Dil Dhadakne Do review: Despite Ranveer-Priyanka, this cruise goes nowhere
Rohit Vats, Hindustan Times, New Delhi|
Updated: Jun 05, 2015 11:50 IST
Ranvceer Singh, Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar in Dil Dhadakne Do.

Film: Dil Dhadakne Do
Cast: Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Shefali Shah, Farhan Akhtar, Rahul Bose
Director: Zoya Akhtar
Rating: 2/5

Like Zoya Akhtar's previous film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dil Dhadakne Do is also about a trip that changes the travellers' perspective towards life. Just that this time the journey is long, less memorable, and screeching to a halt often.

The rich have their own set of problems and their lives are as miserable as any middle-class guy's life. This is the theme of a film which has the Mehras, led by a self-made business magnate Kamal Mehra (a golden-haired Anil Kapoor), at the helm of affairs. The family's 25-year-old son Kabir (Ranveer Singh) is expected to take over the business from his father, but he wants to add wings to his life: He's more keen on aviation, of all things. His elder sister Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra), we are told has a 'business acumen', but she couldn't claim the CEO's chair because she is married and the Mehra household is too fond of their male scion. Kamal's wife Neelam (Shefali Shah) is a sharp-tongued, insecure woman who is struggling hard to keep up with her husband's flamboyant image.

Kamal Mehra is a self made business tycoon.

The second branch of this 169-minute long saga features a free-spirited dancer Farah Ali (Anushka Sharma) and her roller-coaster romance with Kabir Mehra.

There is a third set too. This set of characters, who make Dil Dhadakne Do a crowded film, include Ayesha's patriarchal husband Manav (Rahul Bose) and her former best friend Sunny (Farhan Akhtar).

The Delhi-based Mehras look happy and content from outside, but their empire is crumbling. And unlike a conventional business family, what do they do to keep everything floating? Surprise, surprise! They plan a two-week long cruise trip to attract investors.

Just that they have no idea that this trip is about to change their perceptions forever. It's going to be a life-altering experience for the people who are buried under pressure to behave the way the society wants them to behave.

The cruise trip is also a business opportunity for the Mehra family.

The duo of Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti has come up with a story that deals with frivolous and almost non-existent issues. It's hard to believe that the rich and mighty of the Delhi society are so not connected to the ground realities. And even if they are so pretentious and pompous, it's highly improbable for them to be like this confused lot.

The central thread in itself is philosophically disturbing. Here's a family where everybody knows everybody's dark secrets, and they have been fairly quiet about it since the beginning. They seem to believe that this is how it's supposed to be. It appears that their brains are conditioned the way they are, and that means the absolute approval to the existing patriarchal values. Later, when it comes to personal freedom and making a choice, they keep pretending that they are taking a stand without doing anything about the wrongs already done. Kabir knows about his father's affairs and his mother's pathetic position in the family, yet he falls back on his father's shoulder when the family is neck- deep in choppy waters. Similarly, the miserable woman in the body of Neelam Mehra keeps speaking the same language as her husband. In fact, the regret in her expression is quite perceptible when she denies Kamal some playful bedtime moments. In short, most of the primary characters, except Priyanka Chopra's perhaps, are at ease with status quo, still they keep complaining.

Interestingly, a sequence in the film shows Farhan Akhtar indulging in a verbal battle with Rahul Bose over 'women's liberation'. It's weird, to say least, to see two men debating over giving more power to women, with the woman in their life, Priyanka Chopra, sobbing all through.

Youngsters and elders have different perspectives on almost every issue.

Woman, wake up, you run a business conglomerate and have just featured in a Forbes' list. This wasn't expected of you.

But this is not the only ill-conceived scene in the film. Kamal is admitted in the hospital and his wife tells him that she has always dreaded the day when he would leave her. She very dramatically says, "Tum mujhe bhool gaye Kamal". Within seconds Kamal promises to not tread the morally corrupt' path and she goes back to her usual self of a doting wife. No agony, no anger, no remorse, nothing.

Don't get me wrong. I am not against the family values imbibed in our culture, but such docile characters can't help the cause the director so proudly preaches through a dog Pluto (Aamir Khan's voice) in the film.

Will this cruise trip give the Mehras a chance to liberate their trapped souls?

The climax is another big let-down. On second thoughts, it's similar to many other sequences in films that build up just fine in the beginning, only to give it all up at the most critical time. The most interesting moments of DDD are completely out-of-sync with the rest of the film. I don't want to give out important plot twists but it's bizarre to see so called, educated' characters possessing the IQ of a toddler.

