Drishyam Review

Drishyam Review:

Drishyam is an upcoming thriller drama film directed by Nishikant Kamat. The film stars Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran and Tabu in the lead roles. It is an official remake of a Malayalam film of the same name. Drishyam is scheduled to release on 31 July 2015.

Drishyam is a remake of the Malayalam film by the same name, which was directed by Jeethu Joseph. The same film was then made in Kannada as DRISHYA, and also in Telugu as DRUSHYAM. It is only recently that the film was made in Tamil language as well titled PAPANASAM, which starred the legendary Kamal Haasan.

Lets proceed to Drishyam Hindi movie review.

Drishyam Movie Review: Story

Drishyam tells the story of Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) who belongs to a middle class, running a cable TV business. His life revolves around his family consisting of his wife Nandini Vijay Salgaonkar (Shriya Saran) and his daughter (Ishita Dutta). They are living a happy life, till one day they have to face a terrible incident. His elder daughter was being assaulted by a boy named Sam in the school camp. He plants a hidden camera in the washroom and got her video. Then he demands sexual favour from her in return of MMS being deleted. Upon hearing this she raged with anger and killed him by hitting a rod. Sam was the only son of the IG Meera Deshmukh (Tabu).

Vijay then made a master plan that will help his family from the clutches of the police. After this begins the cat and mouse game between Vijay and Meera. Will Vijay be able to protect his family? Will he be able to prove himself inncoent? Watch the film to know.

Drishyam Review: Direction, Editing, Screenplay

The story of Drishyam is such that it keeps the audience guessing about what is going to happen next. As such the screenplay is very engaging and entertaining. This is a completely nail biting tale and has you hooked to it. The climax, which reveals the truth about the entire case, is shocking. The dialogues are natural. Overall, the writers (Jeetu Joseph) have done a commendable job.

Nishinaknt Kamat direction is exceptional. He makes the narrative engaging from the start to the end and extracts fine performances from his cast. He does total justice to the film's exceptional script and his direction is spot on. However, his narrative style may only appeal more to the city-based class audience.

Editing is top notch. You will not lose interest even though the pace is a little slower. Vishal Bharadwaj music is very good. The background score lifts many scenes in the movie. The cinematography is simple yet so effective.

Drishyam Review: Star Performances

' Ajay Devgan, it would seem, was born to play this role. He is absolutely extraordinary as Vijay and breathes fire in the scenes of confrontation with IG Meera (Tabu). He is suitably mellow in the romantic scenes. This is one of the best ever performances of Ajay Devgan in his entire career and he would be a strong contender this year for the best actor award for this film.

' Tabu plays the role of Meera (a police officer) with flair and gets a haunting quality to her silence. Her beauty is such in the film that it reflects her state of mind. Her happiness, anger and pain speaks through her eyes.

' Shriya Saran as Nandhani in the film, is great. Beautiful, innocent and smooth, she is better than most of her ungrateful roles.

What's Good:

Deadly combo of Ajay-Tabu
Flawless Direction
Gripping Story
Editing
Unexpected Climax
Screenplay

What's Bad:

Limited Appeal

Drihsyam Review: Last Word

On the whole, Drishyam is a powerful action-emotional thriller which boasts of equally powerful dialogues and absolutely power-packed performances. The climax will leave you in shock and disbelief. Don't miss this edge to seat thriller.

As for Mohanlal, he is excellent in looking innocent and gives off that very simple humble look when required (*SPOILER for old movie**my favourite is the scene in 20-20 where after he is acquitted, he changes from a simple guy to don mode😆)

But I must say that I like Kamal Hassan as well in story-based roles. It is just that he has gone crazy in recent years with his vision and makes some 'different' movies to stroke his own ego..

Sure, do watch it and let me know how you liked it.

Yes Mohanlal is a perfect blend of an actor who can do comedy and serious roles with the same ease. Even I loved that scene from 20-20, especially the way he wears his chappals in slow motion - an awesome scene with very subtle expressions by Mohanlal 👍🏼!

Kamal Hassan used to be really good, but nowadays he tries too hard to 'advertise' himself. He wants the entire movie to be centered around him in every possible way which ruins the quality of a movie as content and story is compromised to accomodate his antics (like singing, dancing, unique makeup/costumes, etc).

