Highest Bollywood Grosser of 2015
Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan is currently the highest grosser of the year - both in India and Overseas. Released in theatres during Eid this year, the Kabir Khan directed film collected Rs 321 crore in India and Rs 186 crore overseas.
With 2 months to go, 2015 has 4 big Hindi films lined up for release. Salman's Prem Ratan Dhan Payo releases during Diwali, followed by Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone's Tamasha in the last week of November.
Hate Story 3 has taken the internet world by storm, what with the theatrical trailer receiving more than 17 million views in just 12 days after its release. It has even beaten the view count of Salman's PRDP (15.3 million). At the box office though, Hate Story 3 isn't really a contender to be the highest grosser of the year. It would be a huge success if it manages to collect Rs 100 crore or more.
2015 will end with a bang. Two massive films - Sanjay Leela Bhansali's super-ambitious magnum opus Bajirao Mastani and Shah Rukh Khan's multi-starrer Dilwale - are scheduled to release on the same day, which will affect the business of both films. To recover costs, the combined business of the two films will have to be in excess of Rs 325 crore (domestic).
To sum up, among all the films that are scheduled to release this year, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has the best chance to beat Bajrangi Bhaijaan. For Dilwale to emerge as the top grosser of the year, it would take something extraordinary. A film as entertaining as 3 Idiots' and even then it would need Bajirao Mastani to be rejected by the audience - something that happened last time when SRK's Om Shanti Om and Bhansali's Saawariya clashed at box office. Unlike 2007, Salman with Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Aamir with PK (last year) have set the bar way too high for anything less than good' films to be the highest grossers.
Between the 1989 to 2014 period (a total of 24 years), Salman has dominated 8 of those years, Aamir Khan has delivered the highest grosser for 6 years, SRK 5 times, Hrithik Roshan has done it thrice and Sunny Deol (who was a huge star in the 90s) has delivered the HGOTY twice.
Would it be safe to call 2015 as Salman's year once again, giving him his 9th highest grosser of the year in 25 years? Or can Dilwale surprise, even though the odds are stacked against the SRK starrer?
With 2 months to go, the industry would be hoping all 5 major films (including Hate Story 3) perform well enough to surpass expectations.
