Bollywood is a domain where, almost every week, a new character 'takes birth'. There have been many instances wherein the film's characters have become evergreen icons and names to reckon with. The day and date of August 15, 1975 will always be memorable for the cinema lovers as that was the day when the iconic 'Gabbar' (of SHOLAY) took birth on silver screen. Even though this week's release GABBAR IS BACK happens to be the 'name-esis' of the famous character 'Gabbar', will it create the same impact as its original... lets analyse.

The film starts off with the very righteous man Professor Aditya (Akshay Kumar) and his tryst with corruption. He is on a mission to infuse a sense of purpose and hope amongst his students in 'National College', the place where he teaches the five elements of survival, in both, theory as well as practicals! Besides being a professor, he is also a vigilante who functions under the name of 'Gabbar'. He and his team inject fear amidst the corrupt officers. The main mission of his team is to eliminate the corrupt individuals, from all the spheres of life, but... in a systematic manner. When he's not bashing up the bad guys, Prof. Aditya also finds time to go on coffee dates with Devaki (Shruti Haasan). There is also a back story of Aditya that finds him romancing his wife (Kareena Kapoor Khan in a cameo) and how tragedy strikes him, courtesy industrialist Digvijay Patil (Suman Talwar). While the laidback police officials are unable to nab Gabbar, it takes an enterprising 'English speaking' constable Sadhu (Sunil Grover) to get the vital clues and leads about the whereabouts of Gabbar and his team. The only problem with Sadhu is that, because he is a 'driver', none of his superiors take him seriously and always belittle him. Amidst all this, when the police and the government land up in a very tight spot because of their inability to nab Gabbar, they hire a razor-sharp topcop, who vows to nab Gabbar at any cost. And when he sees Sadhu's clues of nabbing Gabbar, he immediately offers him all the support that he needs. Do the police and government ever get to know the real 'Gabbar', do they decipher the reason behind these killings, will Sadhu land up playing a spoilsport in Gabbar's master plans or does Gabbar who has been exposing the corrupt, will himself come out before everyone and 'expose' himself... is what forms the rest of the film.

GABBAR IS BACK is an official remake of the southern hit RAMANAA. It has the South Indian stamp of filmmaking written all over it. Ear-splitting-background-score, over-the-top action and humour emanating from strange food references like samosa-and-laal-chatni. One can also draw references with the recently released UNGLI which appointed a somewhat similar modus operandi for tackling corruption. GABBAR IS BACK's director Radhakrishna Jagarlamudi aka 'Krish' needs to be applauded for making a topical film at a time when the country is being swept by the corruption wave. Despite the fact that the film is a remake of the hit Tamil film RAMANAA, Krish makes all the possible efforts to give GABBAR IS BACK a feel that will surely touch everyone's heart alike. Despite this being his debut film, his story telling through his direction is praiseworthy! He does reasonable justice to the film's story (A. R. Murugadoss) and vice versa.

As far as the performances are concerned, no prizes for guessing that the captain of the ship is none other than Akshay Kumar, the man who mouths the eternal dialogue 'Naam villain ka, kaam hero ka'. He is having a role befitting larger than life persona suiting a typical Bollywood Hero. He is earnest and it is clear that he believes in the actions of the protagonist. It is a departure from the comedies that Kumar has been associated with but it is no patch on the intelligent roles he has portrayed in SPECIAL 26 and BABY. Shruti Haasan, on her part, has this silly obsession with 'Google' facts that stops being funny after a point of time and lands up being irritating. At the same time, one cannot deny the fact that even though she has a small role, she looks beautiful. Sunil Grover is impressive. After being caught up in the garb of 'Gutthi' since a long time, he successfully creates an impact as an actor in this film. One just hopes that this film opens the proverbial door for this talented guy. Suman Talwar in the villainous role is too loud. The rest of the characters help in moving the film forward.

On the music front (Chirantan Bhatt, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Manj Musik), the track of 'Teri Meri Kahani' is the only saving grace in the movie which, otherwise lacks any soulful music. The single screen audience in smaller centers may take a liking to the luscious Chitrangda Singh's item song 'Kundi Na Khadkao Raja' because of its sexy presentation. Nirav Shah's Cinematography is average. Editing (Rajesh G. Pandey) is besotted with eye-sore zoom-ins. The pace of the movie is leisurely and it's only towards the end that it picks up pace. Rajat Aroraa's dialogues are catchy in parts. While the film loses its pace in the first half, it regains it in the second half.

