No paid media no outdoor hoardings no staff expenses for stars

Tushar Joshi

The overall dull scenario at the box-office has finally taken its toll on Bollywood. Last week, the top brass of B-town got together in its first-ever united stance and took a serious call on the manner in which they want to promote films in 2015. Serious decisions were taken in this regard.

The meeting, which lasted three hours, was held at Karan Johar's office in Bandra and leading producers like Mukesh Bhatt, Sajid Nadiadwala, Ekta Kapoor, Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap (Phantom Films), Ashish Patil (Yashraj Films), Siddharth Roy Kapur (UTV Disney), Vijay Singh (Fox Star), Ajit Andhare (Viacom 18), Sunil Lulla (Eros) and a few others were present. Bhushan Kumar of T-Series has also expressed his solidarity, even though he was not present.

The agenda of the meeting was being united over the money being spent on a film's marketing and promotion. A producer reveals, "When a film is up for release, we end up spending more than what is required. Every few months, some new avenue opens up that only adds up to the expense. But does indulging in so many different activities to promote your film really translate into business? No, it doesn't."

The Print and Advertising budget for a big film is between '6-10 crore, which is a big spend, and in the absence of return in terms of audiences/collections, the Producers' Guild decided to take some tough decisions (see box). Incidentally, the three recent films that have fared better than the others at the box-office (Badlapur, Dum Laga Ke Haisha and NH 10) had very limited budgets on publicity and marketing. "But that didn't stop the audience from coming in," says a producer.

The idea behind the meeting was to draw some rules regarding expenses, which every producer then would have to abide by. "In the South, they have a set limit on the kind of money you can spend on publicity and marketing. And every producer follows that. Be it a film starring Rajinikanth or a new actor, you cannot exceed that limit. This ruling has helped the entire industry," reveals our source.

Besides this, the stars weren't spared either. For a long time, producers have been bearing the burden of costs that have no relevance to the film " for example, the cost of a star's personal physical trainer and a star's manager. Wherever the star is shooting in the world, his/her trainer and manager being there is almost a requisite. This is an added cost to every producer. At the meeting, it was unanimously decided that stars would now have to pay for these costs themselves.

In the next meeting, scheduled to take place in two months, a limit would be set on advertising on television as well. Also, a limit on

the rates of other staff of film stars (make-up man, hair dresser and spot boys) would be put

in place.

I can't post the box but it basically says that:
1. Promotions can't exceed 6 weeks
2. No paid media
3. No promotional jackets in newspapers
4. No outdoor hoardings
5. No ads on bus backs
6. Stars have to pay for their managers/trainers

This would just create an elites' club. Where the powerful production houses, actors and massage giving actresses would show off their money, but the others won't be able to do that.

Pity the 4 cr. charging top heroines. Manager's, trainer's, make-up man's, hair dresser's and spot boy's bill.. how much would be left there after paying them? Those ladies should opt for sex-change operation. At least they'd get paid as much as a Ranveer Singh or a Varun Dhawan.

I think they just have to pay for their managers and trainers right now because it says producers will set a limit on the bills of other entourage members.

I think, stars should only pay the managers' and drivers' bills. Paying star driver's bill is unfair to the producers/ad-film-makers.

So now the actors will include the misc expenses as part of their fee..

Are hoardings, print ads and bus ads more expensive than TV ads? I thought the former would be targeted by average budget movies ( I frankly have no idea how it works in N India)

No outdoor hoardings? If you can't have it on Bus Backs, can they have it on the sides?
How can they promote then without posters?

Seems reasonable except for the no outdoor hoardings rule, which is a good way to reach people on the go and is probably mostly harmless. I'm surprised that funds for make-up men, hair dressers and spot boys aren't already well negotiated and budgeted before filming? It sounds more like all these people are trying to make a pinky promise that they won't indulge their fave pet stars no matter how many tantrums they throw, but tbh, they shouldn't have given in to them anyways so they've spoiled their employees into being rotten all by themselves.

Badlapur and NH10 considered as 'limited publicity and marketing' seems misleading because there was more than enough of these movies in the news, interviews, print media, etc. DLKH still felt more low-key, but anything like what was done for Badlapur & NH10 is plenty.

Now for the next meetings, they should add 'blocking big dates' to their agenda.
