Sanjay Gupta: In a clash, the weaker film suffers twice as much

By Mohar Basu | 24 Oct 2016

Sanjay Gupta's Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam-starrer, 'Kaabil', is set to release on Republic Day 2017, making it clash with Rahul Dholakia's Raees, featuring Shah Rukh Khan. The director is evidently unhappy.

"Such clashes are unnecessary. The film industry is one big family. We don't step on each other's toes. If any other film had announced their release first, I am sure Rakeshji (producer Rakesh Roshan) wouldn't have released 'Kaabil' on the same date," he says, adding that given that the box office only has scope for a 40-crore opening, the releases will inevitably eat into each other's business. "In order to share the profits of one holiday, we'll now have to share income for the whole week. In case of a clash, the weaker film suffers twice as much," he laments.
While Gupta is bothered by the situation, he confesses to having made peace with it. For now, he is enjoying the attention that his film's teaser is receiving. "The teaser was Hrithik's brainchild," says the director, whose 41-second glimpse into the film punctuates a series of muted shots with the hard-hitting lines of its blind protagonist. "When I first heard the concept, I wasn't convinced, but when I saw it, I found it mind-blowing."

Reports had alleged that Hrithik and Sanjay went to several lengths to keep the details of the film under wraps, including denying the use of cellphones on set. But the latter laughs off the rumours diplomatically. "We weren't anal about it, but we went the extra mile to ensure that people see the film's glimpses only when the time is right. This is the kind of movie that thrives on mystery," he says, terming the performance of his leading actor as "path-breaking".

"After watching him essay the role of a blind man in 'Kaabil', people will compare the portrayal of a visually impaired person in cinema with that of Hrithik's. He has broken the mould. There is not an ounce of sympathy in the tone," he says, adding that the point that the film wishes to drive home is that blind people have heightened senses, which makes them equally equipped to lead regular lives.

So, will Hrithik break into his signature moves? "He does shake a leg," confesses Sanjay. "It's senseless to not have a dance sequence in a film featuring Hrithik Roshan. After all, who would enjoy a Michael Jackson concert if he doesn't play Beat It? Kaabil isn't a dance-oriented film though. It showcases the fantastic actor that Hrithik is."

Sanjay confesses that despite the failure of Ashutosh Gowarikar's period-drama, 'Mohenjo Daro', Hrithik's career doesn't need a revival. "He is a superstar and everyone at that stature has had their share of highs and lows. When Jai Ho didn't fare as expected, no one said that Salman needed a push. Hrithik's career is too vast to be bogged down by one flop," he reasons.

Gupta confesses that he enjoyed collaborating with Rakesh, who, despite being involved with the project, didn't hinder with its development. "Once we started rolling, Rakeshji visited us just for a day. His inputs on the rushes were insightful. Since we envisioned the film similarly, there were no conflicts," he signs off.

Though he has given interesting insight abt the making of the movie,Gupta should stop whining abt the clash...why does he have to make ridiculous statements like "weaker film suffers as much"...this can lead to assumption that he is not confident on his film...

the teaser was Hrithik's idea...that was very good...

Hrithik Roshan Watched This Hollywood Actor to Prep For Kaabil
Beverly Kim White | October 25, 2016 09:18 IST (Mumbai)

Actor Hrithik Roshan is taking a cue from a Hollywood legend for his next, Kaabil. At a media preview of the launch of the trailer of the film, Hrithik told NDTV that for his role as a visually impaired man in the film there was only one actor to look upto. "Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman was probably the only performance I took note of before doing this," Hrithik said.

Hrithik had his fair share of challenges while shooting the film with the action scenes being particularly difficult to deliver on. However, Hrithik was inspired by the brave visually impaired people he has spent time with of late.

"There is not a single note of playing the victim in my role. It is because I have spent some time with visually impaired people of late. They have come to my house, taken selfies with me and made fun of me. They told me that they are my biggest fans and have seen or rather heard all my films," Hrithik said.

The action may have been the most challenging in Kaabil but the choreography was the most fulfilling for Hrithik. Strong words from an ace dancer.

"The moves, the emotions that have gone into the dancing in this film, it was really special. The dancing in this film is my favourite amongst all my works. Ahmed (Khan) has done such a fantastic job."

Asked to describe Kaabil, Hrithik's father, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, and director Sanjay Gupta who were also present at the trailer preview seemed to search for words. They finally settled on describing it as a love story which also has its thrills.

Hrithik's recent career graph hasn't been particularly inspiring. His last film, Mohenjo Daro with actress Pooja Hegde, generated no buzz at the box office but maybe the 'K' factor can give him a much needed plus on the big screen once again.

Kaabil Blind Man Hrithik Roshan Hits A Six: Trailer Review

SpotboyE.com was a part of the exclusive screening of Kaabil trailer, two days before it comes to you, arranged by Roshans. What was our frame of mind when we left the venue? The countdown has begun!

Kaabil Blind Man Hrithik Roshan Hits A Six: Trailer Review
WOW
LOL
W*F
OMG
Hrithik Roshan gets better when his role gets tougher- Lakshya, Koi Mil Gaya, Guzaarish, the list is long. And naturally, it's not easy to play a blind man. We are talking about his next film Kaabil whose trailer releases tomorrow.

SpotboyE.com saw the trailer with Hrithik Roshan, his father Rakesh Roshan (producer of Kaabil) and Sanjay Gupta (director of Kaabil) yesterday afternoon on the big screen and mind you, it was an experience.

While people have just been talking about Hrithik's voice after the teaser, it will be his dialogue delivery that will strike you now. He says his sentences with such correct pauses at such an optimum pace that you can't miss it that this blind character is groping in the dark in letter and spirit both.

Did you work on your dialogue delivery extensively for this one? Ask him that and he says, "No, it happened naturally. I first tend to get into the character and my dialogue delivery just follows." Rakesh Roshan beams with pride and we sit down for a second run.

"It's so emotion packed, it's really intense," is our second reaction.

We start sipping our coffee and discuss every other feature that stands out after two viewings:

Hrithik-Yami Gautam pairing, which one wondered if it would work when they were cast, exudes not just passion but compassion as well. You feel for Hrithik when his world turns topsy-turvy in the trailer and the makers have yet managed to not give it away all that transpires in that turning-point scene. You feel for Hrithik not just because he exudes talent from frame to frame but the manner in which his chemistry with Yami unfolds. "Plus, she looks so Indian," adds Hrithik.

The production values of the film are extremely high. The colours in every frame are from the Roshan stable. Tell them that and pat comes the reply from Rakesh Roshan, "I never hold myself back in expenditure when it's a film from my production house Filmkraft."

The content of the dialogues promises a very entertaining film. "I have always kept in mind that I make a film to entertain the audience. I remember telling Gupta 'you can't go wrong with this one' and he hasn't." Gupta smiles proudly.

As we take their leave, Rakesh Roshan taps us to say that we still haven't heard the four beautiful songs of Kaabil from Rajesh Roshan.

Kaabil has been shot in 60 days. Every good dish doesn't need a long time to get ready. Of course the true experience will be when it is laid on the table in entirety on the Republic Day 2017 weekend, but till then the Roshans and Gupta have definitely given us enough to make us feel that this one will be not just style but substance as well.
