UP is India's first successful attempt at dark comedy in years.

Watched the movie today at theatre.
(i know another thread on UP, but crack off😆)


Negative :
I will not overhype it, as to be honest movie fell flat at screen play at times especially second half.

First half was despite being slow at times was engaging. The second half was bit dragged and that ek kudi song was unnecessary. It should have ended post Shahid sang it for that hospitalised drug dealer. As the movie had reached its best pace and rhythm at that point at that time and that song slowed it down. It was disappointing at that point.

Positive:

But hats off to the direction and the actors performance and timing, it was a really good dark comedy and didn't felt really bored .Some of the scenes were really funny, both situational comedy and witty lines were brilliant. Satish Kaushik was roit with his timing of the "gaalis". Absolutely khateelana. Also Shahid's scenes at the hospital with that guy was hilarious. Also his convo with Alia was humorous.

Despite the humour, the theme was dark, and it was not OTT or gross. It was well executed, the dark theme part.
Also the Alia rape scenes were directed brilliantly which showed how to make rape scenes equally daunting without showing the actual rape.
Also that jail scene with Shahid was really powerful, that look on his face when he cames to know one of the guys killed his mother for drugs was excellent.
Also the drug hangover scenes by both Alia and the actor who played Diljit 's bro were top notch.


Acting :

Shahid: His look did half of the job. He looked awesome as the rock star. I remember when his look first came out people were like "copycat", "wannabe" etc etc. But he looked and carried the look perfectly. His acting was top notch, Tommy Shing was a really weird character, and Tommy protrayed it brilliantly. The look and the acting was excellent. In that grade thread I gave him B+, i was wrong this guy is A.
Although it is not his best as some are saying. Haider is still his best work. 9/10


Diljit: This guy is charming. Full stop. I can see why girls are already all over him. This guy is a natural romantic hero. His scenes with Kareena was really endearing, because he was just so real with blushing and shy expressions. Also he was not the typical action hero fearless type, rather he protrayed those fearful yet brave scenes professionally. It was a simple yet impactful performance. If he is typecasted, he will be a BW superstar. The scene where he beats up the driver, he executed the expression of a frustrated person very well. 9/10

Kareena: She was hit and miss. Her character was about a solid lady with soft heart. While her solid lady part was really well protrayed, thumbs up to her. But her soft heart part was half baked. As ahe tends to over express. Also that scene when she tells Diljit about finding, she was full on Geet mode. Her expression and everything was Geet type. 7.5/10

Alia: she had the most difficult part, as she had minimum dialogues and had to do most of the acting through her body languages and expression. And she did an excellent job. Especially the drug addiction scenes, that drug hangover scene where she puts cloth in her mouth.
Her and Shahid 's conversation were the highlight of the movie, it was really witty and well acted.
I don't know whether she deserve NA or not, but surely deserves respect for protrayal of such a difficult character with brilliance. 9.5/10

Satish Kaushik was outstanding, roit, his delivery is still top notch. The guy who played Diljit's bro was brilliant. Also that guy who was killed by Alia, the one who loves her was real creepy and excellent. Actually acting the most strong point of the movie.

Also the most important part and motive, the drugs issue of the movie is well described. Drugs are not glorified, nor the situation is exaggerated, it is shown as it is.

This movie is definitely the best dark comedy to come out of Bollywood in years especially because of the brilliant acting and well executed scenes. Although I wish the screen play are tighter in the second half. 7.5/10
