Box Office: Fan Witnesses A Very Good Occupancy In The Morning Shows

April 15, 2016
SHARE

The Shah Rukh Khan starrer Fan, which has hit the screens today, has received a very good opening of around 55-60% on an average in the multiplexes across the country.

Though this occupancy is comparatively less than SRK's previous release Dilwale, Fan has got an added advantage of better screen count (3500), whereas Dilwale released in 3000 screens and a partial holiday.

SRK's Fan Receives Very Good Occupancy In The Morning Shows

A good growth in the evening and night shows in multiplexes on account of partial holiday in lot of places is expected.

West Bengal has received a super start, followed by Mumbai and Delhi. Well, Mumbai hasn't performed as expected so far, however a jump in the second half of the day is definitely on cards.

SPOILERS AHEAD

A double dose of a Bollywood superstar intent on pushing himself into new zones as an actor makes for a passably watchable spectacle in Maneesh Sharma's Fan.

The film might, however, have yielded decidedly more than just superficial delights had the director not resorted to standard means to wrap up his tale of an obsessed movie fan run amok.

The besotted admirer of the title is Gaurav Chandna (Shah Rukh Khan, with protruding teeth and looking years younger than he is), a West Delhi boy who is a lookalike of a fictional matinee idol, Aryan Khanna (Khan again).

Gaurav is unabashedly obsessed with everything that Aryan Khanna does. The walls of his room are plastered with cutouts of the actor in his various movie roles.

Even the cyber cafe that Gaurav runs is named after his favourite actor: AK Cyber Chat.

The fact that he resembles the showbiz icon makes Gaurav a bit of a star in his own right in the neighbourhood.

He impersonates Aryan Khanna at the annual Dussehra mela organized by Inder Vihar's DDA Colony and walks away with the best performer trophy every year.

Trouble is Gaurav takes his ardour beyond acceptable limits. When slighted by the object of his fantasies, he engineers a bitter confrontation between fan and idol that plays out in London, Dubrovnik (Croatia) and Mumbai.

Fan is a rather odd admixture of the real and the make-believe. The former works quite well; the latter not so much.

In the first half, the fact that Gaurav bears an uncanny likeness to Aryan Khanna does not invite any public gasps of surprise from those who run into him in the street and elsewhere.

Neither the guards manning the entrance of Aryan Khanna's Mumbai bungalow nor the hundreds of other fans milling around the place take any notice of Gaurav.

But in the second half, visitors at Madame Tussauds as well as the London police are taken in by his visage and believe him to be the movie star the world knows.

The repeated identity switcheroos that Gaurav pulls off are contrived to the point that even Aryan Khanna's wife falls for the ruse.

When Gaurav is on his Aryan Khanna trip - which is almost always - he is egged on by his parents despite the mother occasionally fretting over his college grades.

These portions of Fan are largely believable. But when one fine day, Gaurav decides to undertake a ticketless rail trip to Mumbai to meet Aryan Khanna in person, the film begins to stretch credulity.

The travelling ticket examiner and the railway police force men give Gaurav a long rope and he makes it to Mumbai instead of ending up in jail.

The film comes close to careening completely out of control after the hounded movie star decides to take matters into his own hands and confront his rogue fan head-on.

If it doesn't, it is solely because of the flair SRK brings to the film, especially in the guise of the misguided fan.

It is difficult to fathom why a Bollywood star who has a retinue of men (and women) at his beck and call would go gunning for his tormentor all by himself, chasing him through Delhi's chaotic traffic.

These liberties dim the impact of what is otherwise a screenplay that has enough going for it.

Also, for a songless Hindi film, Fan needed to be much shorter than it is. At its nearly two-and-a-half-hour length, it overstays its welcome by at least 30 minutes.

After Gaurav is left disillusioned by Aryan Khanna's refusal to grant him the five minutes that he seeks with him, the former vows to ensure that it will be the star who will now do all the running.

The film takes that line literally and Aryan Khanna is actually reduced to shed his starry cloak and chase the seriously bothersome Gaurav.

Fan does have several redeeming features, not the least of which are the flashes of intelligence in Habib Faisal's screenplay.

As with many a recent SRK vehicle, there is no dearth of self-deprecatory humour here.

On a chartered flight from London to Dubrovnik, Aryan's assistant (Sayani Gupta, making a mark despite limited scope) advises him to ignore Gaurav. "He is neurotic," she tells him. The star retorts rhetorically: "What, am I?"

At a flashy wedding where Aryan is slated to perform, the wealthy host berates him for arriving late. "Mr Bhutiani, I will make it up to you," he says.

"You better do, I am paying you a bomb," Bhutiani says.

Especially commendable is the manner in which the writer and the director imagine the spaces that the deceptively vicious anti-hero occupies: they are tangible and easy to relate to.

For the record, any similarities that Fan might have with Tony Scott's 1996 film, The Fan, seems only superficial and incidental.

The Hollywood psychological thriller was set in the world of baseball and the fan, played by Robert De Niro, wasn't a lookalike.

Fan works for the most part because it has the fabulous SRK act as a 'young' star-struck boy. His energetic performance is worth the price of the ticket - if not more.

It is fascinating to watch the actor making the transition from a gawky movie-crazy youngster to a swaggering Bollywood star mimic on stage to a psychologically unhinged stalker who pulls out the stops.