People, stop, think and you'd find a better way to resolve things.

There's another side to the film. There are scenes and smart one-liners which will crack you up. During one of the family counselling sessions, Anil Kapoor asks a disgruntled Priyanka Chopra in a thundering voice: Tum dono young ho, successful ho, Punjabi ho, squash khelte ho...fir problem kya hai? As if being Punjabi was the last requirement to be a happy wife!

Similarly, Rahul Bose sums up the essence of being Kamal Mehra in one sentence: If Lalit Sood is a vulture, then your father is a hawk. You can't describe a man better who employs his brother as the manager in his private limited, and who bargains with his son about a plane. But, these are very handful in comparison to average, clichd plots in the film.

Most of the primary actors come across as people desperate to have the upper hand, and Anil Kapoor is the winner of this race. Yes, his character is obsessed with himself but he is so over the top in some scenes that any commoner would call his bluff. His conversation with Parmeet Sethi over drinks is a demonstration of how to kill the other actor's relevance in the story'.

Dil Dhadakne Do Audio Jukebox

Anushka Sharma's cruise dancer's act needed some fine-tuning. Priyanka Chopra joins her in Girls like to swing' and the difference is evident. Priyanka Chopra is otherwise graceful, but her rolling eyes during Ranveer's heated exchange with his parents immediately brings down the temperature of the room and that restricts the tempo from rising to the optimum level.

If you can overlook the growth graph of Ranveer Singh's character, then he is the one to watch out for in DDD. He has played it gently and with a lot of energy. He has subdued himself at the right points and his comic timing is fantastic. Undoubtedly, he's the best of the lot. Farhan Akhar is a close second. Vikrant Massey also has a charming presence.

Though most of the shots are inside the cruise, the one shot that stands out is a top angle view of the cruise. This is a transition shot but it has been placed so effectively in the story that you cannot help but be a part of the party. It appears right after an emotional conversation between Ayesha and Sunny. The music of the film is another average fare.

There is hardly any takeaway from Dil Dhadakne Do and its characters are not likely to stay with you for long. Also, it would be hard for you and me to identify with the doubts and troubles of the morally ambiguous Mehra family. However, the film has a good starcast and that can dictate the game at the box office.

Dil Dhadakne Do Review: Priyanka, Ranveer shine in Zoya Akhtar's version of a Rajshri family drama

by Deepanjana Pal Jun 5, 2015 10:30 IST

At some point in the first half of Dil Dhadakne Do, you might find yourself wondering whether director Zoya Akhtar is pulling an elaborate con on the audience. When it begins, we're informed that our narrator is a dog named Pluto Mehra. This is not a slight upon Pluto's character. Pluto is literally a dog; an adorable bull mastiff to be precise, whose voice sounds distinctly like Aamir Khan's.

Pluto is the not-so-silent witness to the Mehra family's antics. This is why he is the one providing us running commentary while Kamal (Anil Kapoor), Neelu (Shefali Shah), Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) and Kabir (Ranveer Singh) go about making a mess of their thoroughly charmed lives.

However, you'll realise soon enough that you're seeing things that Pluto can't have witnessed. There are episodes unfolding at a kitty party in a restaurant, at a bar, by the pool on a cruise ship...and there is no Pluto in sight. Yet we see what's happening from a fly-on-the-wall perspective and invariably get a little voiceover from Pluto that explains the subtext of each scene.

That's when it struck this reviewer that Dil Dhadakne Do isn't a family drama as its trailer suggested, but a horror film. This is a movie about a talking dog whose spirit either possesses bartenders or wanders invisible as a ghost through the human world, and who plays the Mehra family like an expert puppeteer. Move over Chucky.

The reason Pluto's occult possibilities are thrilling as an idea is that outlandish as that plot might be, it's a darn sight more interesting than what actually transpires in Dil Dhadakne Do. Particularly pre-intermission, this 170-minute long film set on a cruise ship moves as slowly as a rowboat in the Pacific Ocean. The pace picks up in the second half, but by then you may already be wondering why you should care about any of the beautiful people holidaying in Turkey.

Akhtar has often drawn criticism for focusing her attention upon the privileged. However, that's not necessarily a failing. Being rich doesn't mean one is immune to sadness or pain and with good storytelling, shallow characters can be used to make insightful observations about how people think and behave. Akhtar has the talent to do this " we've seen her manage it in Luck By Chance and there were flashes of the same in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

For better or for worse, Dil Dhadakne Do quickly reveals itself to be a hipster version of a Sooraj Barjatya film. It's pretty but artificial, with a tissue-thin story told through flat characters played by gorgeous actors. Instead of Tuffy and his animal tribe with their ability to receive messages from from idols of Ram and Sita, we have the all-knowing Pluto. There is a token tomboy, some secret love, a couple of arranged marriages and many song-and-dance situations. All this culminates in a ludicrous climax that might make cruise companies unwilling to ever let an Indian family on board if they see this movie. The only difference is that Dil Dhadakne Do is set in Turkey and on a luxury cruise vessel while Rajshri Productions prefers kitschy, desi settings.