Drishyam movie review: Tabu steals the show, Ajay Devgn is made only for Rohit Shetty masala flicks

Drishyam, Visuals can be Deceptive. Yes, indeed it can be deceptive, the initial look and feel of Drishyam starring Ajay Devgn and Shriya Saran was not that of an extra-ordinary thriller. But turns out the movie directed by Nishikant Kamat is an average version of the original Malayalam block buster starring super star Mohanlal.

The movie is about a cable operator (Ajay Devgn) and the plot revolves around his loving family based in Goa. Although he is not an educated man, the fact that he is not one is brought up again and again that you might want to pull your hair in all directions.Although the protagonist goes by what is morally correct and preaches about it too. But when it comes to saving his family and her daughter when she is involved in an MMS scandal is scandalous.

The first half of the movie deals with how the lead character bonds with his family, hw much of a movie freak he is rather how obsessed he is with typical Bollywood flicks. The casting has gone wrong for the movie. Ajay Devgn constantly tries to deliver a mix of a funny yet serious father figure while Shreya Saran is barely making any difference in the whole movie. When put both the actors together it could be called a regular movie minus the thrill. If Ajay is trying to prove his acting skills with this movie, he needs to rethink about it. Ajay might be apt for Rohit Shetty masala movies, but he is not carved for something like this. READ: Drishyam: Mohanlal wishes Ajay Devgn and Tabu good luck for the upcoming flick)

Although there are not many songs in the movie, it was plain boring. The movie starts getting interesting post the intermission when the whole mystery falls into place. Tabu and Rajat Kapoor are some very promising characters to look forward to in the movie along with the supporting cast. If you wish to watch the movie watch it for Tabu.

Those who have seen the Malayalam version must steer clear of this movie.Ajay can never match up to Mohanlal's performance.
Otherwise it could be called an average Bollywood thriller.

Drishyam quick movie review: Ajay Devgn and Tabu's film is an electrifying, edge of the seat thriller!

So, this week's big release is Jeethu Joseph's hit Malayalam film remake starring the Vijaypath actors. And we bring to you our reviewer's first opinion about this film...

Ajay Devgn and Tabu starrer Drishyam will be out this Friday. While this movie has been made in five other languages inclusive of the Hindi version. The Tamil version, Papanasam featuring Kamal Haasan released just a few weeks ago and fared very well at the box office too. So, how does the Hindi film fare? BollywoodLife, editor Tushar Joshi is one of the few who is watching this film before the rest of us and here's what he has to say about Nishikant Kamat's newest outing...

"Drishyam is no ordinary thriller. It uses several elements of the genre (thriller) to create a well crafted riveting story. Ajay Devgn plays Vijay a cable operator who's a loving father to two daughters and a doting husband. Always on the righteous track he believes in supporting what is morally correct. Things take a turn for the worse when Vijay's daughter is caught in a MMS scandal. The young boy who tapes her is killed by Vijay's daughter in a freak mishap. The first half spends a lot of time building up the ambience and creating the bond between Vijay and his family.

The narrative is simple and there isn't much drama until we reach the middle half just before the interval. The best part of the first half comes pre interval with Tabu's (Meera Deshmukh) stellar entry as a coo covered in shades of grey. The second half is where the story will pick up and the jigsaw puzzle falls into place. Ajay's performance is nuanced with subtleties and the kids play their parts with utmost sincerity. Those who have seen the Malayalam version might know where the climax leads, but for me director Nishikant Kamat has me on the edge of my seat."

Drishyam Movie Review

Meena Iyer, TNN, Jul 30, 2015, 01.09PM IST
CRITIC'S RATING: 4.0/5
AVG READERS' RATING: 4.4/5
Review This Movie Watch Trailer
Cast: Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Rajat Kapoor, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta
Direction: Nishikant Kamat
Genre: Thriller
Duration: 2 hours 43 minutes

Drishyam has what it takes to 'hook' the audience

Story: In an earnest attempt to protect his teenage daughter's modesty, a committed family man gets embroiled in a heinous crime. Will the cops blow his cover?

Review: Inspired by Japanese crime-writer, Keigo Higashino's novel The Devotion of Suspect X, Drishyam(translates as illusion) was originally adapted in Malayalam. That version went on to become a blockbuster, paving the way for copies. The latest is, Nishikant Kamat's Bollywood adaptation that has adequate promise.

