It's Sonam Season In Bollywood, And It Started Before 'Neerja'

SONAM KAPOOR

The winds have been changing for a while now, but with the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Neerja it's safe to say that it's finally Sonam season in Bollywood. With this film about heroic air hostess Neerja Bhanot, Sonam Kapoor has surprised all those sceptics who were unsure of her ability to drive a serious biopic, and the movie is turning out to be for Sonam what Queen, Cocktail and Paa were for some of her peers.

Usually in the news for her style statements or candid quotes, and more recently a cameo in Coldplay's "Hymn For The Weekend", this is the first time that Sonam Kapoor -- the actress -- is getting all the attention.

Neerja is turning out to be for Sonam what Queen, Cocktail and Paa were for some of her peers.

For her, the journey from Saawariya to Neerja has been slow, but she has been on a steady ascendant for some time now, with confident performances in Raanjhanaa and Khoobsurat, followed by a stunning music video with Hrithik Roshan and to top it all a dance step that is now a must-do at every wedding sangeet.

Here's a throwback to all those times we fell in love with Sonam Kapoor!

Saawariya

If you jog your memory a bit and rewind to Diwali 2007, you will recollect that Sonam Kapoor's shy persona gave tough competition to Deepika Padukone's magnetic screen presence (in rival release Om Shanti Om). Unfortunately for her Saawariya sank without a trace, but those enduring images of Sonam in songs like "Yun Shabnami", "Masha Allah", "Thode Badmash" and the title track gave us a glimpse of that charming smile and trademark sparkle in the eyes that were bound to win a million hearts in the years to come.

Delhi 6

She came, she saw, she danced with a pigeon on her head... And voila! A star was born. The "Masakalli"-moment over the years became a defining image for the actress and still enjoys exceptional recall whenever the actress interacts with her fans and the media.

Aisha

Unfortunately there isn't much love among critics for good-looking films with wealthy characters. Which is why Sonam's remarkable portrayal of a high-society control-freak brat didn't get the attention it deserved. Scratch the glossy surface and you'll notice a performance that accurately captures the vibe of a section of South Delhi's posh young crowd.

Khoobsurat also suffered from the Aisha problem... It just wasn't dark and depressing enough to be applauded by the critics.

Raanjhanaa

Dhanush's breakthrough performance left little scope for anybody else to shine in this hinterland romance, but Sonam Kapoor was self-assured in her portrayal of a character that was not exactly likeable. Revisit it today and you see a nuanced performance that gave context to the entire plot as well as the leading man's character.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

A short and sweet cameo in the flashback portions of the movie worked due to her ever-so-addictive smile, as she perfectly symbolised the goodness and positivity that her character's presence brought to the protagonist's troubled youth.

Khoobsurat

This one also suffered from the Aisha problem... It just wasn't dark and depressing enough to be applauded by the critics. Playing our desi counterpart to Anne Hathaway's Princess Diaries, Sonam Kapoor brought a unique freshness to a somewhat predictable premise with her vibrancy and energy. Sonam is especially superb in her scenes with Fawad Khan, and the way she plays off his intense persona is among the best examples of on-screen chemistry in recent times.

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo

When was the last time a Himesh Reshammiya track with Indian dance steps and an extravagant Rajasthani setting went viral for the right reasons? Sonam Kapoor's gorgeous moves from Sooraj Barjatya's family drama became such a talking point on the Internet that it inspired a mini-Dubsmash revolution in the country. Despite being a Salman Khan film it was this track and her steps that got people talking. This was indeed Sonam's "Didi Tera Devar"...And the beginning of the magic that we are experiencing now in Neerja.

Time to flood IF with good analysis, now that Neerja is a certified clean superhit. Iam so happy Sonam Kapoor finally succeed in doing this. Since 2008 with Aisha, it was a long time in coming!

Lesson: never give up on your dreams!

Chick-flick is not quite a popular genre in India, but if she manages to make it work it will be a great step up for actresses.

Chick flick (female lead) > Masala (female flowerpot)

Felt like the article has been written by Sonam herself. The part about Aisha and Khoobsurat reminds me of her statements in Koffee with Karan. 😆
How about Aisha and Khoobsurat not getting applauded because of her bad acting? And now that Neerja is being appreciated by critics because it's dark and depressing, it's all okay and good?
Anushka in Band Baaja, Pari in Ricky Bahl, Richa Chaddha in Fukrey, Deepika in Chennai Express, Sridevi in English Vinglish did not portray dark and depressing characters but got ample amount of praise from the critics.

You need to 'act' to get praised by the critics which she has done in Neerja. Hiding flaws in acting by blaming the critics is pretty lame.

👏This! Iam so glad this genre is finally & slowly getting recognition. I think it was because of sexism. Play second fifddle to a man & you are a true heroine. Unless you act only in dark depressing movies!
Like fun movies cannot be praised at all! Comedies are not so easy to pull off, i hope Sonam keeps doing those. All she needs is airtight scripts, they will be more successful now that she has done Neerja. đŸ„ł

The only good thing they had to say about Sonam in Prem Ratan was the Matha Phod step 😆

If anything it is the dark depressing movies that don't get their due credit in Bollywood and are ignored for lighter and more appealing films 😆

LOL! Of course you do 😳 I love how you will act like your beloved is FLAWLESS in her movies. Well, apparently she was in one. Tamasha. Where she is playing the groundbreaking role of a girlfriend. Yeah never done before. 👏

NO actor is above improvement. I find it so funny how this goes only for Sonam Kapoor, & only when she is getting good feedback & loads of praise for her hard work. Somehow it means she is not good enoughđŸ€Ș

According to some here on IF, Sonam is so dumb, so my question is: how can she write an entire article herself!!đŸ˜Č God forbid there are people out there who call it like they see it! How can they share the same opinion as herđŸ˜Č

TAKE HIS CREDENTIALS BACK, OMFG HE IS BIASED FOR SONAM KAPOOR!!

Really? I dont see the same Bollywood as you do. 😆
"serious" movie always get the most critical acclaim, unless they are botched. Chick flicks actresses get the least respect & it is not only a Bwood thing.
