He says he won awards when he was starting out and they were important to him, so it would be unfair of him to refuse to show up to awards functions now and undermine people who are actually winning them. Which is fair. He has said he doesn't think he deserves to be nominated for HNY, why make a charade of the function and other winners by refusing to accept the award and giving it to someone else etc. It is not in his place, technically, to choose who to award, it's up to the organizers/jury.
Honestly, I have never defended SRK earlier and I think the criticism he gets for his choice of films lately as well as his recent performances is very valid, but people seem to retroactively apply that to everything he has done and say "Oh he has only won awards because he has been buying them from the beginning and depriving Aamir of his rightful share", which is not fair. And people need to stop acting like Aamir was taking the high road by refusing to attend award functions. He didn't stop accepting awards because he was outraged on the behalf of the film community, he did it because HE HIMSELF did not win the best actor award for Rangeela over SRK for DDLJ. And honestly, I think the only person who did not expect SRK to win for DDLJ was Aamir. DDLJ was a cult film and Raj was iconic, he is still a reference point for actors acting in romantic films. It is not like he won for HNY over PK. People forget that. It was actually very childish and bratty of Aamir to basically sulk and announce that he was not going to attend award functions because he didn't win. He could have just stopped attending instead of making an issue out of it.
Long post, but basically, people get disappointed at the awards every year but that doesn't mean you try to ruin it for everyone, including the newer actors who not only deserve awards but actually need the recognition/exposure. Lot of people felt Shahid deserved the award for Kaminey over Ranbir for WUS, but even if he was disappointed, he was gracious enough to not try and undermine the credibility of all the awards ever given. An Aamir Khan can afford to refuse awards now because it makes no difference to his stature but it means something to Shahid, Ranbir, Alia, Rajkumar etc. By constantly talking down the awards and refusing to attend you are basically depriving the newer actors of their moment of glory and undermining their achievements. It is selfish and childish. And what's worse is when people say that even if Aamir doesn't believe in awards, the organizers should run after him saying "Oh please, please forgive us! We are so sorry for all the hardships you have had to endure. PLEASE take this award over people who actually deserve it and appreciate it!" Rubbish.