The story revolves around the fourth-standard school drop-out Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay) who lives in Goa with his wife Nandini(Shriya) and their two daughters. He is a movie buff who runs a cable-video business. Crazy about cinema; he laughs, cries, plots and plans or for that matter even allows films to dictate his sexual desire. All in all, Vijay has a blissed-out existence. Till his teenage daughter Anu(Ishita) goes for a inter-school nature camp. There she encounters Sameer Deshmukh(Risabh Chaddha)the son of IG, Meera Deshmukh(Tabu). The brat shoots a video-clip of the naive girl in the shower. On their return home, crafty Sam seeks to trade 'favours' from Anu. The teenagers are negotiating when an untoward incident occurs, leaving Anu stumped and her family in a fix.

The film gathers momentum as an interesting chase ensues between the cops headed by Sam's mum, the Inspector General of Police and Anu's father, Vijay.

Though the first half (that could do with a 10-minute trim) feels sluggish, the pace kicks in when Tabu, the hard-nosed cop enters. Since all evidence from the time her son goes missing, points to the Salgaonkars, she bays for their blood, like a wounded lioness.

Interestingly enough, the unassumingly 'innocent' Vijay matches her with his quick wit and sharp moves.

A suspense drama with a nail-biting finish, Drishyam holds the viewer by the eyeballs till its' engaging climax.

Ajay, who is the prey here, shines in his role of the protective father. While his family definitely needed to be cast in a more discerning fashion, half a star in this review is reserved for Tabu, who is outstanding as his predator.

Drishyam Review

Drishyam Movie Poster

Rating: 2.5/5 Stars (Two and half stars)

Star Cast: Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Shriya Saran, Rajat Kapoor

Director: Nishikant Kamat

What's Good: Regurgitating a tried & tested template of a successful Malayalam film, Drishyam becomes a gripping, layered watch in it's second half. Tabu is brilliant, & Rajat Kapoor complements her ably with a subtle act.

A riveting sequence in Drishyam' reminds one of the (lost) brilliance of Nishikant Kamath; when the police use strong arm tactics & blatant intimidation on a family of four to make them confess; raw & harrowing, this scene stands out for it's impact in a barely above average narration.

What's Bad: Patchy, forced humor that plays to the gallery strikes out of tune notes in a powerful script. The biggest flaw of Drishyam' is it's unidirectional treatment- a story that hinges on the conflict of truth versus lie hardly ever evolves. It's almost like the skeleton of a masterpiece has been hastily pulled out & cast for a populist product.

Secondly, Ajay Devgn comes across as surprisingly unfeeling in some scenes. But this flaw perhaps lies in the writing. It's almost as if the character has not been given any dimensions, feelings & aspects of a real person.

Loo break: Yes, plenty of scope in the first half to do that!

Drishyam' is the story of Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn),a semi literate, self-employed cable operator in a small, picturesque town in Goa. He lives happily in a rather large & well-decorated house surrounded by a typical garden and an attractive wife. Father to two daughters, he loves watching movies all night & takes on local corrupt police officers sassily in verbal duels. He is fairly popular amidst local folk. Unfortunately, Vijay is also a bit crass, not above hinting at his libido over the dining table in the presence of his teenage daughter (Ishita Dutta).

Life takes a drastic turn when his teenage daughter & wife end up killing a young, lascivious boy who threatens them with universal shaming. Unfortunately, the boy turns out to be the son of Goa's Inspector General, Meera Deshmukh (Tabu).

Drishyam' focuses on the planned smart decimation of evidence by Vijay to protect his family; survival instincts honed to razor sharpness. The police chase, investigate & harass, even as the IG takes it upon herself to break this middle class, average man & his family. Their frustrations & edginess contrast well as Tabu, Rajat Kapoor & Ajay spark their common scenes with tension & emotion.

Eventually, the common man prevails; and surprisingly, isn't shown to regret the unplanned death of a young man at all. Only in the penultimate scene, is a reiteration carried out of his justification.

With a deafeningly loud background score, and repeated reiterations of why,how and what (to explain and re explain the plot), by the penultimate scene, you only focus on the brightly lit, red EXIT sign.

