EXCLUSIVE: There are days when I don't get off my pajamas - Kajol

Kajol has been one of those rare breed of actresses who has a fan following that few enjoy. What makes her special is her immense confidence in her talent, her outspoken nature and ability to give competition to her juniors till date. The actress, who dominated Bollywood on her own terms, talks to Pinkvilla on the choices she makes, her take on Gennext actors, her husband Ajay and of course, her all time favourite co-star and buddy, Shah Rukh Khan.
What is an emotional and beautiful actress like you doing in a movie with flying cars, car chase and high octane action sequences?
(Laughs uproariously) Well, it is definitely unpredictable, isn't it? You are asking me that question that in itself shows that it was unpredictable. I wanted to do something different, I wanted to do something that is out of my comfort zone. I wanted to do something that I had not done before, so this film definitely had all those ingredients put together. I wanted to work with people I had not worked with before, so I pulled out of my comfort zone in a very comfortable way though.
With your buddy Shah Rukh in it must have got you more interested?
Definitely. I think it has to be everything. It can't be just one thing. It can't be just the script, or only the character. But the predominant and overriding reasons are script and character. That is really very important. Of course, it has to have a good director, it has to have a good producer, it has to have a good co-star along with it. That all put together makes a fit film for me to do. I like working with Shah Rukh, he likes working with me. The most we can say is that I hope when we work together, we work well.
You and Shah Rukh keep coming back together after regular intervals. Is it that both of you start from where you left, or you have to start from scratch and build that chemistry again?
We never start from scratch, we have been friends for a long time and we have worked together in lot of films. The first day shoot of this film, for instance, there was never an awkward silence or uncomfortable feeling. It is a very, very comfortable feeling working with Shah Rukh and he strives to make so as well.
Both of you are coming back together after five years, did you notice any change in him?
The great thing about Shah Rukh whenever I work with him is that I am always shocked at how passionate and how interested he is in his character, in his films, his persona in his acting. I am always impressed by it. I have done 25 to 30 films in my career and he must have done close to 200 films but he is still so passionate. He is full of ideas - 'Let's do the shot like this or like that'. I always find that amazing about him.
Two of your co-stars -Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon are the Gennext actors. How was it working with them, what are your thoughts when you compare it with the time you stepped into the industry?
Both,Varun and Kriti are very sorted, they are very well put together. They definitely know where they are going, which was nothing that one would say about us when we were newcomers. We had absolutely no clue of what we were doing. We were like, Arre, kaam karo, movie sign karo, khatam karo aur uske baad we didn't know how the film was doing, how it fared at the box office, or what we were going to do next. So I think, yes, they have very clear idea of what they want to do, how they want to present themselves, what they want to say and that why they were here. I think they are much more sorted than we were.
Kajol, we know you of some one who likes being natural, hates doing make-up, dressing up...have you changed over the years?
I have changed over the years, but I am still very casual. I still believe that comfort is best. I still live in my pajamas and there are days I don't get off my pajamas, there are days when you see me outside in pajamas as well. But these days pajamas have become fashionable so I mean, what the hell.
What is Ajay's take on you doing this film?
He was very very supportive when I was approached for the film. In fact, I was hesitant to do the film because there were so many outdoors but he was one of the main people who turned around and told me, Baby don't worry...I know you are worried about the kids, about the outdoors...we will handle it, I will manage it at home'. I thought that was absolutely wonderful on his part. That is true love, really.
So is it because you have to manage family that it took you so long to come back?
Yes, I had a baby, not that I went on a party hopping trip. I wanted to take time out with my kids. I wanted to take time out with my daughter and son which I did and which was necessary. If I want to do a film, I want to do because I want to be there not because I am forcing myself to be there. It's not that, 'Oh, I have not worked and therefore I must sign a film, it is not that'. Fortunately, I am financially stable to make that choice. Why not take advantage of it.
Do your kids remind you and Ajay of something about your childhood?
I think my daughter Nysa looks like my husband, her temperament is lot like Ajay's, but yes, she has got me as her mother (laughs).
You seem to be in an absolute comfort zone when you are working with Shah Rukh. Read somewhere that you never hesitate to say whatever you want to in front of him...
There is no hesitation, from my side there was never any hesitation right from the beginning. I am a pretty open person and I have always spoken my mind. There is rarely a filter in my throat to stop my brain. He is the same pretty much. He is very comfortable talking, I don't think you can stop him once he gets started. We have been friends, we have now shot seven films together. When you sit on a film set and work together for 100-150 days, it is a very different kind of bonding.
What is that quality in Shah Rukh that women find him so charming and what is it in you that men find you so irresistible?
What people find absolutely wonderful about Shah Rukh is that he is interested in people, he wants to know. When he asks a question, he waits for the reply. And, of course, he is the biggest flirt on the face of the earth because I think he wants all the women to fall in love with him (bursts into laughter). He genuinely wants women to do that and he really works very hard at it. Women go gaga over him and they are like, Oh, he's sooo cute', he has that ability in him. Honestly, I don't know what attracts men towards me. I think you must ask Shah Rukh about this (has a hearty laugh).

