You can take it in 2 ways..

1) Romancing with other co-stars is work.. they have to maintain professionalism.. they can't just say they won't do it.. because that would not go well.. the costar may take it personally as well... But with each other, they have the freedom to say "look I am not comfortable".. let's just talk the director out of this..Both movies they worked are his home productions too.. so no issues with producer there.

2) Another thing is.. I guess it might be awkward to pretend to romance in front of others.. you know you become self conscious..if u have something to hide... Similarly, if u think, ok this person has an idea about our relationship, so if we act in such scenes, it might make them come to a conclusion. If they want to hide it till they announce it, this might be the case..