Ajay Devgn and Shriya Saran in a still from movie Drishyam'

Drishyam Review: Script Analysis

Based on a masterpiece, in which Mohanlal's controlled, conflicted performance to director Jeethu Joseph's edge of the seat treatment holds your attention throughout, Drishyam' in Hindi falters in it's narration. No depths & layers are explored here. Dialogues remind you of TV serials (that's how clichd they are!). A patchy, unremarkable approach to a brilliant script, this film leaves you with a feeling of how much more it could have been!

As an adaptation of plot points, Drishyam' is perfect. But in adding range and fleshing out the film's story, it's patchy. Quite a few characters come across as cardboard cut outs.

Drishyam Review: Star Performance

Tabu steals the show here. She is intense, controlled & emotional in the right doses. Rajat Kapoor is subtle & convincing as her grieving, anxious husband. Ajay Devgn plays the family man in control pretty well, but you wonder where are the conflicts & contradictions that a man in his predicament would be in.

Drishyam Review: Music, Direction

I believe the weakest link of Drishyam' is it's direction. In handling stellar material & a pitch perfect original script (by Jeethu Joseph), Nishikant has fared as average at best. Using clichs and reiterations so many times, the film's core tension is diluted at way too many points.

Sameer Phaterpekar has managed a convincing, melancholic score; Dum Ghutta Hain by Rekha Bharadwaj & Rahat Fateh Ali Khan stands out in a consistent soundtrack.

Drishyam Review: The Last Word

For an engaging battle of wits, watch this film. The second half, thankfully a direct adaptation of the original, also draws you in as audience, making you think of right and wrong, justice & fairness. Also do catch it if you are an Ajay Devgn or Tabu fan. Otherwise, for those who like watching quality films on crime & passion, I would rather leave the decision to you.

Drishyam movie review: This film is a must watch for Ajay Devgn and Tabu's electrifying performances!

The film will release in theatres this Friday. Here's BollywoodLife's review!

What's it about:

A remake of the 2013 Malayalam release of the same name, Drishyam stars Ajay Devgn as Vijay a righteous family man living in Goa. Vijay runs a cable TV business and believes in always supporting the truth. His honest nature often gets him in trouble with a local cop for whom corruption is just a way of life. Shriya Saran plays his doting wife who has two daughters and is meek and timid by nature. Circumstances change against their family when Inspector General Meera Deshmukh's (Tabu) son Sam happens to meet Vijay's eldest daughter during a school picnic and things take turn for the bad. A freak accident involving him lands the family in a soup where Deshmukh and her army of cops are in a raging battle to convict Vijay and his family of being responsible for her sons mysterious disappearance. Will Vijay be able to save his family or will he crumble under the pressure ? Drishyam is a tight thriller that has a very solid second half and an engaging climax.

What's hot:

Nishikant Kamat keeps the premise simple. There are no gimmicks and tricks used beside the script and the terrific ensemble cast of Ajay and Tabu. It is a performance heavy film and Ajay makes sure he goes for the kill in every scene. As Vijay he is not only believable but also immensely likeable. His patience and ability to put his family first before his own self makes you root for him till the very end. The second half is when the story picks up, thanks to Tabu who gives an electrifying performance as IG Meera Deshmukh. Her entry sequence has more drama than the entire film put together. She makes you hate Meera, but also empathise with her for the situation she is in. Her scenes with Ajay are the best. They both perform a lot with them eyes and that piercing gaze.

What's not

The first half is weak. There isn't much that happens early on. A lot of time is spent establishing how close knit the family is and showcasing their love for each other. A song pops up somewhere in the middle. Shriya Saran doesn't live up to her role and goes over the top in a few scenes. Also Kamat seems to have a fetish for slow-mo, each time he wants to create drama, he amps up the background score and makes Tabu walk in slow motion. The pace slackens a bit before the climax and a lot of time is spent on giving us some close frames of Ajay's face without serving any purpose.

What to do:

Drishyam is worth a watch. It has a strong engaging second half that will have you on the edge of your seat. Watch it for some terrific performances from Ajay and Tabu.

