Detective Byomkesh Bakshy1

Dibakar Banerjee's most awaited thriller has finally hit the big screens. The movie stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Anand Tiwari and Swastika Mukherjee in prominent roles. Our reviewer Prathamesh Jadhav is watching the film in a special press show. During the interval, Prathamesh sneaked out of the dark room to give us a quick update about what he feels about this most debated venture.

Prathamesh says, "Sushant Singh Rajput sparkles within his understated performance in Dibaker Banerjee's Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! But the real hero is the intelligent filmaker himself who dishes out a rather elaborate plot. The tale may appear just a series of murder mysteries. But wait for the complex plot to unfold. It will take a great deal of patience and a hatke cinematic palate to taste this one. Banerjee pays attention to minutes details in terms of construction the characters and the city."

"Banerjee pays attention to minutes details in terms of construction the characters and the city (Calcutta). He lets the story take a usual path. Only before delivering a rather edgy punch. So good so far but certainly not crafted for the masses. ", adds our reviewer. Stay tuned to this space for the full movie review of Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!.

DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY
Thursday 2 April 09:450 COMMENTS
Release Date :4/3/2015 12:00:00 AM
Director :Dibakar Banerjee
Genre :Thriller
Detective Byomkesh Bakshy

Details :
Thursday, 2nd April 10:15 PM IST

DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY Is Edge Of The Seat Interesting Thriller
Pluses:
Realistic setting, very well shot, Sushant Singh Rajput delivers honest act, Neeraj is outstanding and outshine all, perfect supporting cast, tight direction by Dibakar, super editing, taut writing

Minuses:
Climax is unnecessarily full of blood bath,2nd half slows down, background score is uneven

Critic Rating:
4.5/5

Business Rating:
3.5/5

Verdict:
Watch it for rare and fantastic suspense flick experience

Detailed Analysis:
Dibakar Banerjee gave few gems in 'Khosla Ka Ghosla', 'Oye Lucky Lucky Oye' and 'Love Sex Aur Dhokha'. Now he is back with big screen adaptation of cult character, Byomkesh Bakshy.

Film is based in complex world of Kolkata of 1942. 2nd world war, Japanese attack on Kolkata and freedom struggle - in middle of this chaos, there us small time Detective Byomkesh Bakshy who is investigating death of a chemist Bhuvan. His son (Anand Tiwari) along with Byomkesh gets into the dark secretive Kolkata. One secret is unraveled after another and one death leads to another murder; how Byomkesh gets trapped in solving the case forms the rest of the film.

Performance wise Sushant Singh Rajput completely surrenders to the role and though his voice does not go with character, he delivers an honest act. Anand Tiwari is good and so is Swastika Mukherjee. Film has stellar performances from supporting cast but the real scene stealer is Neeraj. He simply walks away with all accolades in climax.

Film has a very taut story and dialogues written by Urvi and Dibakar where every character and scene comes out fantastically. Background music looks out of the place at times. Art department brings authentic look of those times and editing is top notch. There is no music in the film which is a welcome break.

Director Dibakar Banerjee again delivers an edge of the seat and intetesting thriller. He creates environment and once again proves his mastery over the medium.

Film will release tomorrow and will release across 1240 screens. Film has good chances at box office as there is no competition plus holiday tomorrow. Film will depend on exceptional word of mouth to achieve great heights as it's primarily a multiplex film.

Go for this one for some great performances and tight thriller, a rare combo for Bollywood!

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! movie review: Blood, betrayal and lust - Sushant Singh Rajput's murder mystery will BLOW your mind!

Make way for the sexiest detective in town as Sushant hits the nail right on the head with this one

Nothing fascinates me more, like murder mysteries do. With each passing minute, I'm thankful to Dibakar Banerjee for having taken up a project as such. The truth of the matter is, that only a visionary like him could have done justice to the venture, much like he did. My nails are half bitten and I find myself going back to scenes which made me go "oh duuudddeee" Here's what I thought of Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! :

What's it about:

Set in the pre-independence era(1942) in Calcutta, the film is essentially a murder mystery. Meet Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, a goofy yet genius soul who doesn't miss the most minute details which often skip the other's eye. From the paan stains on one's lip to a scar under the elbow, this man sees it all. Detective sahab is approached by Ajit Bandyopadhyay( Anand Tiwari), who informs him about his missing father Bhuvan. Is he murdered or kidnapped? Here, the curtains are raised and a thrilling show begins. Byomkesh is supported by his companion Dr Anukul Guha ( Neeraj Kabi) in his chase to nail down the culprit. The plot thickens as Byomkesh discovers a possible suspect, Gajanan Sikdar(Dr Kaushik Josh) along with Anguri Devi( Swastika Mukherjee), a woman who hides her dark secrets by using the tool of seduction. A shocking twist comes in which makes Byomesh realise that he has been following the wrong trail all this while! What is the new story? Who the f**k killed Bhuvan? This is for me to hide and for you to find out!

What's hot

If there is any actor who could play Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, it's Sushant Singh Rajput. Not only did the actor own his character, he lived and became it. SSR kept me hooked throughout his journey and very few performers have the ability to hold one's attention in a way which he did. Director Dibakar truly used the actor's ability to the fullest and hence deserves credit for the same. Coming to the film, I loved the way the venture was handled from start to end. Be it the sudden twists, the camera angles or the brilliant way in which subtle touches of the 1940s era were brought in to make it all look believable, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is dark cinema at it's best. Allow me to give a shoutout to Dibakar for not being on the fence while showcasing gore, bloodshed or violence. All three are always brutal and the director knew that well. The gripping point of this venture is the background score. Every nail biting scene came across as deadly, owing to the brilliant music put in. Swastika Mukherjee was glamorous and sexy as Anguri Devi, much like she was ought to be. Anand Tiwari was believable and bang on as the clueless, tensed son who lost his father. The one who takes the cake in the end however, is the villain. He-who-must-not-be-named is the modern day Gabbar folks, so let me keep the suspense intact for you!

What's not:

Though I don't have much to say in this department, I would still like to mention the prolonged ending to this film. The scene where the entire mystery unravels, is fascinating to watch. However, what follows after, is an endless saga of "kill me or I'll kill you," which then turns into a bit of a snooze fest. All I remember saying by the end of it was " just get done with it already! " The ending scenes are slightly jumbled and come across as a glitch. I wish Dibakar could have ended the film earlier and made it shorter, as it would have created that lasting impact he was aiming for.

What to do:

Bollywood has aimed to shell out several murder mysteries in the past and failed miserably. Detective Byomkesh Bakshy however is a treat to watch, especially for all Sherlock Holmes fans. Trust me, you will forget about the ruling Khans once you see Sushant in his killer detective avatar! I urge you to go and watch this film right away.