THE BIG FIGHT: Multiplexes Prefer Dilwale, Single Screens Choose Bajirao

Vickey Lalwani | 15 Dec 2015 2:17 PM

419

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani has staked its claim over single screens across the country, but it has lost the multiplex race to Rohit Shetty's Dilwale, which is releasing on the same day (December 18).

9xe has it that multiplexes in India will allot 60 per cent of their shows to Dilwale and only the remaining 40 per cent to Bajirao Mastani.
Wondering how and why? Here's a little background.

9xe had told you about Eros International booking a large number of single screens from December 18 onward in Bombay Circuit, Delhi, Rajasthan and many other places across India, imposing a condition on them that they'll not screen any other film for at least a week.

The production house had made single-screen owners sign an exclusive contract in this regard during the release of Tanu Weds Manu Returns. They distributed that film on the condition that the theatres would screen only Bajirao Mastani when it releases (Shah Rukh Vs Deepika War Gets Nastier, Sept 23).
ack to the present. Well, that 'deal' has backfired now.

With most single screens deciding to abide by the clause they signed with Eros -- mainly because they are legally bound -- PVR, the distributor of Dilwale, has stepped in to do some damage control. And quite a damage control this is.

Being the largest multiplex chain in India, PVR, we hear, has been able to convince most of the other players in their business to favour Dilwale over Bajirao Mastani.

Let's see how Bhansali and Eros react to this salvo fired at them.

Shah Rukh Khan: Dilwale' Has an Inbuilt Promise of Attracting Everyone

MUMBAI " As usual, he admits to fatigue before a release and wryly shrugs off a query about any pre-excitement. "Kaun si excitement, yaar (What excitement)?" he wryly grins. "Sirf thakaan hai (There is only fatigue)!" Shah Rukh Khan is back with "Dilwale," another home production full of entertainment, and he talks about the film, and his approach to cinema and life in a no-holds-barred chat.

Excerpts from the interview:

Q: The marketing blitz this time is uncommonly huge.

A: It's like this: "PK," "Bajrangi Bhaijaan," "Batman," "Superman," my film " I call them all superhero films, as they have an inbuilt promise of attracting everyone. I just feel realistically that since my film is a product that so many buy without watching " unlike a shirt or a watch " and there is no return policy either, the audience has to be told that this is what I am giving them, especially because I am the producer.

The audience will come anyway, so it is important that we explain all so that they do not feel cheated. Sometimes, they may not come at once, but, if the film is good, like a "Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai" or "Chak De! India," it will pick up.

I always say that films are a great leveller. So my job is to INFORM people what they are going to get. Somewhere, there will be this person accumulating a thousand rupees to watch my film with his family, and he needs to know what "Dilwale" is about by being told, "See, we have made this film from our heart, so now you decide if you want to watch it."

Q: At 50, you still do not look your age.

A: I think that by God's grace I have a plus point " I have a younger frame, so I look like a boy. My son and I in t-shirts look similar. My face too is boyish. I am frugal with my food and drink, don't have a habit of sweets, and even do a bit of exercise, so, in my completely disorganized way, there is this strange sense of organization.