Fan is proof that even if SRK isn't 25 years old, he certainly has the kind of enthusiasm that might put many 25-year-old actors to shame.

Watched the movie ...just because of the title as even I am a fan of somebody .And I loved the promotions where they went and meet so many fans . But movie didnt did justice to anything much , SRK acting was good , that's it . Not very happy with the storyline , though Aryan at his place was right always ...gaurav was completely disconnected from reality ...it gonna be 10 years that I ship an actress so badly but I would love to put light on that being a fan isn't a disease that you loose the power to decide btw what is wrong and what is right . And moreover , however harsh the situation gets on a fan , he will never try to damange / harm the celebrity he/ she loved . That's one thing a fan can never do in life . They didn't did justice to gaurav at all . And one more thing , fans Ke liye milna sabkuch nahi Hota ...sharukh himself saw in trips that there are people who dedicated their life to him but haven't tried meeting or met him after ages of being his fan . Fan demand nothing , alll they need is the star happy at the end of the day bas . This harming the star you loved from childhood didn't go well with me , Aryan reactions were justified , gaurav's werent . I don't know what I was thinking when I wished to watch this . Acting wise sharukh sir did a good job though . The way they promoted jabra album , my expectations were quiet high from the film , so got disappointed but hope it works for sharukh sir and the team . They worked a lot on it ...and such huge amount of money .

Fan Movie Review : SRK Wins it all in this Gamble!

April 15, 2016 Team Pinkvilla44012 reads3 comments

When one of our friends first saw the trailer of Shah Rukh Khan's last release Dilwale, she groaned. "Not again!" While watching the film today, she was too engrossed to care about the munching. She lost herself in the world of Gaurav Chandna, whom she kept defending to us while everyone around kept murmuring - "What a creep!" The box office fate of the film is irrelevant because in this one attempt, SRK definitely has won back his die-hard fans. Just with his sheer effort of making something that any mainstream superstar would never imagine risking, he has redeemed himself.

Fan is different for him. His dedication is hard to miss. As Gaurav, he is flawless. As the superstar Aryan Khanna, he is flawed. No matter what Gaurav does, you are compelled to believe he is faultless. You want to be his counsel, reason out his actions. It is not often that one of his King Khan's characters overpower him in a film, but Gaurav does. Despite being outrageous, incorrigible and sometimes silly, the film belongs to him.

Right from the first frame, director Maneesh Sharma's world tempts you. Gaurav is a regular Dilli Ka Launda who harbours big dreams. He wants to meet his favourite superstar, gift him his own 'Best Actor of the Colony' trophy, show off about his ooh-la-la moment and move on. Bas itna sa khwab tha... But meeting India's biggest superstar even for a few minutes is impossible. The fan manages the feat by using some cheap tricks and illegal ways. The superstar is miffed. Heartbreak is inevitable.

For the first hour of the film, Maneesh keeps the story moving smoothly. But it eventually suffers from over-plotting and a grievous lack of logic. Would you believe a superstar could be arrested in a foreign land and denied his lawyer for a day? There are many such silly instances in the film that you'll never buy. But Maneesh doesn't seem to care. His faith on his material is moving. Gaurav uses his Aryan Khanna-ish face to his advantage. In a matter of days, Aryan loses his good name, his stardom and the mudslinging damages his career of 25 years.

Sharma's story is simple but his execution lacks certainty. It looks like thriller, feels like drama and ends up looking contrived. Definitely, there are moments that will tear you up. Treat yourself to a cupcake if you don't choke up at the scene when Gaurav sees Aryan for the first time. But Maneesh never makes Aryan half as charming or affable as Shah Rukh. Neither does he have King Khan's wit, his cocky attitude or his spunky arrogance. Aryan is flat and he is only as much as SRK makes him.

But Gaurav comes straight from Maneesh's heart. He is adorable. His love is overwhelming. Even when you hate his guts, you want to loathe his actions, you can't do it well. Doff your hat to SRK who gives him that evil streak without villainifying him.

But the film exhausts you eventually. There are far too many similar looking chase sequences. If the Chase-Breathe-Repeat doesn't disappoint you, the shabby editing will. And no matter how novel the film seems, the final sequence is picked up straight from Darr. The good thing is that SRK's passion hasn't changed one bit. He still is as earnest, his eyes twinkling with the spark of a newbie. Probably that is the stuff superstars are made of - relentlessness. The plague of the second half does its best to mar the noble intentions behind the movie, but eventually SRK saves the day.

Never in your wildest dream would you have imagined the country's top superstar to pick up a role that could easily destroy his image. He could be misconstrued but looks like he has freed himself from the unnecessary pressure of box office wars. At 50, he is a new man who has lived his dream, become the legend that he sought out to be. His mantra now is to work towards recreating himself. Remember the television actor, who wasn't even the male lead and debuted in Bollywood playing second fiddle to an established superstar? Remember how he played negative roles twice over in his first few films...

In his chase to becoming the Badshah, Khan left behind that young boy from who came out of Delhi's tang gullies... who wanted to the rule the world. The King is now back to pick up from where he began and looks like the fan child of cinema in him, will walk beside him, henceforth.

We rate the film a 70% on the PinkVilla Movie Meter .
