Saw this on twitter.

Old review of Sholay.

Rating given is "Average"

Amitabh Bachchan is referred to Dharam's co actor/Dharam's friend/ co killier :) He gets no other mention in the review.

Very lengthy review - talks about editor, cameraman etc

It was a "holiday release" btw

My parents said in the 1970 era the media banned Amitabh there was a protest against him by media association he had a fight with a media person. They would replace his name with comma or co-star of who ever he acted with but they would not write his name.

The film is atrocious and it had mostly negative reviews upon release. And deservedly so.

I had only heard about the media boycott of Bachchan back then but never read an article where they don't mention his name and instead use terms such as "co-star" "the co-actor" LMFAO

I believe that after it's release Sholay was actually declared a flop movie. But over a few weeks period it started picking up and eventually becoming a blockbuster. Today of course it is considered one of the most iconic films in the history of Bollywood.

I think the ban or boycott of media/Amitabh Bachchan was a mutual thing or it might even have been started by Amitabh Bachchan himself. It is said that a publication had written a not so friendly article about his family (his mother specifically) and he boycotted them. But since 70s were his biggest era and what made him what he is today the media's boycott of him didn't work AT ALL . I think that is how he ended up with the nickname One Man Industry.

That's what I know anyway, if I got any of it wrong feel free to correct me.

Very few ppl know that sholay was declared flop during its first week run ,movie got overbudget n producers were gaining nothing but then miracle happened n now its termed as classic. Tame tame ki baat hai.
