Detective Byomkesh Bakshi Movie Review, Rating

CM [Common Man]
April 02 2015 11:10 PM
- 3.5/5

What Is Good

  • Tight direction
  • Wonderful editing
  • Excellent writing
  • Realistic setting
  • Performances

What Is Bad

  • An extremely mystifying climax
  • Slow second half
  • Too much blood and gore
Bottom Line:An intriguing plot set in a not-so-conventional storyline, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy needs a lot of patient to grasp. Go ahead and watch it for its real hero; direction.

Story

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is a story of a young Bengali private detective named Byomkesh Bakshy (Sushant Singh Rajput). Byomkesh is approached by Ajit Bandyopadhyay to solve the case of his lost father named Bhuvan. In the process, Byomkesh meets Dr Anukul Guha, and goes ahead to stay in his lodge, where Ajit's father stayed, which leads to other dissolved mysteries revolving Chinese mafia and freedom fighters. One death leads to another and Byomkesh gets trapped in solving the case

What has happened to Ajit's father and will Byomkesh be able to solve this mysterious murder case amongst all the confusion? Forms the rest of the film...

Star Performance

From TV to movies, Sushant Singh Rajput had a long and successful journey. The actor proved his worth in his debut film and with Detective Byomkesh Baskhy we can say that the actor keeps getting better with every film. His confidence takes the role to a new high. Other equally talented actors, Anand Tiwari and Swastika Mukherjee support Sushant brilliantly. However, a special mention goes to Neeraj, who easily walks away with all accolades in climax.

Techinical Team

Dibakar very well knows how to keep his viewers engrossed at all times. With the end of the first half, all I could hear people talk about was the yet-to-be-resolved suspense of the movie. It is good to see people getting involved in cinema to this extent. Technically too, the movie is absolutely sound. From the extremely excellent camerawork and locations, to the continuous twists, everything is perfect. Thebackground score is brilliant and keeps the puzzling disposition of the film right on course. With no music in the movie, it becomes even easier for the viewers to concentrate. The very tight story and dialogues written by Urvi and Dibakar are incredible. The art department plays a huge part in making the movie and the scenes more authentic. Editing is top notch.

But here is something about detective movies. One just cannot afford to overlook a single shot or scene, as you may end up trailing the whole plot. And here is something about Dibakar Banerjee movies, they are equally mystifying and require a lot of brains to be understood. And when these two things collaborate, the end result comes out to be something called Detective Byomkesh Bakshy. The movie is visually arresting and oozes of cinematic panache. However, it is just not a cup of tea of every person. The fact that the film is definitely not a watch for the masses can prove to be a loss for the film. Not every single person will be able to understand the twists and turns that the movie contains and especially the climax, which is even more perplexing.

While the tale appears to be just a sequence of murder mysteries, you have got to wait for the plot to unfold eventually. The second half of the movie is however comparatively slow paced.

Analysis

On a whole, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is a murder mystery like no other bollywood detective film and can be easily compared to the international standard of film making, due to its amazing direction and performances. The film has been shot spectacularly, but the fact that it involves a lot of blood, gore, too many twists, and the slow second half, may repel most of the masala loving crowd. It will take a great deal of patience for a person to understand the venture with perfectio

Bollywood review: Sushant Singh Rajput lends grit and charm to Detective Byomkesh Bakshy'
Director Dibankar Banerjee's take on the now-celebrated Bengali detective's origins has its moments of thrill and shock, but his grand crescendo doesn't live up to our expectation
By Sneha May Francis
Published Thursday, April 02, 2015

We've all cheered the celebrated, dhoti-clad Bengali detective as he meticulously and delightfully solved innumerable mysteries, but unraveling his early days on the snooping trail is director Dibankar Banerjee. His 160-minute-long Detective Byomkesh Bakshy' explores the beginnings of the young Bengali sleuth, as the world around him erupts in a bloody battle of the early 1940s.

Dibankar joins writer Urmi Juvekar to create a world that stays partially true to Byomkesh Bakshy's creations, and textures it like Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.

His unibrowed detective establishes his early days, when he proudly announces his name many times over, to which a young lady replies, "But, who are you?"

The recognition comes soon enough, and you watch him promptly flash the newspaper that carries his name. "I'm the detective mentioned here," he proclaims to a top investigating officer, although the response is unexciting, and access to the information denied.

There are moments, initially, when Dibankar hints he could've ended up as a professor if he was lucky in love.

Framed magnificently by Nikos Andritsakis, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy' is set in Calcutta, as Byomkesh helps a young man find his missing father. Determined to crack it, Byomkesh works diligently, but fumbles and falters miserably.

His investigation triggers more killings, and throws up innumerable theories on what could've possibly caused them.

Dibankar keeps us guessing by adding in many twists and turns. Some that work, and some that don't. But, we faithfully remain by Byomkesh's side till the end, where Dibankar builds to a grand crescendo. Despite the buildup, it appears a tad disappointing, but the striking action he injects towards the end, promises to be an exciting prelude to more adventures with Byomkesh and his loyal sidekick Ajit.

The narrative is deliberately unhurried, and Dibankar constantly throws us innumerable clues. We hold on to each, and patiently wait for the big reveal.

Sushant Singh Rajput owns Byomkesh, and lends him immense charm. It takes him a while to win us over, but when he does, there's no going back.

Anand Tiwari is notable as his assistant, and leads the incredible supporting cast. Swastika Mukherjee sizzles as the enigmatic Anguri Devi, while Divya Menon holds her own as the rustic Satyawati. Neeraj Kabi is a great find as the sharp Dr Ankul Guha.

Dibankar's whodunit is wickedly thrilling, and a good start to better things to come.

How difficult it is to spell the director's name correctly ??