And because Dil Dhadakne Do has Farhan MARD' Akhtar in it, there's a pointed little lecture on how no woman is a man's possession. Journalists, rejoice. For his cameo, Akhtar plays one of us in Dil Dhadakne Do " he's a reporter who writes "depressing" stories, according to one of the characters " and while doing his bit for promoting feminism, he also defends journalists. Yay!

Brief applause-worthy moments aside, Dil Dhadakne Do is a frustrating film because there are a lot of interesting but unexplored ideas nested in its 170 minutes. Can a philandering control freak be a good husband after all? How toxic can gossip be? Is social standing a blindfold that keeps you from seeing the truth? Should you follow your dreams even if they're not sensible? If a marriage isn't working, does it mean that either the husband or wife has to be "bad" or can a marriage fall apart because two people simply aren't in love with each other? When all that matters to you is wealth, what happens when you're facing bankruptcy? How far will you go to protect your reputation in a tittering, hypocritical society?

I feel protective about Ranveer: Anushka Sharma

It was fantastic working with Anushka in Dil Dhadakne Do: Ranveer Singh

Anil Kapoor is a living legend: Ranveer Singh on his Dil Dhadakne Do co-star

Akhtar and Kagti have shown in their previous work that they're capable of delving sensitively into emotional situations. Unfortunately, in Dil Dhadakne Do, they stop frustratingly short of nuance and insight in both their plot and their characters.

What Dil Dhadakne Do lacks by way of storytelling, it tries to make up with star power. With all the A-listers in its cast, the film is like a celebrity pyjama party. Of them, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh are the two that really hold their own. Singh's Kabir, the lovable brat of the Mehra family, isn't the most complex character on paper, but the actor lends much-needed charm to a flimsy role with his performance. He's also got some cracking punch lines, which he delivers with superb dryness. Some of Dil Dhadakne Do's best scenes rely upon Singh's comedic talent to point out the shallowness of the privileged and the absurd humour that trickles through explosive confrontations.

Chopra plays Ayesha, the elder daughter who has quietly tried to make peace with an unsatisfying marriage and her parents paying more attention to her brother. Her need to keep a faade of happiness intact and the loneliness she feels as a daughter who is no longer considered family because she's married is something that many will relate to easily.

Much of the film is pivoted around Kamal Mehra's histrionics and Dil Dhadakne Do confirms that Kapoor has lost none of his talent for melodrama. He snarls, smooth-talks, and roars - and wears rather fetching checked, blue pants on the golf course. Shah as his wife is precisely what you expect a Delhi socialite to be - screechy, scheming and tremendously insecure. One of the biggest disappointments in the film is the careless way her story is wrapped up in Dil Dhadakne Do . Some of the minor characters, like Ayesha Raza as Ayesha and Kabir's gossipy aunt, are delightful.

For those who like the glossy world of fiction that was Akhtar's terrain in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dil Dhadakne Do may be just the lavish fix you want. If you're a fan of Luck By Chance, however, you may find yourself shedding a tear as you long for the director who so skilfully blended wickedness, style and insight into a heady, charming mix.

2015 has proved to be an average affair for Bollywood. Some big films like Tevar, Mr. X and Bombay
Velvet has disappointed a lot. While content driven films like NH 10,
Dam Laga ke Haisha and Badlapur were successful at the box office.

May was a welcome change for Bollywood
films. This month featured three successful films like Gabbar Is Back
(Hit), Piku (Super Hit), Tanu Weds Manu Returns (Blockbuster).

This Friday Dil Dhadakne Do has hit the screens. Itis an urban niche film whichis mainly targeted at metro multiplexes. The film isreleased in 2300 sccreens.

Dil Dhadakne Do has taken a decent opening. The occupancy at the multiplexes in the morning shows is around 30%while single screens is 15-20%.The opening was best in Mumbai, Delhi & UP. This is the best opening of the year at multiplexes behind only TWMR.While Dil Dhadakne Do box office opening at multiplexes is good but it is poor in single screens which was always expected.