On the whole, GABBAR IS BACK is an average entertainer which will draw huge footfalls over the weekend due to catchy massy title, action drama and the fact that it is releasing on a holiday. Post the weekend, the film will have to rely on 'PWD' (Performance on Week Days) to see it sail through. If you are sick and tired of corruption in India, then, you shall find GABBAR IS BACK inspiring, else you may find it boring and preachy.

Director: Krish
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Shruti K. Haasan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Suman Talwar, Sunil Grover
Rating: 2 stars

Director Krish brings the iconic screen name Gabbar back in theatres along with the immortal dialogues for his hindi film debut. But this Gabbar played by Akshay Kumar has no similarities with Amjad Khan's character in Sholay. Perhaps there is one! Akshay's character shows the same desperation to wipe out corruption from the country that Gabbar had when going after Jai and Veeru.

The film begins with Gabbar scanning all corrupt tehsildars whom he proceeds to punish cruelly by hanging them in the middle of the city. Numerous such incidents lead to utter chaos leaving the police department shaken up in embarrassment.

Does the mastermind of Gabbar keep you on the edge of the seat? Yes, it definitely does till the first half. The hospital sequence, a well thought out idea, brings to light the corrupt medical practice in the country. But poor dialogues at key junctions; exuberance and over the top drama seen in films down South bring the movie crashing down. After a time you ask yourself, why are they making me dislike the film when I have been enjoying it all this while?'

Shruti Haasan is good in bits and with a limited scope to perform she leaves no impact on screen. Bad screenplay can make any actress appear average. Shruti unfortunately is a victim of this. On the other side of fence fighting Gabbar is Suman Talwar. He has a prominent screen presence, has a strong reason to go after Gabbar. What is that reason? We will leave that for you to find out in the theatres.

The one actor who you least expect to pull off the role of a cop is Sunil Grover. His TV character Gutthi is so popular but not even in a single frame it reminds you of that. He holds your attention and you really sympathize with the apathy he goes through in the department. The senior police officers cast in these roles do a convincing job.

Krish's attempt to remake Tamil film Ramana may not be liked by the Hindi speaking audience. His treatment of the film, though fast paced, lacks connect which he could have easily had with a massy star like Akshay Kumar.

Akshay Kumar has put sincere efforts in every department be it intense or romantic scenes. But all the elements of screenplay, editing, and storyline put together doesn't really help to drive the point back home. The climax of the film is a yawn and doesn't move you at all.

kshay Kumar's Gabbar Is Back movie review
What's the story-

Gabbar (Akshay Kumar) is an unknown one-man force who is determined to flush out the corruption from our society. He decides to take charge as a social law maker on the brink of anarchy when all the formal faculties fail. He doesn't believe in scolding the corrupt, rather he believes in punishing them with death.

For the first time, corruption gets the fierce taste of punishment when a dozen of crooked Tahsildars are kidnapped. Out of these, the most dishonest one is killed while the rest are released.

The message is loud and clear, if anybody is caught even bribing, Gabbar is out there to teach him a lesson. But a wicked local builder (Suman Talwar) won't let that 'Swacch Abhiyan' of Gabbar be a success. So what will Gabbar do now?

Why is it so that Gabbar is all out alone to fight the corruption? Does Gabbar have any other hidden agenda behind the selfless fight against the biggest evil prevalent in the society? Find it out yourself.

What works for the movie?

What sets 'Gabbar is Back' apart in the action genre is its unabashedly massy tone. Though the issues raised are cliche but they are so widespread in our society that the audience can easily relate to them. Director Krish, known in down south for his fashioning flamboyant fables, here exercises unexpected control when one least expects it. This is where this film about a self-appointed anti-corruption vigilante scores among the audience. It taps Akshay Kumar's unbound energy and harnesses it at key points of the narrative to underscore rather than over-punctuate the theme of corruption.

