Quite soon into the film, Prabhudeva's character says : should I show or tell'? In a dance movie, is that even a question?
As it turns out, the showing perks up ABCD 2. A little. When Prabhudeva is on the floor, there is a snap and pop, even though his moves are familiar. A couple of numbers do crackle. There are two dancers in here who are amazing. But the rest of them, and their sequences, turn into the seen-this-so-what's-new glaze. And when the film stops to look around for a story, which it does much too frequently in its two- and-a-half-hour run time, it turns banal and listless.
A group of underdog hip-hop dancers, reviled for copying, want to resurrect their name. In the movie's beginning is its end. The only way a film like this can beat predictability is to deliver as many surprises as it can. But the writing department is the weakest : clichs abound as the characters whirl about frantically in an attempt to shed cardboard.
Prabhudeva reprises his good-natured coach Vishnu Sir from the 2013 ABCD', who believed anybody can dance: the original coasted on a bunch of unknown faces. The sequel has gone starry, with Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor: Dhawan is earnest and the slightly better dancer (his dancing skills have been evident in his previous outings) ; Shraddha Kapoor is beautifully toned and lissome and manages to execute a few steps well enough. But neither can match up to the real dancers when ranged alongside.
Post interval, the action moves to Las Vegas, and we are treated to many standard aerial shots of glittery skyscrapers as our little troupe goes about its way, trying to deal with a lead character's dodgy disappearance, and an accident which allows for the return of blonde bombshell Lauren Gottlieb, who gets a full dance to herself. But these are minor excitements which manage to lift the film only momentarily.
Much of ABCD2 is inspired by real life: a Mumbai group made it to the world hip-hop championships a few years ago under tough circumstances. The film sets out to prove that all of us can do with second chances, and that Indians can do hip-hop as well as the rest of the world (which we can easily believe given the astonishing degree of expertise we see on our reality shows) But a dance movie needs to electrify. That's missing: all the I-love-my-India drippiness overwhelms the choreography. And why is it so long? It just goes on and on.

Ramleela collected over 15.85 crores on Day 1 i.e. on its 1st Friday

On the other hand, new release Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram Leela has opened splendidly at the box office. It took a grand Day 1, of Rs 151 million (Rs 15.10 crore) net, despite controversies and protests regarding the name Ram Leela. The weekend remained strong with collections in the range of Rs 170 million (Rs 17 crore) net on Saturday and approximately Rs 189.4 million (Rs 18.94 crore) net on Sunday.

ABCD 2 Box Office Opening: Best start of 2015

2 min read

Varun Dhawan has done it again. The presence of the most bankable star amongst the new generation of actors, has ensured that ABCD 2 has taken the best opening of the year so far.

At most centres, the opening of ABCD 2 was better than Akshay Kumar's Gabbar Is Back and the occupancy at multiplexes was better than a multiplex film like Dil Dhadakne Do'.

The average occupancy in the morning was around 50-55%. In Mumbai city the opening was lower at around 40-45%, but that was only because of heavy rains in the city.

The opening was excellent in Mysore circuit, two cities like Bangalore and Mangalore have opened very well in the morning.

At major cities, the start is better than all Hindi films that have released so far this year, including the likes of Roy, Gabbar Is Back and Dil Dhadakne Do.

The first day business is almost certain to be above the 10 crore mark and there is a possibility that business could touch 15 crore, if the film picks up towards the end of the day.

  • ABCD 2 - 55%
  • Tanu Weds Manu Returns - 45%
  • Gabbar Is Back - 45% (partial holiday)
  • Roy - 38%
  • Detective Byomkesh Bakshi - 35% (holiday)
  • Badlapur - 30%
  • Tevar - 30%
  • Dil Dhadakne Do - 25%
  • Baby - 25%
  • Bombay Velvet - 20%
  • Piku - 18%
  • Shamitabh - 15%
  • NH10 - 15%
  • Mr X - 10%
  • Dum Laga Ke Haisha - 8%

ABCD 2 Takes Biggest Opening Of Year Till Date

ABCD 2 has taken the biggest opening of the year by beating Gabbar Is Back by a quite a distance. Below are the average occupancies in morning shows.

1. ABCD 2 - 50%

2. Gabbar - 40%

3. Tanu Weds Manu Returns - 35%

4. Roy - 32.5 %

5. Dil Dhadakne Do - 30%

6. Badlapur - 27.5%

7. Baby - 25%

-. Tevar - 25%

8. Ek Thi Leela - 22.5%

There is a difference in the number of screens with ABCD 2 at 2550 screens and Gabbar Is Back at 3300 but the occupancies do favour ABCD 2 which should be enough for it to record the biggest opening day of the year. Of course it does depend on how the rest of the day goes but it is looking very good for ABCD 2 at the moment.

Remo Desouza's #ABCD2 is having an extraordinary climax song.Superbly choreographed n sprinkled with nationalistic fervour.Applause worthy!!

.#BezubaanPhirSe wafts in at crucial time in the film and its another song that's brilliantly choreographed n has a lot of Heart #ABCD2

.#ABCD2 is a watchable underdog story that surely entertains you with simple storytelling n emotion packed performances.

Varun Dhawan shines as an actor. When there r tears in his eyes,u know they r real. There's electricity in his body language! #ABCD2

Why Varun is v endearing? He's a team man.He lets every1 flower. The super dancers get their due n Dhawan emerges as a good leader!! #ABCD2

Shraddha Kapoor looks glamorous n dances really well. She's v likable. There's a complete shift in body lingo 4m past films.Imprssive! #ABCD2

The support dancers r very good n also pitch in interesting fun acting chops.Lauren looks really cool n dances brilliantly #ABCD2

On the flip side 3D isn't well done.Screenplay is ordinary n the film is long.Undue angles stretch the film 2 some extent. #ABCD2

All in all #ABCD2 is predictable but it entertains you for most parts n the climax sequence in itself is worth ur ticket price.Check it out!