The Pinkvilla Review - Drishyam

July 30, 2015 Team Pinkvilla 15078 reads 4 comments

Drishyam is an exotic dish that might simmer for over 2 hours 40 minutes, but Jeetu Joseph's story has the most lip-smacking recipe of a delicious thriller. After crawling for the entire first half of its runtime, it puts on the speedy wheels on the narrative which doesn't look back once it picks pace. Nishikant Kamat uses his smarts to adapt to pan-India sensibility but has remained largely faithful to Joseph's story. If you have watched Papanasam and Drishyam in Malayalam, Kamat's film doesn't alter much but is more nimble, crisper and is very sharply cut.

Joseph's story is never a whodunit. It's always about how it is done. And, it is done darn well for sure! Perfectly toned, never overdramatic, the film doesn't use the regular clichs to keep you hooked. This unpredictability of Drishyam, is its biggest win.

Vijay Salgaonkar lives a regular middle-class life in a small village in Goa. Watching movies, making Sunday trips to Panaji with family, is his routine life and Salgaonkars prefer it boring. Their sublime existence is disrupted by a miscreant who is killed accidentally. The deceased turns out to be the son of Goa's Inspector General of Police. Life is mayhem as the khakhi-clad mother tears the town apart to hunt down her son. But for Vijay, his prerogative is protecting his family. As the chauthi-fail man leaps to any lengths for it, Drishyam becomes a chase-game where the one who outsmarts the other wins.

The film is beautifully shot with picturesque locales of Goa lighting up frames. The camera movements have the drama of a thriller but the film avoids stock formulas to get attention. That definitely isn't the idea Kamat subscribes to. Early on in the film, Vijay who is a movie-buff dismisses a rightly sketched action scene as rubbish because it uses sounds to create drama when nothing that great is happening on screen. The idea of using noise to depict something is a mind-game, which is furthered in the film when Vijay takes a cue from the same ideology in creating the day of the mishap. The day's recreation is crafted so neatly that one must applaud Joseph on his adept writing.

Not many films will compel you the way Drishyam does. It keeps you guessing, never letting the fun of it run out. Sriram Raghavan's Johnny Gaddar was the last film of the same genre that had the same drift. This film is a welcome breather after years for those who relish films that demand you to jolt your gray matter.

Once the second hour of the film strikes, you are so enamored by what unspools on screen that you include yourself in the guessing. But the story doesn't allow you to rise above being a mere spectator, by keeping its wits higher than you can imagine. It is not often that a cine goer in this country is able to muster up that level of inclination or involvement for a story but this film achieves that.

The only problem with the film is its length. At 160 minutes, it is far too long and unnecessarily so. The narrative wastes too much time in setting ground for drama. Kamat's agenda to show how much Vijay loves his family could easily have been curtailed. There are superfluous love-making references, Sunny Leone jokes to lighten the tense mood. Drishyam is better off without such distractions. Its tension is its forte.

Unlike most thrillers, Drishyam's unpredictability never gets mundane. There are negligible slips in the screenplay which is why Kamat holds on to his film unwaveringly.

With due credit given to the story, a large part of this film is about its actors. Tabu and Ajay who return together on screen after 17 years are top notch players. There is a sense of ordinariness in the way they carry themselves. Ajay's brooding grit is matched by Tabu's confident canter. They are Bollywood's two most gifted performers who are pitted against each other. There is gravitas, panache and immediacy in both their performances, bringing out correctly the desperate situation they are embroiled in. The characterisation is flesh-and-blood real and the casting is even better. Drishyam wouldn't have its striking edginess without the right blend of both. Tabu with her ruthless face and Ajay with his unbreakable intensity reign. The scene where Tabu is introduced from behind a shadow is enough to convey that roles have been reversed. Its the infallible lady Singham at job.

The climax is the film's pinnacle and when the last scene plays out, you won't miss whistling to Ajay's Singham moves. With this Devgn ensures his fans know that he is still capable making them hoot minus the blaring music, gravity-defying stunts and aata-majhi-satakli-punchlines. For those who had signed him off after Action Jackson, Devgn will ensure you rise and applaud in the final scene here. He got his swag intact, sans stunts, letting his eyes do the talking.

Drishyam is nifty and is all about the nail-bitingness that edge-of-the-seat stuff are made of.

We give this luminous film a 80% on the Pinkvilla Movie Meter.
