Media and awareness was much less in those days compared to today.

Having said that, Manisha koirala is a nice person.

Manisha being a foreigner was never really that apparent as she acted very well and spoke hindi more naturally than many. Not to mention that she didnt look all that different from other Indians thought she was very pretty in her own unique way.

I never cared that Manisha was foreigner ever. Firstly she spoke Hindi well and did some very good movies with a strong roles. Bombay, Dil Se and 1942 a love story are one of my most favourite movies.

Manisha is Nepali, which is in the same geographic area as India - I think people who are from South Asia are generally not called foreigners. I mean yes technically she is a foreigner, but South Asia has such a deep connected history that nobody would actually call another a "foreigner".
Even today Jacqueline Ferndanez isn't called a foreigner, because she from Sri Lanka...and You dont see anyone calling Fawad Khan a foreigner, they'll say he's Pakistani...but they won't say "foreigner"...
I think the word foreign is reserved for the likes of Katrina or anyone who is outside of South Asia.

because She's a desi?
I hardly see the difference between Pakistanis, Sri Lankans, Bangaladeshi, Indians, and Nepalis in America. We are all DESI... after all.