The dialogues (by Rajat Arora) may seem dramatic but these rightly raise our concern. Dialogues about a corrupt-free nation have the power to sway the masses with idealistic rhetoric. Swachh Bharat too gets its due that is compelling rather than corny in a sequence.

And to the character's good fortune, that are all well delivered by Khiladi Kumar. The way in which he delivers his lines on the rampancy of corruption, his conduct and his wry detached disdain for the corrupt, are all brought to the surface with a forceful equilibrium constantly at play. Akshay makes you sit up and listen(shut up/sit down??) without raising his voice against the questionable deeds. The lines flow with furious passion without getting flooded in bombast.

Akshay is a star-actor at the peak of his acting prowess. He exudes the kind of understated confidence while delivering his dialogues about the nation filled with corruption that requires a lot of self-control and inner confidence.

Background acoustics by Sandeep Chowta elaborate every sequence with high-octane melodrama.

What spoils the mood?

Had it not been Akshay Kumar the screenplay would have been more of a 'scream-play'. The characters, the twists and turns consistently cry for your attention. However, they have some sensitivity that redeems at times, without which Gabbar would have been just another loud and garish film about corruption in high-rise places where builders are the baddies.

Besides Akshay, it's Sunil Grover, known as the drag queen Gutthi on Kapil Sharma's comedy show, who plays a low-rank police constable with sobriety.

Jaideep Ahlawat, who is usually so riveting on screen, here seems uncomfortable in a CBI officer avatar. The villains are all clumsy cardboard cut-outs conveying the corrupt element with as much subtlety as an uncovered sewage.

The women are sketchily portrayed. Shruti Haasan as the leading lady plays a lawyer who is busy delivering homilies to Akshay and others rather than fighting court cases. Chitrangda pops up to do an awful item song that is poorly edited. Kareena Kapoor Khan in a cameo sings a romantic song with Akshay and perishes in a clumsily staged building collapse.

Final verdict-

Despite everything, the film survives to tell-a-tale that is relevant today. 'Gabbar Is Back' knocks the bottom off the action genre with a breathless ode to Swachh Bharat. The film may appear louder-than-life instead of larger-than-life but the tone is unapologetic massy. You can't change the disintegrating social order by being delicate towards it. Akshay Kumar amazingly, through his bearded, brooding leadership, explains that.

'Gabbar Is Back' - Akshay redefines superhero (IANS Movie Review, Rating - ****)
IANS | Apr 30, 2015 11:50 AM IST

Film: "Gabbar Is Back"; Cast: Akshay Kumar, Sunil Grover, Shruti Haasan, Suman Talwar and Jaideep Ahlawat; Director: Krish; Rating: ****

'Let's give the drivel' its due. Films about heroes who harangue and punish the corrupt go back to the time when Guru Dutt turned his back on a hopeless humanity in "Pyaasa". Since then, corruption has grown epidemic. And so have films on the theme.

What sets "Gabbar is Back" apart in the genre is its unabashedly massy tone. Here is a film about a man who decides to take charge of a social order on the brink of anarchy when all the formal faculties fail. He doesn't believe in reprimanding the corrupt. He believes in punishing them with death.

So, we have bribe-happy district collectors and other law enforcers hanging limp on trees and hoardings.

Ouch!

Yup, this Gabbar means business. And to the character's good fortune, he is played by the very watchable Akshay Kumar. For my money and time, Akshay is by far the most complete star-actor package among contemporary A-lister heroes in Bollywood. The way in which he delivers his lines on the rampancy of corruption, his demeanour and his wry detached disdain for the corrupt, are all brought to the surface with a forceful equilibrium constantly at play.

This is a star-actor at the pinnacle of his power. Akshay exudes the kind of understated confidence while delivering lines about a corrupt-free nation, that requires a lot of sang-froid, inner conviction and most important of all, an audience that would believe in the hero's convictions.

With due respect, none of the other A-lister superstars of Bollywood have the power to sway the masses with idealistic rhetoric. It's in his eyes. Akshay makes you sit up and listen without raising his voice. To his good fortune, in "Gabbar...", he gets lines about a Swachh Bharat that are compelling rather than corny. The lines flow with furious passion without getting swamped in a bombast. That's a near-miraculous achievement in a film which is designed as a high-octane melodrama with every sequence punctuated by elaborate background acoustics (Sandeep Chowta).

