It's easier to hint it, but not say it outright especially in desi society.
I actually think Karan did it the smartest way anyone could in his position.
Imagine, before all the rumors and all the ideas about his sexuality, before anyone could have guessed, if he came out way back when saying I"m gay...who knows how he would have been treated. How would the audience have reacted.
What he did instead, was let the rumors continue, to keep giving very subtle hints, yet maintain that he won't speak about it. In a way, the audience became conditioned over time. They kidna just accepted him and his behavior. They saw him being himself, and it was far more natural, than if they read some sensational news in the papers.
Even today, I think its his prerogative if he wants to speak about it or not.
Same way as some celebs choose to acknowledge relationships, this is far more personal. This is a person's sexual orientation.
It's something that people even in the West hesitate to reveal. And that's the West. Thats a country where there is a growing liberal population and community that supports you, and even the majority of Americans will applaud you for your courage and accept you.
I dont think we can say the same about Desi society.
