shit in various names other than the said name...It just doesn't feel right to call him by that beautiful name...Referring to someone by their name is a form of respect one gives to another human being...This person doesn't deserve it!

I love, love her response. And she hasn't just pointed out about salman, but also how we as women have started to use "rape" as an adjective. How many times have all of you heard - i raped the rewind button of youtube for this video etc etc

.. Short and very powerful and to the point.

No one should ever have to go through such trauma. It is so sad what happened to these women. It is chilling.
He is such a pathetic person. He is not even apologizing and his fans on twitter are such losers.

One of the best open letters I have ever read. Short and effective. Devoid of any unnecessary drama.
God knows when he will apologize or realize his mistake. It's been 2 days already. If this was for Sultan promotion, not sure how much of it is working coz Sultan promotions have taken a back seat rather everyone is dissing his cruel remarks. Of course some are defending too.
Anyway I really want to see how he or his PR manages to get him out of his own created mess.