Q: Kajol too is looking amazingly young.

A: Kajol is the exact opposite " she is completely organized. Plus, she is honest, always happy, frank to the point of being called ill-mannered, because she has a pure heart, and is open and upfront. She looks a bit eccentric, has no demands, and is not ambitious. And all that is seen on her face!

Q: How would you describe your 25-year journey?

A: I am from theater and television and came in wrongly assuming that popular cinema and all we do in it is not creative! I remember Hema Malini scolding me for giving her the wrong impression that I was a serious actor (Grins and imitates the actress chiding him!). "You did not tell me that you can dance!" she said when she saw my "Chamatkar" and "Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman" before her "Dil Aashna Hai" released. I told her, you never asked me! (Laughs)

I thus learned early that it was easy to be serious or create a definite character, as in "Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa." But it was tough to convince yourself to do all the standard things a hero has to, like taking off his shirt, falling on his face to raise laughs, and behaving like I did in "Om Shanti Om" with the heroine! I am an urban and educated guy, and I realized that the fantastic part of acting was more difficult than doing a "Chak De! India" or a "Swades." I was not at all comfortable singing "Iss Jahaan Ki Nahin Hai Tumhari Ankhen" in "King Uncle," for example.

But for someone who became a star and suddenly realized it one day, I seriously think that perhaps I do not deserve all my stardom. It's a tough cross to bear. I am, I think, a conscientious person, so I keep feeling, "Have I done enough work to deserve this? Perhaps I do not have such a body of work? There are huge hoardings of mine everywhere; I am called "Baadshah Khan" and King Khan," and I am invited to meet heads of nations. I am a kind of ambassador of India.

So now, I have finally decided that I do not deserve all this now, I should work in such a way that perhaps at the end of my career, I should feel I deserved all this! That's very important for me! My son too feels the same way, that he should deserve the good things he gets and not get them just because he is my son.

Q: You are blending smaller films with big movies now.

A: Yes, I want to do two to three films now if possible. I set up Red Chillies as a production house and studio 12 years ago, and I had to put it on a sound footing, so I did a lot of big films where I spared no expense to make the best possible movie. That also took up a lot of my time, as I was hands-on in everything. Now I have got a crack team, and, if I do everything like before, I will be wasting their time, because they are so good. So I just stick to the creatives and call them over to tell them what I want and then leave them to do the job. So I have a great time with my other activities and go with my kids for matches and so on.

For a 150-strong company, however, I still need to do that biggie like "Happy New Year" and "Dilwale." But I now want to also do those small movies that can be shot in 60 to 70 days instead of, say, 140, because I love those kind of films. I always loved doing a "Raju..." or a "Kabhi Haan..." and that's where "Fan" and "Raees" come in. Now Aanand Rai has come to me with the character of a dwarf, and that's very interesting. You see, I cannot WRITE a film for me. But I love such films. So I need to keep a balance.

Also people expect things from you, and you must give it to them. Aditya Chopra was going to make "Auzaar," a hard-hitting action drama, with me. But he changed his mind stating that people loved me as a romantic hero. He then made "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" and continued making romantic films with me!

Honestly, I must tell you that some offbeat directors I respect come to me and want to make my kind of 200-crore film with me! I tell them I want to make their kind of cinema, and I will be good at it. If they tell me that they want to make a love story differently, I am game, because nobody knows love better than me! (Grins)

Q: There are all kinds of speculations about your price.

A: Let me tell you something very clearly. I have never been a co-producer taking some hissa' (part) of the profits. As an actor, I have never taken a territory as fees, and my price is decided, come Adi, Karan or anyone else, AFTER a film is made. I am an actor. I am very clear that I am not saleable " I am priceless! You cannot buy me. That's been a fixed rule for 25 years!

And the logic is very simple. As a Red Chillies man, I know that the producer takes all the risks, and he must get all the profits. I lost money on "Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani" and "Asoka," my first two productions, and just broke even with "Chalte Chalte."

Yes, I love the good life, so I make money from television, ads, by doing shows and by dancing at functions. But I put whatever I have made from films back into movies.
