The front page advert, in which the actress is lying down in a red dress, has been the subject of vocal criticisms on social media

An advert on the front page of Pakistani newspaper Jang has drawn vocal complaints from critics who deemed it to be obscene.

The advert, for mobile operator Mobilink, features Bollywood actress Nargis Fakhri pictured lying down in a red dress and holding a mobile phone.

Among the critics were prominent journalist Ansar Abbasi, who also works for Jang:

Other comments accused the ad of "dirtying the newspaper" and making it "look like Playboy". One said: "Today they have put Nargis's image. Tomorrow they will show (Desi po*n star) Sunny Leone."
However, others express support for the advert, including columnist Mehr Tarar, who questioned why this particular ad had prompted such an uproar:

A 2014 study by the Pew Research Centre found that attitudes towards women's dress in Pakistan were avowedly conversative, with 63% of respondents stating they considered women in either the niqab or chador to be most appropriately dressed: Nargis Fakhri, a US citizen of Pakistani and Czech heritage, has appeared in a number of Bollywood films as well as recent US comedy Spy.

Responding to some complaints on Twitter, she appeared bemused by the fuss the advert had caused. In one tweet she said; "Just saw this ad and thought what's all the fuss about? It's creative very different."On Monday a tweet by Jang's Ansar Abbasi indicated that newspaper publishers had been paying attention to the social media storm around the advert: "Learnt that Mobilink has been told by different newspapers that they can't take its absurd ad anymore. Alhamdulillah our protest worked."
