Actually, he is not completely off the mark. You need to date. You need to be with a few people. It takes time to figure out what you want in life and of a life partner. You are not going to get it in the first shot. If you marry and settle to early, eventually you will have regrets. You will get jealous of your single friends living it up. You may wish you had sex with more people. You find yourself more tempted by distractions. On the other hand, if you have taken time to meet, be with people and figure yourself out - you will be a lot more comfortable and at ease with your choice to settle down.

It is the difference between settling because you have to, and sharing a life with someone because you want to. This is true for both men and women.

In fact, 'tis the other way round---the more people you date, the more critical and demanding you become in a relationship. There's a reason half the marriages in countries like the US end up in divorce.

Nobody these days settles for "the first thing they get" even in the case of arranged marriages. Its wiser to take time and think things through, but if you've gone through a series of failed relationships, then it does not reflect very well upon your power to adjust or compromise. And you can know what you want from a relationship even if you haven't dated at all.

Besides, a relationship is not an experiment that one can just "conduct" passively. Break-ups cause pain and in some cases, paranoia for certain stuff. There are cases where people have got married to their first love and have led happy lives.
