Come Christmas and two big releases will be clashing " Rohit Shetty's Dilwale (starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol) and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Bajirao Mastani (starring Deepika Padukone). But whenever any film has clashed with a SRK film, the other film has been the loser. Says a source, "SRK has a formidable reputation of beating his rivals at the boxoffice. Right from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which clashed with Amitabh Bachchan-Govinda starrer Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998) to Mohabbatein and Mission Kashmir (2000). While Veer Zaara triumphed over Akshay Kumar's Aitraaz (2004) Salman Khan's Jaan-E-Mann released on Diwali with SRK's Don (2006) and SRK again won that particular box-office battle. One of the biggest losers was perhaps Bhansali when he released his Ranbir Kapoor-Sonam Kapoor starrer Saawariya with Shah Rukh's Om Shanti Om (2007). Saawariya was trounced and OSO went on to become the highest-grossing Hindi film at the time of its release." In recent times, Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ) clashed with Ajay Devgn's Son of Sardar (SOS). While SOS garnered '105 crore, JTHJ made '200 crore. Smaller films like Damadamm and Tell Me Oh Kkhudaa, of course, have been crushed by the Rock SRK when they clashed with Ra.One. Chennai Express (made '227 crore at the BO) clashed with and Akshay Kumar-Imran Khan-Sonakshi Sinha Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara (2013), which is said to have made '61 crores. While producer Ekta Kapoor made a valiant attempt to rescue her flailing film OUATIMD by some aggressive marketing and promotions, CE created a stampede with Shah Rukh spearheading the promotional campaign and going to town with it. Next year will see one of the biggest clashes with SRK's Raees taking on Salman's Sultan on Eid. It will be interesting to see how it will play out as Salman's stakes have risen considerably from his Jaan-E-Maan days. |