Dil Dhadakne Do
has received positive reviews and word of mouth is also positive. So it
will show good growth as the day progressed. It is always the case that
multiplex oriented films start slowly in the morning and show growth as
the day progressed. The film has also solid advance booking.

We will continue to update this page throughout the day. So keep visiting!!!

I think it will go twmr way n wom will count.

Dil Dhadakne Do review: Cruising through relationships
Ananya Bhattacharya New Delhi, June 5, 2015 | UPDATED 10:55 IST

Cast: Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Rahul Bose, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akhtar, Vikrant Massey

Direction: Zoya Akhtar

Ratings: (2/5)

If her earlier films are anything to go by, Zoya Akhtar is quite adept at the art of creating slice-of-life cinema. Her other three films, Luck By Chance (2009), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) and the Sheila Ki Jawani segment in Bombay Talkies (2013), have all touched the hearts of her audience somewhere or the other. It could have been the same with her latest box office outing, too, but alas. If a single-line review of Dil Dhadakne Do, it is not quite the film you can connect with.

The story starts with Pluto Mehra (the Mehras' mastiff, who has Aamir Khan behind the microphone for him) introducing the characters of a Delhi high-society family, where Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor), the patriarch plays golf and loves talking about his self-made-ness. His wife, Neelam (Shefali Shah) is a typical Punjabi rich-man's-wife with little to do except meet friends for lunch and make snide comments about them, a favour returned in full by her friends. The Mehras' marriage has been on the rocks for a long time, but the broken shards are kept under the carpet.

Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) is the elder child of the family, a businesswoman who has made it to Forbes' Top 10, thanks to her hard work. She is married to Manav (Rahul Bose), who has 'allowed his wife to work despite the fact that no woman in his family has done so earlier'. Kabir (Ranveer Singh), the Mehras' younger child, is 25, uninterested in taking over his dad's empire and can fly planes. The Mehras decide to celebrate 30 years of their for-your-eyes-only marriage by inviting their friends to a 10-day-long cruise to Turkey and Greece. And yes, the Mehras' empire is crumbling. But, you know, the cruise is necessary, come what may.

In these ten days on board the liner, the dysfunctional-at-its-core Mehra family goes through a lot. Here's where Kabir meets and falls in love with Farah Ali (Anushka Sharma), a dancer, and makes viewers thank their stars that they get to see the utterly crackling chemistry between the two. At the cost of sounding non-classy (or whatever), the smooches between these off-screen exes make up for a lot that the film in itself is unable to. Priyanka is eloquent more with her expressions than her words. Her body language helps portray so much, and deserves much praise. Along with Farhan Akhtar, in a special appearance as the journalist Sunny, Priyanka sets fire to the frame when the two are together. Their exchanges are among the high points in the film. Rahul gets his quasi-closeted chauvinist Manav across with adequate skill.

Apart from Priyanka-Farhan and Ranveer-Anushka, it is Anil Kapoor who is quite at the 'top of the world' as Kamal Mehra, as far as acting is concerned. After an emotional outburst towards the end of the film, when Mehra Sr is required to speak to his daughter, he leaves a gamut of emotions unspoken - just conveyed with his silence and restraint. Shefali Shah plays her disillusioned-yet-hanging-on-to-the-marriage Neelam with a hitting honesty.

While Dil Dhadakne Do is rich in terms of its performances and cinematography, it is the pace of the story that makes you want to run out of the theatre on more occasions than one. Along with the cruiser on the ocean, the narrative too travels at such a leisurely speed that halfway through, you want to de-board this film-on-water. More often than not, you'd need shots of really strong espresso to keep you awake in this 170-minute-long-on-reel-never-ending-fare-in-real film.

Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar can't keep the viewer interested in the story, and the sloppy editing only adds to the yawns. Anand Subaya and Manan Mehta should have been a lot tighter with their pairs of scissors.

Carlos Catalan's camera captures Istanbul in all its glory. A cycle race between Farah and Kabir, as the two navigate the city, is among the delightful sequences in the film. Dil Dhadakne Do is a treat for the eyes. Much like Zoya's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, where Spain was presented to the Indian audience in its spicy-zesty-tasty flavour, here Turkey does its job of beckoning one to its shores.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is barely passable, and slows the film down even more. Gallan Goodiyaan is the catchiest of the soundtrack.

In all, Dil Dhadakne Do demands a lot of patience and stifling of yawns on the viewer's part. Zoya Akhtar tells her simple tale well, but weighs it down with too many relationships and too much of drama. So much so, that after a point, you're no longer interested in the goings-on in front of you. Watch it for the ensemble cast. And of course, Ranveer-Anushka.
