Does the audience support nepotism/dynasticism in the film industry?

Hola!

So, my friend and I were having a discussion about how movie stars have turned the film industry all over India into a family business.

She brought up an interesting point and said the audience too supports nepotism and dynasticism by wanting to see generations of the same family dominate the film industry.

For example, she said that whenever she recommends a film to her parents, they first ask her who is in it. By who is in it, they mean, "Whose son/daughter/nephew/niece is in it?". They recognise actors by their surnames and not their work. People wanna see what Rishi Kapoor's son is like or what Shtrughan Sinha's daughter is like.

Is it a part of the audience's penchant to watch movies for stars instead of the storyline?

This is anecdotal evidence, but what are your views on this?

How much of a role does the audience play in promoting nepotism?

Funny thing is, A lot of those even on this forum complain about nepotism are the same ones are spending most of the time discussing star kids/ watching their movies etc etc
Giving star kids the MOST PUBLICITY

so yes star kids are supported by the audience

Surname will carry weightage, only if their parents are actors. (Varun Dhawan is not a star son, but still is successful). Very few star kids have survived. Shatrughan Sinha's sons could not make it. Twinkle Khanna, Abhi Junior could not make it.

Most every other person in BW is related to someone or the other. Same thing in the South. If the audience is lucky, we get a talent like a Kajol or a Ranbir, but most are duds.
I rant here but short of boycotting most BW movies in protest, what choice do I as an audience member have ? I want to watch BW movies and so I watch them in the vain hope cream of talented will rise despite the crap. Change will come only if the industry wants it and I think it is coming slowly but surely. But as long as there are powerful gatekeepers like KJo who specialize in mass introducing starkids, the audience has no choice really except not go to the movies.

Well, nepotism is definitely a problem but the audience has very little to do with that imo. One of the biggest stars today is SRK and he was no famous actor's son.

The problem is actually the industry itself. You have directors like Karan Johar who literally worship the ground that star kids walk on. Some directors just want to work with a star kid because they're good friends with the father or mother whom they worked with in their previous films.
And then sometimes the parents have enough power/money to launch their own kids lol
So the industry needs to change their ways

It is really unfair and that is the reason why the talent in Bollywood is considered very mediocre..or at least some people think so.

Sadly, it's true.
And as hard as it is to admit it, I am guilty of it too.
I was so excited to see Karisma's younger sister join films in 2000.
I remember when Bobby + Twinkle debuted in 1995 it was a major deal and we were all curious.
Even now thinking of Sridevi's daughters becoming movie stars excites me.
Damn. Great topic.

This is like coming out of my mind.

Nepotism exists because of audiences. Everything exits cause of them. Those who support nepotism in the industry job is to sell us such nonsense ... The sad reality is people do end up buying it in the end.
