Kareena Kapoor's role in Udta Punjab revealed

Kareena is known to be extremely stylish but in her forthcoming film, the star will don the simple look of a doctor.

The actress will play the role of a doctor yet again.

Mumbai: She is known to be extremely stylish but in her forthcoming film 'Udta Punjab, Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor Khan will don the simple look of a doctor.

The 35-year-old actress said her role in the neo-noir drama-thriller is on the lines of a Samaritan, but the setting of the movie is dark.

"I play a doctor in the film. It's (the role) very simple and nice, good Samaritan kind of a thing. But the whole atmosphere of the film is so nice and dark that the role is very different," Kareena told PTI.

Interestingly, the "3 Idiots" actress played a doctor before also in films like Salman Khan starrer "Kyon Ki" (2005), "Kambakkht Ishq" and "Agent Vinod", opposite Saif Ali Khan in 2012.

"Udta Punjab", directed by Abhishek Chaubey, is being made after four years of research and is based around the drug-related problems prevalent in Punjab.

Kareena said the movie is starkly different from her upcoming film "Ki & Ka".

"Udta Punjab' will be totally different from Ki & Ka' because this is lot more fun, quirky and entertaining. Udta Punjab' will be dark, gritty, edgy kind of a film," she said.

The film, scheduled to release in June, also stars Alia Bhatt, Shahid Kapoor and Prabhjyot Singh.

Punjabi actor Diljit Dosanjh will be seen opposite the "Bajrangi Bhaijaan" actress.

Kareena made her film debut in 2000 with JP Dutta's "Refugee" and went on to work in films ranging from multi-starrer "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham", to crime-drama "Omkara" and "Jab We Met", a romantic-comedy.

The actress, who earlier used to feature in four-five movies every year, has slowed down her work and is seen doing one-two films per year, which she terms intentional.

"It is a conscious decision, yes. I want to do something which is great, something that I love, which will get me excited to go to the studio and do it. So, it is going to take a lot out of me to say yes," she said.

Her next film "Ki & Ka" opposite Arjun Kapoor is slated to release on April 1.

Alia Bhatt to play an aspiring hockey player from Bihar in Udta Punjab?

Though it has been revealed that Abhishek Chaubey's upcoming directorial Udta Punjab will be based on the drug abuse issue, the details of the film are being kept under wraps. Amidst several rumours, we hear that Alia Bhatt will be seen playing the role of an aspiring hockey player from Bihar.

It is being said that Alia Bhatt will be seen in a complete different avatar, so much so that, the makers have gone to the extent of changing her skin colour to a few shades darker along with an orange tinge given to her hair. The actress will apparently be speaking Bhojpuri since her character hails from Bihar and it has been learnt that the actress has even learnt the language for the same. Though the costume designer of the film Payal Saluja did mention that the makers have experimented with Alia's skin texture, she hasn't divulged any further details on the same. It seems that the makers are taking special care to keep the look of Alia Bhatt in Udta Punjab a secret.

Alia Bhatt's character will be portrayed as a migrant in Punjab who though earns minimal income, aspires to make it big in the world of hockey. Further, we also hear that the actress' character falls prey to drug addiction due to poverty and desperation. Alia Bhatt shot for the film in varied places of Punjab like Tarn Taran and Amritsar.

Besides her, Udta Punjab also stars Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh. The film is slated to release June 17.

While Alia Bhatt's character in Abhishek Chaubey's drug-drama, Udta Punjab, has been strictly kept under wraps, Mirror has learnt that the actress plays a Bihari migrant in Punjab, who works as a labourer and harbours dreams of becoming a hockey player.

"Her skin will be a couple of shades darker, with freckles. Her hair has been bleached to give it an orange tinge. In the course of the story, her character is forced into drugs due to desperation and poverty. Alia will be seen speaking Bhojpuri which she has learnt," a source from the sets informed, adding that a majority of Alia's scenes were shot in Tarn Taran and Amritsar in Punjab.

The actress was often mistaken as her own body double by the locals. And while pictures of her co-stars, Shahid Kapoor and Punjabi actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh, have been unveiled, the makers are going out of the way to keep Alia's look under wraps. "Strict instructions forbade everyone from clicking her during the shoot. Her look is being planned as a surprise for the audience," the source added.

When Mirror contacted National Award-winning costume designer, Payal Saluja, who's working on Udta Punjab, she confirmed that the team has experimented with Alia's skin texture but refused to share further details.

& they could not give a dusky actor the role, they have to make Alia Bhatt look dark for this? In 2016?

This is so offensive in so many ways, seriously!! Dark skinned desis have enough difficulties finding representation as is, now this? A lot of dumb people working on this movie smh.