Rajat Arora's dialogues are Akshay Kumar's biggest support system here. Director Krish, known down south for fashioning flamboyant fables, here exercises unexpected restraint when one least expects it. This is where this film about a self-appointed anti-corruption vigilante scores. It taps Akshay Kumar's spiritual energy and harnesses it at key points of the narrative to underscore rather than over-punctuate the theme of corruption.

By the time Akshay's Man Of The Masses gets to the climax on top of a car to deliver a rousing speech on youth power, the narrative is perfectly attuned to its leading man's monkish equilibrium and how it can be projected outwards to convey the angst of a wounded ravaged civilisation. Even when the arch-villain, an unscrupulous builder played with operatic gusto by Suman Talwar is busy hamming it up to the hilt, Akshay maintains his attitude of detached contempt.

Baatein kam, 'calm' zyadaa!

Thank God for Akshay Kumar. The screenplay would otherwise have been more of scream-play. The characters and the twists and turns in the lot constantly scream for attention. The exception besides Akshay is Sunil Grover. Known as the drag queen Gutthi on Kapil Sharma's comedy show, Sunil playing a low-rank police constable in a police station filled with officers who are more bothered with the chutney for their plates of samosa than the collapse of the law and order and situation, epitomises India's smothered voice of the conscience.

It's such sudden spurts of sensitivity that redeem what would otherwise have been just another loud, boorish and garish film about corruption in high-rise places. Builders are the baddies here, you see.

Jaideep Ahlawat, usually so riveting on screen, here seems uncomfortable in his suited avatar as a CBI officer. His belated entry should have done to the narrative what Nawazuddin Siddiqui did to "Kahaani".

No such luck. The villains are all clumsy cardboard cut-outs conveying the corrupt element with as much subtlety as an uncovered sewage.

The women are sketchily portrayed. Shruti Haasan bustles in and out playing a lawyer who is busy delivering homilies and babies on the streets rather than fighting cases. Chitrangda pops up to do an awful item song, best left edited out. And Kareena Kapoor Khan, looking like a zillion bucks (so what's new), sings a romantic song with Akshay and perishes in a clumsily staged building collapse.

Luckily, the film survives to tell a tale that's as relevant today as it was when Kamal Haasan, all dressed up in wizened prosthetics blew the lid off governmental corruption in "Hindustani".

"Gabbar Is Back" knocks the bottom off the action genre with a breathless ode to Swachh Bharat. The film may appear louder-than-life to the dainty-hearted. But the tone is unapologetic massy. You can't change the disintegrating social order by being subtle.

Miraculously, Akshay Kumar does exactly that.

Don't ask how. Just go for his bearded, brooding leadership qualities. Swachh Bharat needs such a hero.

"Gabbar Is Back" has made quite a good impression on viewers before its release. The trailer of the film and songs received positive response on social media.

The trailer of the film has garnered more than 3 million views since its release and has been well received by moviegoers. "Gabbar Is Back" has created curiosity among viewers with its storyline, and the star casts.

Also, the film is a remake of 2002 Tamil film "Rammana", which was a blockbuster hit. With all points working in the favour of the film, there are huge expectations from Akshay's latest release to end the tough phase at the box office.

This year, box office witnessed only few hit films, including Akshay's "Baby" which is the highest grosser Bollywood film of 2015. The next hit film is Varun Dhawan's "Badlapur", followed by Ranbir Kapoor's "Roy".

With "Gabbar Is Back" release, trade analysts are expecting that the film will do wonders at the box office.

"Baby" is the highest grosser, but the film failed to earn 100 crore in its lifetime run. The box office run of "Baby" ended at 95 crore. "Roy", which was the next big release failed to cross the 50 crore mark, while "Badlapur" crossed 50 crore mark.

The box office performance of "Gabbar Is Back" depends highly on its review and word of mouth. Recently, several movies, including big budget films have flopped at the box office owing to not-so-great reviews.

But since the pre-release buzz is positive, the film might have a good start and end the dry spell.

"Gabbar Is Back" is helmed by Krish and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. The film also stars Shruti Haasan, Suman Talwar and Sunil Grover in pivotal roles.

The film will hit screens on Labour Day holiday, i.e. on 1 May.
